With the Robert Wone case there was evidence that the men were into BDSM, in particular Joseph and Dylan - with Dylan being in the dominant role. It was also noted that Viktor wasn't so much into BDSM and wouldn't really join in on it. They also found evidence that Wone had climaxed and his bodily fluids were found in his rectum suggesting he was sexually assaulted (or perhaps willingly participated in some bondage play - depending on how you see things). They also found an asphyxiation device in Dylan's room that is used during BDSM sessions. A theory I heard was that Wone was potentially overpowered, drugged and assaulted by Joseph and Dylan but it went too far which lead to him dying or close to death. Joseph was a high profile lawyer in that area so this would have damaged his career and reputation so they had to stage it to look like an intruder killed Wone. The scream that was heard at around 11:30pm could have been Viktor discovering that his partners had accidentally killed Wone. I am so torn as to whether Wone was an active participant in the BDSM stuff or he was taken advantage of - for me there's a pretty good case that can be built for either instance. My heart breaks for him and his family either way - if he was gay (or bi) and had to hide that part of himself from his family or he was actually drugged and killed by his so called friends that night. Tragic either way.

@@Carolinefdq Actually, there's no evidence of that at all. It was stated in the video that the toxicology report found nothing in his blood. Also, why would they inject him numerous times in different parts of his body? The needles actually reinforce the BDSM theory because needle play in fairly common in BDSM and that actually would explain the numerous different puncture sites.

One red flag from the First case for me is their lack of paranoia after the attack. If you had someone break into your house and murder a guest, you would be freaking out. Are they still there? But police investigators are not idiots, either - if four people are inside a walled space and one of them dies violently while the others are present, the most likely explanation is that at least one of them committed the crime. I grew up in the area! Every once in a while, it’ll come up in conversation. The Tommy Lynn Sells theory is generally considered garbage. Something about Mt Vernon that feels significant is that it is a crossroads where two interstates meet. Basically, great place for crime/movement. It’s a straight shot down from Chicago, through Champaign. You got St Louis straight to the west, Louisville to the East. Ina is directly south of Mt Vernon. Keith Dardeen was, factually, a good man. He and his family did nothing to deserve that kind of death, which is usually reserved for the men who screw over some Chicago mobs. And their families, of course. Ina is remote - don’t let the population number fool you, they started counting the inmates at Big Muddy State Penitentiary into the population in the 90’s. Remote, quiet, boring. Great place to stash things. All in all, the theories around town are 1. He turned down requests (demands) from a mob to be a stash house/mule, or 2. Mistaken Identity.

Keith's mother said in 1997 that drug trafficking was one of her theories- that her son had been asked to or was involved as a mule. I agree. That would explain the personal nature of the crime, the calculated way the different weapons were used so nobody would hear the gunshots and nothing could be tied back, the taunting act of parking the car at a police station, the fact that Keith was killed first and separately, the fact that marijuana was present but the autopsies found no drugs in their system, and that the point seemed to be to eliminate his bloodline. This doesn’t seem random or the work of a serial killer. This feels like Keith crossed some evil, powerful people who have an honor code and think they are more powerful than police. I think the family's minor financial problems possibly could have led to Keith being introduced to that world through someone he knew from work. Factory work is known for hiring former felons. Since rural Illinois isn't known for mafia or cartels...it wouldn't surprise me if an outlaw biker gang did this.
@katymaurer388
@katymaurer388 Жыл бұрын
That part of Illinois is not unconnected from the mob. I used to live in a town a few miles south of Chicago, along I-57. Part of that history is that Chicago mobsters fled south out of the city, once various law enforcement agencies began really cracking down on organized crime, I think after the 60s? Maybe the 70s? I-57, and other state highways like Rt 50 and Rt 1, were and are very important routes to get from Chicago down to Kentucky. Based on when this happened, I don't think it's inconceivable that the town of Ina still hosted a few former mobsters, or at least, their operations still passed through the town.

