As a biochemist, you did a great job explaining it! I also appreciate you taking the time to humanize Gloria. Every time I hear this story I think about her children having to hear their beloved mother, who died tragically young, being described with such a callous and cruel moniker. I hope more people follow your lead and stop referring to her by such a terrible name. As a biochemist, I don't know exactly how the experiments were carried out (for instance: was her blood pH measured at the time she was brought in and then faithfully replicated during the experiments?), but overall, I think the 3rd theory really is the strongest. I once had a psychiatrist mention that more than 3 drugs being taken by a person means they truly have no clue how they are actually interacting and affecting the metabolism of each other, so depending on the actual totality of all medications, who knows? The kidney failure is interesting as she may have been taking large doses of Tylenol to help control her pain leading to injury of her kidneys, which may have been a contributing factor to what happened.

Hello! Studying undergraduate biochemist here. I agree with @jmgajda8071 and the 3rd theory, as it explains many of the symptoms found present during the procedure and autopsy. I'm going to try and break down what might've happened in terms of the contents found within her body post-mortem, so bear with me as it might get a little complicated. Tylenol (paracetamol) contains an alcohol atom in its primary structure. This, combined with DMSO (i.e. Frankincense gel), cobalt (II) chloride which is found in teeth enamels, and triethylamine (Et3N) found in grape wine combine to form an aldehyde. In the case of a rotting body in excess decomposition, this could very well be formaldehyde, also known as embalming fluid. With a litany of other side effects onset by terminal cervical cancer, an attempted overdose would not be far out of the question. Grape wine and Tylenol painkillers would be a likely conclusion to make if one were to be suicidal or accept their fate as such and go out their own way. Hope this helps a little bit as to the chemistry behind why the odd oil and crystals were found on/in her body and what combination might've occurred to cause such horrible decomposition in a patient post-mortem.

@@eddieburris675 Goria had cancer and had months left to live. At the time the chemical she probably used was seen as a cure all that was believed to help treat cancer so it is possible that she used over cleaner (which she would have been able to know had it) to try to help her situation since she couldn't afford and didn't want to go through chemotherapy for obvious reasons given her condition. My mother died of cervical cancer in 1993. She was in severe pain during most of the three years she fought it. She did not use DMSO -or so we thought... but after she died, years after, a friend of hers admitted to supplying and dosing my mother with it upon her request for the last several months, because nothing else was working on the pain. We had no DMSO in the house, and my dad knew nothing about it. Just because Gloria had no DMSO in her home doesn't mean she wasn't using it, or hadn't tried it for the first time that day. And, really, in all of the various versions of folks covering Gloria's case, the *only* "evidence" that it couldn't be DMSO that anyone has ever provided is her family's claims and the lack of the stuff in her home. Quite frankly, those pieces of "evidence" are no sufficient. Especially not when stacked up against all the actual science.

@joestarballz6296 what makes you think that? The police and EVERYONE were looking for Junko- just because it was delayed by 2 days wouldn't change whether the boy's parents knew or not. They knew she was there because they saw her. Why on earth would you think them knowing 2 days sooner means they'd call police themselves when they- just like everyone else in the area- found out she was missing after it was reported, knew their son was keeping her locked up in his room and very likely knew she was being hurt badly? I'm seriously trying to follow this logic where if they saw her missing on, let's say, the fupirst, they'd have reported it immediately but when they found out a few days later that she was missing (because it was widely reported, same way they'd have heard if it had been reported 48 hours earlier), that she was in their house and their son was keeping her I his room, they just decided "nah, it's cool. If it was super important we would have heard it on the news/saw a missing poster/whatever yesterday".

There is literally no way to describe the lvl. of torture & suffering that Junko endured. The lvl. Of torment & depraved prolonged torture is almost unimaginable how a human was able to survive as long as she did.. Every heart could ache for her throughout the entire world and yet it wouldn't even come close to what horrendous acts happened to her and the amount of pain she felt over such a long period of time. A detailed review of what specifically happened to her is so, so fucked up and I don't recommend anyone read it if very gruesome stuff effects u and stays with u because the details absolutely will. Every single person involved should have had the same done to them until death was achieved as justice. And even then, it won't ever make it right.

University, too--I went from a high school with a primarily caucasian, upper-middle class student body to a state school hosting people from all over the world and from all different backgrounds. The shellshock was unreal. This has had the side effect of me becoming much more aware and irritated by the casual prejudice of my family and those around me. Seriously, everyone needs to step out of their circle sometimes. Even if you can't visit other countries physically, it's really not hard to interact with communities from other areas. I have watched several videos about Junko(pronounced like June-Co btw) and every time I hear one I tear up and my heart aches for her and her loved ones all over again. I don't know why I keep watching them, but I think it's mostly because I think she deserves to have her story heard over and over again to remind us of how incredibly strong her will to live was, she deserves to have tears shed from others in her honor, and to remind us to be as cautious as possible because there are some truly evil people living/walking amongst us. This is one of the best videos I've watched about Junko. There's another video about her case that I watched that included such horrificly graphic pics and details that it literally scarred me so much that I could only watch it that one time, so I'm very grateful that this video didn't take that route. You gave just enough info for me to know she suffered without it making me sick to my stomach(I'm not exaggerating....that other video was A LOT to take in!) Thank you for that and also for all the work you put into your craft. You've done an amazing job👏🏽

This entire video essay (is that an appropriate name for it?) was so incredibly well done. Your work has always reflected the large amount of effort you've put into it; and still you find ways to improve. To be more cohesive in your scripting, in sharing facts and making your points while retaining audience attention while not undersharing OR droning on for too long (which I'm sure you already know can be difficult to balance when discussing information-heavy topics). The editing is always well done and is just getting better too, although I don't know if that (and sound design) is YOU or a friend/contractor/etc (if it's someone else, good job!) I just wanted to drop the (well-earned and true) praise, in thanks for keeping me company while I pack boxes to move. Thank you!
