Mya is an 8 month old blue and gold macaw, while Benny is an 8 month old blue fronted amazon. Their owners are finding trouble getting their birds off their shoulders once they are there, and socializing their birds with more people.
In this video we finally reveal WHY birds, especially macaws, have a tendency to RUSH THE SHOULDER! Before you've had a chance to keep it off there, and what to do to fix it!

I wish I had known a lot of this a long time ago when my family first got our bird. Now I'm married and live in another state and everytime I see these I want to work with him and repair our relationship! With terrible communication between us, our relationship went downhill. To the point I don't like being in the room when he's out cause I know he's going to target me (hes an umbrella 🤣). Next time I visit my parents I want to try and work with him with target training through the cage first... you've given me hope!

The first step towards success is realizing your past mistakes. After 20 years of doing whatever works with our lesser sulfer crested cockatoo Zeus I feel like I know how to start correcting my behaviour so he has more trust in me. I never treated the "step-up" as a trick and I have no idea why I didn't. Great video. 💛

Great, I've got a little slack with the "step up" also. I've let my Alex"s run up to the shoulder, then mess with my hair, pull out ear-rings, take over the living room. I only take control again when I want them back in their cage. I"ve hand raised these birds, they all talk. lots of love, but like teenagers they are starting to push the boundaries !!??

I feel lucky that my white fronted amazon is happy enough to step up! He actually refuses to go on my shoulder actually because I have such a small frame that he can hold onto anything, and he hates it when my hair hits him in the face. Thanks for the reminder to not do this though, I used to try it because he would get upset when I walk away for a second but my hands were full (which is equally stupid to try). But with the reminders from others to not do combined with the fact that he hates to do so, I stopped trying. On the other hand, he’s only about 7 months old now and I’ve only had him for about 2 of those months now so that could end up changing over time, we’ll just have to see! But that doesn’t mean I won’t stop him from trying to get on my shoulder later.

Love the video, thank you for posting. I didn’t like the new bird tricks flashing start to the video though... it just doesn’t work for me. I knew my shoulder was a safe place for my ring neck- he’s been doing it for 20 years. He will stay on my hand when not making the ramp, but you can see he wants my shoulder. He will stay on my shoulder while I’m out and about so I’m not sure I want to discourage it too much. He doesn’t like being stroked so it helps with other adults and children when he sits on their shoulder so they tend to leave him alone. I have the run down the back when I try to get him off just because I want it... he will run down my arm to get on his cage or the back of the couch we sit on. I’m not sure I want to retrain this behaviour as I can do almost anything and he will stay on my shoulder, it would be nice if he stepped up onto my hand from my shoulder every time though. Otherwise he is a really well behaved bird with a great temperament.

Parrots are the most rehomed pets in U.S... people just buy them because of their beauty, they don't know what it's like to live 30 40 years with the same pet. So I don't wanna be rude but first people should study everything about parrots training and behavior and needs and hormonal season and cage and food and then buy them! An ignorant owner makes a sad parrot.
@teri6193
@teri6193 4 жыл бұрын
You are so right. Millions of parrots suffer for years, are lonely, have no enrichment, fed poor diets, and die prematurely. Most people don't know how to care for parrots and then they rehome or literally ignore the birds when the birds mature and become aggressive because of inappropriate handling. It's tragic. At least some people like this family try to learn and get educated by good teachers.

I felt that way with my little conure, before he started grabbing at my neck skin, refusing to get down, and making sure to fly to my shoulder any time I want to go anywhere without him! going to the toilet, cooking and cleaning are challenging scenarios I now have to distract him with food or toys, or put him in his cage... Which doesn't work if he realises what I'm doing! Honestly the only way to get him off my shoulder sometimes is to take off my T-shirt, not as easy as it sounds when your being careful not to hurt a small bird!

I have the exact same issue with my guy refusing to get off my shoulder so I have to distract him and basically trick him into coming off.. however, strangely enough if we go for a walk outside and he’s on my shoulder he is perfectly calm and docile and will get off my shoulder nicely once we come back inside. Is it okay to give a “bite” of a treat then remove it and give another bite for the next interaction or is that frustrating to the bird? Our quaker loves nutriberries so I let him nibble off a piece then we reset for another round after he’s done eating his bite.

Quick question. I have as African Grey. She’s not so much a rescue as she needs love and attention so badly. I do shoulder her due to the fact I need her to trust me. All 3 owners do not do something Dave does automatically: Dave drops his elbow when he holds a bird on his hand- there is no "bridge" to his shoulder (his hand/perch is higher than the elbow), for all the others from the hand to the elbow to the shoulder is up-up-up route (the easy way out AND the easy way to a solid perch-place). I find it adorable how the pudgy guy is soooo carefull, but he actually gives the bird no real feeling of stepping on something solid (reliable). Probably because he does not want to hurt her, but he is not offering a solid perch that way (he drops his hand when the bird reaches out, too much 'give' : not enough resistance to the birds weight; signaling an unsafe perch that will not bear the parrots weight at all -> if my chairs did this I would not sit down either!).

