I'm trying to leave Australiastan as soon as possible so I can live somewhere I can work and thrive and where taxes are ideally 0% PIT so I can use crypto and not lose it all to the ATO as 'taxes'. Sadly the place is making it harder to leave - basically ALL 'assets' are subject to unrealized gains so you have to liquidate everything, pay the insane taxes, then pay the taxes on the money you take out of the country - leaving you with very little to survive on abroad. 'Assets' also now includes things that have never otherwise been 'assets' such as boats, planes, RV's, etc. (things that are normally considered liabilities / expenses) which are now being reported by insurance companies to the ATO if valued over $60k (approx. - I don't remember the exact amount) so they can do "Lifestyle Data Matching" and so they can interrogate you on where and how you got it (even though they already know due to their huge data mining), and demand unrealized gains tax if you leave. Oh, and that's assuming they let you leave, many people are being hit with regular jury duty to keep them stuck in the country and with licence related issues (incl. audits) to keep them stuck in the country. Combine that with the near infinite elections (at least 1 every year) and you can't change your electoral roll details (i.e. leave the country and get removed) because they freeze the rolls for elections, and they also freeze your individual entry whilst subject to jury duty. Australiastan is broke, thinks that all your hard earned money belongs to them, intentionally stops you investing and benefiting (the taxes make it not worthwhile) and then goes out of its way to stop you leaving after having regulated many of us out of work with insane BS professional registration schemes that are designed to force locals out of work (due to unworkable CPD and experience requirements) but makes the world of exceptions for 'skilled migrant workers'.

Unless you making millions of dollars and you, your juice are millions of dollars for taxes then it's likely enough to make any sense because once you move to other places you still have to rent or buy property. You still have to pay some taxes. You have to add the travel expenses and everything and if you draw the line again if you're not making a million of dollars so whatever you do makes not a lot of sense

If you held 6 months + and your gains arnt more than (i think) 40% of your annual income, then you just pay income tax on profits when selling, and capital gain on your overall wealth, canton dependant
@raphaelb5456Күн бұрын
Switzerland doesn't tax capital gains in general. You will be paying tax on dividends (I think now most cantons consider rewards for staked crypto to be dividends), but not on capital appreciation. If you have stocks in form of an accumulating ETF you will need to disclose and pay taxes on reinvested dividends (even if they are automatically reinvested). You do pay a wealth tax in Switzerland, but if your wealth is low there are generous exceptions and even if your wealth is higher, the tax free returns from your investments will more than make up for it (assuming you don't just burry cash or so). If you day trade, there are some tests which determine whether your activitiy qualifies as professional investing (in which case you might pay taxes at income tax level for capital gains).

Oman is a hidden gem. I spent some time there about 20 years ago when I was in the military. Arguably, one of the most stable governments in the region, great standard of living, nice climate, people are very friendly and don't get into your business. Because of oil reserves, every citizen in that country is wealthy, so no one is jealous or coveting your assets. Very low crime. Muslim nation but very tolerant of other religions (especially Christianity). When you go to downtown Muscat, you see many Muslim women wearing more modern, western attire. People always look at me funny when asked where I'd live if not in the U.S. but if circumstances permitted, I'd live in Oman in a second and not look back.

People who work for a living pay taxes. Why shouldn't people who make money off Bitcoin also pay taxes? Is unearned income "better" than working?? I bought Bitcoin at $11 (unfortunately I sold it before it hit $100K), and happily paid the taxes on it. Just like I do for my business. Because I value the infrastructure, educated workforce, security, stability, safety, and other benefits my taxes provide. I understand not wanting to pay taxes. But the more people who shirk paying for what we all get, the more we will end up like many countries that don't have infrastructure, educated workforce, security, stability, safety, and other benefits. When everybody shirks paying, we end up in a really bad place...

An episode on Latin American countries including El Salvador would be interesting. There are politicians in Washington that are mentioning possible "adjustments" to social security. Which countries can Americans move to where their wealth goes farther yet is still relatively close to the United States. That would make for an interesting episode.
