Erin Johnstone pilots one of the biggest helicopters in the world, capable of lifting 25,000 pounds. With its two 4,800 horsepower engines, the S-64 Crane is a real flying monster. “It’s a beast”, Erin laughs.
The last machine created by Igor Sikorsky was initially built for the Vietnam War to carry mobile hospitals and heavy equipment. It’s now primarily used for utility work, especially firefighting. Based in Canada, Erin is often in Greece, where her helicopter, equipped with tanks capable of carrying up to 2,000 gallons of water, is most needed during the summer.

I actually qualified as a PPL(H), and a work colleague has asked if I will take her aviation-mad daughter up. Of COURSE I will! We need more pilots like this!

We went to my folks for afternoon tea. Coming home an S64 crossed the road in front of us at dot height, refilled in a dam at the back of Macquarie Uni then went back to our townhouse. It dumped a bellyful right next to our fence - saved the place. It's why I got into EMS & fires. BTW Like Birkenstock too