I have a female turquoise clear tail Indian ringneck that hates fingers. She will step up to a whole hand but if you have just one finger her eyes pin, she vocalizes, and then gives a warning bite. How would you get a bird that hates or is scared 9f fingers to be ok with fingers? I've only had her for about 2 months and she has made major milestone, is this gonna be a time and patience thing cause I have all the patience in the world for her.
@iriolexisbierle6697

Systematically "remove" fingers. Start with the whole hand, which is within her comfort zone. When you get a "clean loop" (meaning, she is stepping up, getting rewarded, going down, then immediately offering a step up with no other behavior in between) then put down one finger and keep going. The point here is to use the momentum you've built up (her excitement because she is being rapidly reinforced) so that she is much more willing to continue the behavior even if the cue (what you are offering to step up on) has changed slightly. Continue the process until the next "clean loop" then you can remove another finger. Hope that helps!

Why not? If it works for you and your bird...that is all that matters! Sometimes I scoop them up (in dangerous situations) with the right and transfer them to the left... they do not mind/ or the other way around. Sometimes he'll even ignore his favourite toys and treats and beg to go on my shoulder. Why is he so desperate to get on my shoulder? If he's scared then why does he instantly start nipping my ears (which he knows i hate) once he gets on?

I have a lilac crowned amazon and he will only get on my shoulder. I’ve spent hours trying to get him to step up to my hand but he growls at it a threatens to bite. He’s never bit me before though he just threatens and I remove the hand and walk away from him. I will try to get behind him with my hand on our next try but I a lot of the videos I’ve found are of birds not biting or making noise at the hand. He’s only 1 year and I was hoping he would forget his old habits since there’s no reason to be aggressive anymore. His old owner had him caged for 10 months from the time he was fully weaned he left him in the cage to the time we adopted him at 10 months. Maybe that’s why he fears hands so much he really wasn’t tamed ever. We have improved so much though he lets me scratch his head all the time and since I work from home he’s really into being on my shoulder while I work or do chores around the house. He gets to fly around the whole house all he wants all day long, he’s never caged unless it’s bed time and he puts himself in the cage and I just cover him with blanket. but it’s the aggressiveness towards human hands that’s really concerning me :(

Victoria Orellana maybe target training will help. Eventually you can target him onto your hand and he will be more comfortable with time. I think there are videos on this with Morgan

My problem personally is I don’t even shoulder my severe macaw because she’s nippy and love biting my lips. But wether she’s just stepping up or perched on her play gym away from me but it doesn’t because every single time she will fly to me climb all the way up to my shoulder and attack my lips, neck and ears and I don’t know how to stop her from doing that. It’s becoming quite unbearable

I have two cockatiels and they are very hard to train and I’m pretty sure they’re old so it’s even harder I’ve been living with them for two years and they’re still scared .When I try to tame them it doesn’t work so what should I do

Have you tried separating them? Are they in a cage together or separate cages? This makes a BIG difference. I have trained parakeets, conures, and Eclectus parrots.

I have kakarikis and they are even harder to train. But I love them anyway :) Don't focus on training them too much unless they have some serious aggressive/destructive behavior.

I did this with my cockatiel, now he hates my thumb. Hopefully, both behaviors will go away with more training.

You can't see sir because you're behind the dad but the dad is only giving one finger for the bird to perch on not all four there's where the problem is the bird doesn't feel secure on just the one finger and when the second bird did Step Up he never put his thumb down on the bird's foot and I'm sure that thumb holding their foot makes them feel more secure I don't know I don't have a bird. But I used to go visit him a call in a pet shop a couple times a week he was my Friday night date cuz my husband was always at the bar we're no longer married but anyhow the McCall would step up on my arm and then he would go in my shoulder I want to play with my earring but I would gently touch his beak and say no and he would behave we were buddies but I was paying $1,000 a month for my kids for their college education so I couldn't buy them. I often wonder what happened to him or her. And that was at least 20 years ago and I still remember that bird

Ive posted this before but no reply....very disappointed. My Amazon green parrot is stuck in our attic, she will not come down and it's almost 3 weeks now she's been hi there. She eats her food and seems relatively ok, Thank God. But no one is able to get her down nor is RSPCA helping her:( Can anyone please suggest how to get her down.....

Is she flighted? Does she have a cage you could put her food in and close the door when she goes in?

Try a catch and release cage filled with food. Do you have access for a full sized human to walk around the attic to catch it with a sheet or something like that?

I don't think this is a problem that can be solved over the internet. Seek out an avian expert in your area.

Maybe if you contacted them through their website, instead of posting comments on KZbin they'd be able to help you. Just remember giving advice is how they make their living. Would you expect a doctor to diagnose a problem for free from a snarky comment on an KZbin video?
