Bishop Barron I have been listening to you since you started Word on Fire! I grew up going to Catholic schools from first grade, high school, but I never heard anyone explain Scriptures like you do. Fr. Barron, you’re such a great advocate for the majesty of the Faith & how intelligent, rational AND beautifully mystical Catholicism is. We, that is to say the Body of Christ, need more men to fully surrender to God's will for our lives, so we can let Him talk through us. @@sydneydalmau1106 John was aiming at the Greek intellectuals. He was speaking in the language they could understand; he was showing them the connection between the Son of God and logos of the cosmos, and that this logos has entered time and history. Figuratively speaking, the Greeks are studiously chasing rays of light and John is telling them "here's the sun."

There is an enormous wealth of information that explains these things. True Devotion to Mary & The Secret of the Rosary by St Louis de Montfort are favorites of mine. The Blessed Virgin Mary in Scripture by Tim Staples does a good job explaining things. Writings and speeches of Mother Teresa. The list is huge on the why. As far as apparitions and such, we have to remember that they are private revelations and take the proper precautions of the Magisterium on them. Some are heresy...

@manutdfan4321 Jesus wants us not simply to believe in him but to participate in him. This means that we must think as he thinks and act as he acts, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul said that I might have faith enough to move the mountains but that if I have not love, I am nothing. I couldn't put it much more clearly than that.

@Mechanized0 ...Thus a man will tell me that in keeping Christmas I am not keeping a Christmas feast, but a pagan feast. This is exactly as if he told me that I was not feeling furiously angry, but only a little sad. I know how I am feeling all right; and why I am feeling it. When a learned man tells me that on the 25th of December I am really astronomically worshipping the sun, I answer that I am not."

@ascott251 I am a physics teacher, and I also have a degree in philosophy, and I would like to point out that, even when we look for patterns, we assume that we can understand and interpret those patterns. This is in fact a philosophical assumption at the base of science, and a necessary one.
@Pi10sco13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Chesterton quote. I for one do not worship Saturn or the Unconquered Sun either. Although some aspects of the pagan ritual, such as gift-giving, feasting, and the celebration of freedom, are not out of place as long as they are infused with a Christian spirit and practice. No doubt the Church Fathers felt similarly.

It's like a Father saying to his son, "Pull up your boots straps, become like me -- perfect!" And the son says, "I'm not perfect, it's hard, I'm not like you, an all powerful God!" And the Father says, "Yes, you are like me, I made you to resonate with me like tinker bells!" And the son says, "Please stop, life is hard, I'm like the grass that is trampled beneath hooves of your waring armies in this cosmic battle of Good and Evil. Take your war elsewhere, take your dysfunction somewhere else! Rehabilitate your son, Lucifer! We do it to our kind. We are compassionate. Give Lucifer some meds, put him on Freud's couch and ask him why he hates his Father... probably an Oedipus Complex... have him reenter society as a productive member, someone who bears your light. Don't watch him squirm for eternity in that Lake of Fire! Maybe he was jealous that mankind would eventually receive your favors and supersede him. He is a jealous and proud being like yourself." And God said, "Well, now that you put it that way, you have a point. I may have been a tad too hard on my family, I mean I didn't ever say to Adam what insurmountable and unimaginable horrors would befall him and his kind if he ate that stupid apple. That was harsh. Yes, no human mother would ever do that to her child. And, yes, humans are free but I could have limited their choices so that if they chose bad, they are not picking the most hideously evil actions imaginable. It's like giving children the option for guns and machetes when spit balls might do nicely. So, OK I was wrong. Can you forgive an old crotchety coot like me?" And the son said, "Yes Dad, because you can forgive us too when we are wrong." And then God realized he was God and the source of all Goodness and His Son Jesus was sent on Christmas to forgive everybody and their prodigal sons and fathers. A good time was had by all!

hello! I dont know if this will interest you at all, but I heard a setting of 'o magnum mysterium' by the great parisian (and deeply catholic) composer Francis Poulenc. To me, this captures how truly profound the nativity of our Lord is. Not sure if you care, but eh.

