That is actually a valid reason. In India, especially the north, I found that many places that are not central locations have somewhat inferior roads compared to metropolitan locations. In such cases, taking a car with a high ground clearance even if it costs more than a regular car makes sense since it plays into the safety aspect of the passengers. Less vibration and shocks received by the passengers = no health complications such as spine problems or neck problems.

My dad bought the base variant of a brand new hatchback back in 2014 (it only had AC as a feature from factory) at a price lower than half of what a new-most basic car sells for in today’s times. I still drive it till date and will continue to do so until I squeeze every inch and drop of the car and its not road legal anymore. It’s sad to see people changing cars every 5-6 years just to stay with the trend. Someone said it true, “If it aint’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Bang on, you have done a fantastic analysis of how people specially youth is tilted for buying a depreciative asset for which they are paying interest also. This easiness of taking loan is also an alarming signal for banks as their NPA ratio on loan will also increase if emi is equal/more than the income. Really admire your research, at least some is doing something for society.

Totally agree with you. You should only buy vehicle which you can afford and fulfil your need. Don't buy a status symbol just for sake of approval. Back then i badly wanted an Octavia TSI but my budget was only 20L max. Seeing my desperation my Dad pushed the budget till 25L but the Octavia was still 4L over this budget. My dad would have agreed to it as well but i Reconsidered it all. Ended up with a top end XUV500 in 19L and kept the remaining 6L in my account and it actually came out to be a wise decision. XUV fulfilled all my unplanned needs which Octavia wouldn't've till date.

Used car option is good for essential needs car but not luxury as you arent rich but want to look rich which is what this video was warning about. At that expensive price point you are in the .01% of the creamy layer Indians and spend big money only to drive a used car that someone else is throwing makes no sense but simply to supress the bug in our brains that was created by the marketing team of brand. You will still be riding in the speed limits and you will still face the traffic just like everyone else. After a certain price point the features are only gimmicks, the video was even making fun of features in car over 15 lakhs as they are of much use.

One thing probably you missed on why people buy SUVs is the condition of Indian Roads in general. SUVs offer significantly better ride quality and higher ground clearance to tackle these roads. Earlier being able to afford an SUV was even more challenging as there were no 'compact' SUVs or low budget ones. This I think is a valid enough reason.

i think another reason for increase in the sale of SUV's is Indian market's shift towards better safety, which we have observed in all of Tata's models, which shows a sign of maturity and understanding of practicality of an Indian Consumer. Spending 8 -10 Lakhs on a Car like Punch or Nexon (which is a crossover of a hatchback and SUV but essentially has that SUV feel ) instead of Swift or Baleno or Brezza which offers shit build quality but high mileage, seems much more practical or better for an Indian Consumer. THere is more nuance in purchasing decision than just 'show off'. Also Financing a used car is shitty process and has a very high interest rate.

I'm not a financial expert, but i would suggest to to consider 2 things like, if having a four wheeler is necessity then spending 20 - 30% of your salary in a year and if it only for your needs then 10 - 20% of your salary in a year would not impact your financial stability. And one thing, don't spend too much on EMI...like if you could able to pay all the EMI's within 2 years that would add more stability to financial management and mainly gets rid of your EMI headache. I'm waiting for someone how could correct me if I'm wrong at this... It would be highly appreciated to share their knowledge here.

Lot of wisdom packed in small video. Hats off to the team for similar great content on your channel. I went against the market trend of show-baazi and bought Tata Tigor petrol. Literally No one buys this car. But it has spot on handling, steering, great suspension. Cabin comfort is great. Big boot that satisfied my touring requirements. Engine is not spunky and is not that refined. But the car is 4* safety rated. It is also very compact so I feel no stress when driving through tight spots, city traffic etc. With BH registration it costed me just ₹8L. Which is much less than 3 times my annual earnings. I don't worry too much on mileage as I know I haven't spent crazy amount upfront anyways. And I only took 40% of cost as loan, that too to save some liquidity. I may look small, insignificant in front of other 95% financed hulking "SUVs". But I know I have made the most practical decision both requirement wise and money wise. In a way I am standing out in the crowd now and I like it 😅

One perspective I like to add is, see car is a big one time purchase and will improve social status as well as specs. Lets say you buy a car with low spec - you will end up thinking to buy a better car in next 5-8 years. Rather then that paying twice. Proper model car even if its a bit expensive need to be bought so you can keep it for next 15 years. Small car will always need an upgrade down the line. I do think Indians are making right decisions because we are known to be good with money. Atleast compared with others.
