I've seen this on a boat a few miles out in the Atlantic made from an inner metal frame (with a small diesel engine, possibly russian) where the entire hull was just red plastic sheeting. I'm guessing that the Coast Guard spray painted identification on it to mark it as having been checked (not sure why they didn't sink it). Perhaps they took the Cubans out of it, or perhaps there was nobody in it when they found it - but someone did mark it with spray paint.

Grew up in the Eastern Sierra. Many crash sites. That brings back memories of my Dad and I leaving Sierraville enroute back to Bishop in a 152. Thunderstorms built up so fast that day and got so rough we ended up landing in Hawthorne Nv and spent 4 hours on the ground waiting out the storms. Also, hit the wave coming back from Porterville over Olancha Pass, ice crystals were blowing 5 miles to the east off Olancha peak, then it got really rough. Power back, little flaps and point it straight down. Get underneath the wave and fly low up the east side of the valley out of the wind and turbulence.

I didn't need to watch all of this to know what happened, when you said where it happened. 65 hour private pilot, 2 hours in type. That alone was a recipe for disaster. SAN to ONT to RNO.... Add fatigue and a pilot who didn't know what his limitations were.... I've got a 1,000 hours flying the mail in a Cessna 402B, between Vegas and Reno, in the late 70s. Some of the most challenging IFR conditions I encountered in my flying career were along that route. ICE, extreme turbulence, wind shear, severe up and downdrafts... and the list goes on. On one particular flight, I turned north from Beatty, and from there until I broke out over Virginia City, it was constant ice, as low as 10,800 and as high as 15,100 while trying to maintain 12,000. Mountain wave like I'd never experienced before... and as I was turning onto the ILS for 16R at Reno, the controller says... "Be advised, a Falcon Fanjet landed forty-five minutes ago and reported SEVENTY-KNOT windshears on final." Best landing I ever made that night, but it was a challenge I've never forgotten........... Flight into icing conditions, spacial disorientation, stall-spin to a graveyard spiral, both hands on the yoke and pull as hard as he could... right up to the time a wing separated.

Trent, really great infomercial, I'm going to be getting me one of these Insta360 Ace Pro 2's! Anyway this vid reminds of sometime late in the last century when me and a buddy were riding motos in central California and came upon a C-210 that had undergone a night time CFIT. Burned on impact. From the look of things it was a quite recent wreck and there were still a few human bones in the cockpit area. Animals had been scattering them around. When I got to a phone I called the FSDO to report it and after a bit of a run-around (different county, different FSDO) was told that it had already been reported and was about a month old. I was really disheartened about the piss-poor job the responders had done removing the remains. FAA guy said the weather was bad and they couldn't drive back in to the site until winter was over. Since no survivors they weren't going to risk a helicopter operation.

There was a plane crash over here in 1944 where two airforce trainees were on a night time navigation training flight in a Vultee Vengeance. Apparently they accidentally got into a jet stream which took them way further East of their intended route. By the time they realised they were way off course they were low on fuel. Both jumped out of the plane before it crashed. They came down in fairly dense scrub a long way apart. The pilot walked out a long way for help and the resultant search never found the navigator. Seeing that crash site a few months ago was sobering even though it was 80 years ago.

Mentioning the Owen's wave and Nevada triangle, you should check out Peter Stekel's book, "Final Flight". It's a story of William Gamber, John Melvin Mortenson, Ernest Glenn Munn, and Leo Mustonen. They were a United States Army Air Forces pilot and three aviation cadets lost in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks on November 18, 1942 during a navigation training mission.

The NTSB is one of the few federal agencies I truly admire and support. Their investigations are exceptionally thorough, and in this way, the lives lost as a result of an accident are not in vain, as they contribute to improving safety and preventing future tragedies.
@TheDude19Echo3 ай бұрын
Could not disagree with you more. To each his own I guess.
@Triple_J.13 ай бұрын
The NTSB has provided extremely detailed reports on thousands of aircraft crashes. The effort (and money/time investment) is usually proportional to the incident. E.g. Experimental gets little attention, certified light aircraft might have an on-scene investigation. Commercial is always investigated thoroughly. And airlines accidents are multi-year, 300 page reports. The NTSB has absolutely, and irrefutably contributed to vehicle and travel safety. As has the NHTSB. Although it can be debated whether another department or private organization could do better with less resources. For example, the Underwriters Laboratory has almost entirely eliminated house fires caused by routine ordinary appliance usage. With rare exception due to defects or severe misuse.

I've always wondered why Cubs don't have a removable weight at the tail so the pilot can solo in the front seat.
@Triple_J.13 ай бұрын
How would that work if you flew to another location and picked up a passenger? And what if you forgot the weight was installed, and departed with the cg aft of the neutral point? There are several reasons why not. And no real reason to, other than view of the instrument panel. (With perhaps three actual instruments).
@phantumdrummer3 ай бұрын
@TheJustinJ It would work in the same way the Bell 505 does removable weights. They have the weight mount on the end of the tail boom AND a weight storage mount next to the pilots seat. You are able to moves weights easily as your load changes per flight. Like when loading and unloading sight seers. Since pilots are required to insure their weight and balance is correct for EVERY flight, and they actually do it, it should not be an issue.

Life is very short even IF you survive it to old age. And old age comes very fast. Life is also very unfair and in an instant your life can be quickly cut short. For this reason, I think it's important to be self-aware and aware of others as well as aware of G-d. (I don't mean Christianity either) I mean, live life right. Be an honest person. If you don't want it done to you, don't do it to others. You don't have to have a tree hugging bleeding heart but take time to notice those less fortunate than you. It might be something as simple as helping someone across the street or come up with the last few cents at check out or maybe it's just being there for someone who has no one. On the Insta cameras. Impressive. I would really like to see them make an 8K dash cam capable of front and rear and side with good audio and a decent power supply that's not the cig lighter. I am so underwhelmed with dash cams right now. I have yet to find one that's worth its weight. Carry on!