Father Barron, on the issue of Christmas, there is debate on a mythical being known as Mithras whom is said to be the reason for Christmas instead of Jesus. Can you explain more on him and his relation to Jesus? He is somewhat brought up by few atheists such as Stephen Fry.
@CoryTheRaven13 жыл бұрын
@xxHighChiefxx Mithraism was a Roman mystery religion contemporaneous to early Christianity. Its deity, Mithras, had his birthday placed on the winter solstice, which is a fairly universal holy day throughout different religions throughout the world. Some people like to make a big deal out of this and claim some nefarious act of plagiarism, but the truth is much simpler: the Church deliberately put Christmas on the 25th to coopt solstice celebrations and convert pagans.

Father Barron, I would like to here take on the sola fide vs faith and works debate. I understand where you stand on the topic being a catholic, but I would like to here why you believe in faith and works
@mrandquist13 жыл бұрын
@manutdfan4321 I'd like to comment as well. I'm not Catholic, but Methodist, but a lot of my recent conversations with Catholics leads me to believe we believe the same thing, just that we word it differently. We are saved by grace, but judged by works. The works we do is the proof of our faith. Without the proof our faith is dead. It is like saying "I love you" to your wife but never doing anything to back those words up. Eventually they will become empty words.
@AndrewScott3084713 жыл бұрын
As a physicist I would like to take issue with the claim that a basic assumption of science (there are no basic assumptions in science) is that the universe is intelligible and rational. To make that assumption would be skipping steps. Indeed some aspects of the universe may not be intelligible. We LOOK for patterns at the edge of that which is known, but it is not assumed that we will find rational explanations to all phenomena or that such explanations even exist.
@mdleavitt13 жыл бұрын
@jwbrock100 While I understand your point, I might disagree with you. We must recognize our weakness and miserable state to understand what a great and beautiful thing Christ did in condescending to come down to us. His Grace is so complete because of that condescension, not just to come here, but to do His Father's Will in not showing, but giving us "The Way" through His sacrifice and death at the hands of the people he meant to save. We are so low and only He can lift us.

"In seeking to understand A we make no assumption that such explanations are possible." That sounds logical incoherent" if you define that which you are looking for before you begin your inquiry your results can become biased. @rosycross34386 жыл бұрын
Bishop Barron, thanks for your usual great insights. There is something I have been having a problem fully grasping, it is based on the theology of John's gospel I believe, it is as follows (not even sure how best to ask/word it, here goes): How can Christ (the Word) always have existed with God as second person of the trinity? Is it that He (Christ) has always been separate from God in terms of the trinity. I recognize that God is spirit and would have only taken on human form in the incarnation in the person of Jesus Christ. Is it that there was an aspect of himself (God) that identified as the second person of the trinity which became enfleshed in/as Jesus? How can Jesus Christ always have existed? I ask this because before creation God was un-objectified as He had not spoken anything into being yet...so before doing so, was there distinctive trinity? Not sure if I have asked my question well enough, it is a complex concept for me.
@berserker965 жыл бұрын
Hi I don't have an answer for your question exactly, because it is a mystery...... But have you noticed that the year 0 A.D. is Christ's birth? He's at the center of all, and always has been... Also, John 12:31

Offtopic, but I alwats wanted to ask this to a priest: Considering how large is the universe, it's likely that somewhere other forms of intelligent life exist. The Bible, as it was written by people who knew little about the universe (I'm not blaming them) considered humans as the center of God's attention. However, IF other intelligent life forms exist somewhere in the universe, would you think they are also important to God? Would He turned into their flesh as Jesus here? Could they be saved?

@wordonfirevideo Oriented towards the intelligible though we may be, it is in the purview of physics to set the current limits on our knowledge of the field. If phenomena A defies explanation, we mark it as a current limit of knowledge. In seeking to understand A we make no assumption that such explanations are possible. The key point here is: if you define that which you are looking for before you begin your inquiry your results can become biased. To a hammer, every problem looks like a nail
