Scientists have been reconstructing the history of the moon by scouring its surface, mapping its mountains and craters, and probing its interior. What are they learning about our own planet's beginnings?
Decades ago, we sent astronauts to the moon as a symbol of confidence in the face of the great cold war struggle. Landing on the moon was a giant leap for mankind. But it's what the astronauts picked up from the lunar surface that may turn out to be Apollo's greatest legacy.
When the astronauts of Apollo stepped out of their landing craft, they entered a world draped in fine sticky dust, strewn with rocks, and pocked with craters. They walked and rambled about, picking up rocks that they packed for the return flight.
Back in earth-bound labs, scientists went to work probing the rocks for clues to one of the most vexing questions in all of science. Where did the moon come from? The answer promised to shed light on an even grander question. Where did Earth come from? And how did it evolve into the planet we know today?
The nature of the moon began to come into focus four centuries ago. Galileo Galilei had heard of an instrument built by Dutch opticians capable of "seeing faraway things as though nearby." Galileo, in many ways the first modern scientist, saw this new instrument as a tool to help settle a long standing question.
What was the nature of the heavens, and how did the world of men fit within it?
To some philosophers, the moon was a perfect, crystalline sphere of divine substance, free of Earth's imperfections. Galileo, with his telescope, saw a more familiar reality. He noted mountains and valleys on the moon, features like those of Earth.
The astronauts of Apollo lifted off on a series of missions to get a close up look at the moon and perhaps settle the debate. Because there's no atmosphere there, the astronauts entered landscapes that are nearly frozen in time. They could scour the lunar surface for evidence of events going back almost to the time of its birth.
Indeed, eons of impacts had opened up the Moon's interior, leaving a wealth of information strewn about their landing sites. Scientists had already noticed that some large old craters were surrounded by concentric rings. You can see one of the most pronounced examples in this image of the Mare Orientale, captured recently by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO. The colors show differences in elevation.
The old view was that the impact had melted the rock below. A newer view held that the impactor had actually splashed down on a molten surface. That gave rise to the radical notion that, early in its history, the moon's surface was covered in a vast ocean of magma.
When the astronauts arrived, they found relatively light rocks known as anorthosites. Their presence suggested that heavier material had sunk toward the moon's interior, forcing lighter material to the surface.
The rocks they brought back were found to be strikingly similar to those on Earth, in part because they share forms of oxygen, called isotopes, that scientists regard as "blood types" for solar system bodies. Then there was this. The moon appeared to be completely, utterly, dry, with no evidence that water was ever present on its surface.

I have a unique relationship with the Moon compared to most people. I'm 58 years old and have worked the Midnight to 0800 shift since June of 1992. The Moon, the Stars and the Night have become a "friend" of mine. My job keeps me up all night, every night and that gives me a unique feel compared to 98% of people. I often imagine what ancient men must have felt about the Night since I'm out in it 300+ nights a year. I'd bet the plains Indians 35,000 years ago had some very insightful, if not provable, theories about the Stars, Moon and Planets. Just thinking out loud...

Since the video was made, it’s been discovered that water ice is formed when hydrogen from the solar wind flows into craters and bonds with iron oxides.
@flyingnymphea88
@flyingnymphea88 Жыл бұрын
it's not limited to craters because it's about solar winds interacting with regolith and it's not even water because it's hydroxyl, known to damage living cells : when protons in the solar wind strikes the moon, they interact with electrons in the surface to become hydrogen ( H ) atoms -> these atoms then migrate through the surface and latch on to the abundant oxygen ( O ) atoms bounds in the silica ( SiO2 ) and other oxygen-bearing molecules that make up the lunar soil, or regolith -> together, hydrogen and oxygen make the molecule hydroxyl ( OH ), a component of water, or H2O => making water from this step will take a lot more research ;)

Our little plant (520 employees) is like a big family, with much pride in our product. We've had parts on every Shuttle and on Skylab. Also, proud to have had parts on ALL the Apollo Missions. We've had Astronauts visit our plant and give brief talks for employee morale. Go NASA!!! Thanks for all these vids.

It's due to the moon's closeness to the Earth and the strength of Earth's gravity, which causes a tidal lock and holds one side toward the Earth at all times. It's possible that tidal lock is encouraged by the presence of heavier materials on the near side as well.

A theory about the moon's formation that I recently learned in my Astronomy class was that a mars-size object 4 billion years ago collided into the Earth, thus taking off a part of the Earth. This chunk of debris then drifited off into space until it eventually formed a massive size rock with craters, valleys, and mountains that are similar to Earth. This chunk became known as the Moon. This is only a theory. It has never been proven, but I thought it would be interesteing to mention, since it pertains to the video.

Zack Sanders Well, that is a good point, but I like I said, this is just a theory and never has been proven before. Most Astronomers still believe that this is the most accurate way in which the moon formed, since another theory I learned about is called the capture theory which stated that the moon was floating around in outer space and then got captured by Earth's gravitational pull.

Tectonic plates started drifting after Chuck Norris's feet gripped the Earth and pulled it in the opposite direction of his morning jogs. One day, he jogged over Mount Everest and stubbed a toe. He got angry and kicked the Earth. His leg struck straight through the Earth with such force and speed that the Earth bleed magma deep into space. This massive cloud of magma slowly coagulated into what we now know as the Moon. The Moon keeps inching itself away from Earth because it is afraid that Chuck Norris will strike again.

How old the Earth is? That's something you learn in school as early as grade seven or eight, and is further detailed during high school. Earth Science, you know? If you're actually interested in finding out, you have to look up the information. Otherwise you'll just end up like a lot of guys who: 1. Don't understand 2. Are not willing to put in the time to understand 3. Then come on KZbin and say nobody else possibly understands

Thecommander248 - Lol hahaha 😁 Actually this video isn't educating anyone on how the Moon was created WTH??.. LOL HAHAHA 😁 really people come on!!!.. This video is for entertainment "ONLY!" No one actually knows a fucking thing how anything got created "THIS IS A FACT!" Scientists have "THEORIES" that's what it's called people - "Theory" They're pulling this completely out of their ass!!.. lol hahaha 😁 Because unless you we're there at the time watching it happen - You're guessing at best! I hate these videos because people just automatically believe this is "Actually Facts!" When it's just some random scientists asshole who woke-up one morning and had "THIS IDEA!" And the mistake people all over the world "ALWAYS DO" When any scientists come out and explain what they "Think" Everyone just accepts it and takes it as some Discovery as fact??. Why??.. Just because he went to college and he's a scientist??.. No! This is why humans are called MINDLESS SHEEP! Because most of the population always just believes anything and everything if it was stated "By a Scientists or our Government!" REMEMBER PEOPLE THESE ARE "THEORIES!"
