Can I ask a simple question, when you add he camera derails at the bottom of the images, I don't seem to have time to read and absorb everything before they fade off, maybe I'm a bit slow here, but an extra second or so of details would help a lot for me to take in the information. Very good video, thanks. I think a great idea for a video, and what for me is the most important current one not made by any youtubers so far, is a direct performance comparison in real world shooting, from a bird in flight perspective, between the Canon R5 and Sony A1. Hi Jan! Warm and colorful with these amazing multi-colored birds, but I can understanding it doesn't come all by itself. Your preparation is a job by itself. I have just bought your masterclass, and I am looking forward to some comfy hours in the summertime. By the way, your birds much often have these soft blurred LIGHT backgrounds, and I know you pr3fer that. I have adopted this principale, but how do you avoid burned out backgrounds, if you have to expose for the (darker) bird? Excellent movie 👍🤤 Kind Regards, Jan
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks. Yes that’s the tricky part and that’s one of the main reasons I have used a lot of flash in the past. I haven’t used it much since the R5, but it can really help to balance the light. If you cannot use flash like in these hides, you will have to expose so that the background is just not blown out and then edit background and bird separately

Another stunning video Jan. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the r5 eye detect and to what extent you found it useful for keeping focus on fast flying small birds as they take off (i.e. the eye detect is locked on they eye and you are shooting 20fps as the bird takes off). My experience with new holland honeyeaters hasn't been great (unless they take off with the eye remaining in the original plane of focus). Not sure if it is me or just that the action is too fast for the autofocus to keep up. Your shot of the wattle bird attacking the mulga parrot is fantastic, btw.
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
At some point a small bird taking off if too fast. If the bird stays in a similar plane helps a lot of course. In years prior I always had to prefocus. This time I could rely on the eye AF more

As always - bravo and thank you. What are your thoughts on the EF 600mm f/4L IS II and the R5? If money was no object (I wish) would you upgrade to the EF III or wait for the RF? Beyond the weight differential, and subject to winning the lottery, what would your considerations/ thought process be?
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was dead set on getting the RF version. Now that it is just an updated version III, I will get one to test first and then make up my mind. I will certainly make a video about that when I get it. The version II and R5 perform very well, but the weight savings and potentially much faster AF and better extenders, certainly are tempting.

Great video and shots as per usual. I was wondering if you can talk about the settings and process you take for your videos of the birds? Are you choosing manual focus for this situation and if so how do you set the aperture to capture enough in focus without too much background but not so wide that you are actively shifting focus for each bird? Do you shoot 24.97/25 or whatever the region equivalent is or 30 or 60fps? I can see the difference in images from your 5d to the r5 but its not overly impressive as you've always taken great images, but the video quality you've been putting out with your new gear is a whole other level. I dont know if I am in the minority about asking about your video versus stills but if you are willing, I would really appreciate it.
@jan_wegener3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the R5 video quality has dramatically improved. I shoot 25 fps. In this video I went against the rules and left the lens wide open and used the shutter speed to set exposure. Which worked quite well and sometimes looks better for birds. I am using the continuous eye af for video. Which works fine most of the time, but sometimes focuses on something I don’t want to focus on. In this video I had one R5 filming on the 100-500 + 1.4x TC and used the other one on my 600. And also filmed a little bit on the 600 ( the clips with the smoothest BGs) that allowed me to shoot and film simultaneously. If I film myself I use 25fps, 1/50 and set iso and aperture accordingly and use ND filters if I have to