The Dardeen Family massacre is sickening. Interesting how the only two suspects: Tommy Lynn Sells and Angel Maturino Resendiz, led very similar lives. The local panic caused by the Dardeen case reminds me of some of my earliest memories as a kid. My parents and I were living in a very quiet, very safe SoCal town called Mission Viejo when Richard Ramirez, the "Nightstalker" was running loose, raping and killing people. His last two vicitms were a young couple who actually lived in Mission Viejo, and the young man was a cousin of one of our neighbors. Just a few days before the attack, my family and I, along with most every other family on the street, had been at a bbq with that couple at their cousin's house on our street. It was terrifying to turn on the news to find out the dude who had been playing catch with me last Sunday was now clinging to life after being shot in the head. The level of fear in the community generally, and among the tight-knit group of neighbors on our street specifically, had already been high, but when the news came that Ramirez's latest victims were people we knew, my quiet street in the quiet town lost its collective goddamn mind. The men, including my father, set up a schedule for night time watches, and they walked the neighborhood all night in shifts with guns; the mothers went around to each other's houses checking the locks on all the windows and doors, and generally making sure everyone's houses were secure. We kids were simply not allowed outside except to go straight to and from school, which sucked for 80s kids accustomed to running around and playing without constant adult supervision even well after dark. And I remember one neighbor who lived a few doors down, an older widower, who sat out every night until they caught Ramirez on his porch with a shotgun and a bottle of Jack Daniels. The wonder is that none of the jacked up, heavily armed and poorly trained neighborhood vigilantes accidentally shot each other. Things got a little better a week or two after the Ramirez's final attack on the people we knew when the police were able to identify him from a fingerprint left in a car he'd stolen--up to that point, no one knew who the killer was, which was really the scariest part of the situation--and it was only another few days before he was caught by a bunch very, very pissed off of people in East LA. They recognized him from his photo in the newspaper and then damn near beat him to death. When the police showed up they had to save Ramirez from the angry mob, who were whaling on him with bats, tire irons, kitchen pans, and anything else they had handy--it was glorious. So the lockdown and extreme paranoia didn't last too long, and it probably couldnt have been sustained anyway, but regardless, for a couple of weeks, people who lived in what seemed like one of the safest places anyone could imagine were afraid to go to sleep in their own homes. And that's a rare and transformative kind of fear, which most Americans, thankfully, will never experience.

Pure speculation: I think Robert had something going on with one or more of those guys. He said he needed to stay the night there, "because he didn't want to come home from work late and wake up his wife." What? What kind of excuse is that? Men come home from work late all the time - many of our wives don't even wake up and those that do are glad to at least see us before going back to bed. This excuse makes no sense to me - no one does that. He had a purpose for going there that night.

Looking up Sells, it does look likely that it was him. He liked to attack homes with a mother with young children as well as committed several murders with a weapon he found on the scene, and several of those with blunt objects. Many of his killings were not motivated by anything other than the pleasure of the murder. Personally, I think sells ambushed Keith outside the home, possibly while out shopping or after work. He shot and killed him, then took his keys to use to gain entry to the home. Which is why their is no forced entry, as well as why Sells could take his time. There is no reason their would need to be more than one person to do it, and given how hard Sells tries to justify his actions, if there was a seconds person Sells would have made it out to be their fault.

For the first case, I actually find it suspicious that their stories match up perfectly. If they hadn't agreed on one story to tell to the police, it would make more sense if they had differed in some small details, because no eyewitness can recall an event perfectly, and the human mind starts altering memories almost as soon as they are made. So for them to not only not change their story as time passes but also keep details consistent between them is suspicious as hell. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but the human mind is not a camera and memories aren't static, we continuously re-write memories when we recall them.

I have a theory about the lady who knocked on the dardeens door. Maybe it wasnt a trap kind of thing but more of a stake out kind of thing. Maybe she would have actually used the phone but took the whole event as an opportunity to "inspect" the prey. Just a thought, but honestly how often do people knock on strangers doors to use the phone and how often do those strangers end up being murdered in such a manner not long after? If that lady had anything to do with it, I believe the premeditation began with her knocking on their door.
@nm7358
@nm7358 Жыл бұрын
Your position presumes quite a lot. There were no cell phones in 1987, people in most American small towns in 1980s felt so safe they often wouldn't even lock their doors. Hitchhiking was rampant in that period, too. The possibility of a random person showing up and asking to use a phone because they were stranded or their car had broken down was just part of small-town American life. These were just different attitudes in a different period; many people were indeed that doe-eyed and innocent about stranger danger in the 1980s. Criminals definitely used that tactic to attack at random, but true crime broadcast shows like Unsolved Mysteries that warned of such dangers were just beginning in 1987. In this particular case, the sicko or sickos who committed this horrible crime wouldn't have needed to stake anyone. They just needed to pick a home at random and find an excuse to get inside. For all we know, maybe the door was indeed just left unlocked.

But I’d assume if she felt safe knocking at their door, only to have no response, she’d probably go to a neighbors house asking the same question. It wouldn’t make sense to me that she would go to the Dardeens’ house specifically to ask for their phone unless she knew them personally, which she clearly didn’t according to how the story goes.

This is the first time I've ever heard of the Dardeen case, and I've lived in Illinois for most of my life. I have a theory that it's connected to what was left of the Chicago organized crime. Ina is located on I-57, which is the main interstate to take to get from Chicago to Kentucky. I used to live in a town along I-57 further north, much closer to Chicago. Part of my town's history is that in the 50s and 60s, a lot of Chicago mobsters fled south out of the city as law enforcement agencies began cracking down on organized crime. Houses in my county, in very rural towns, had secret garages built under the houses with the entrances hidden from view so people could come and go in secret. So, based on when the Dardeen case happened, i dont think it's inconceivable that there were still drug runners in southern Illinois making a lot of secret money, and Keith either got roped in or saw something he shouldn't have seen. Plus, if there were still mobsters down there, it explains how they taunted law enforcement by leaving Keith's car in front of a police station, and they knew how to not get caught.

Succinylcholine could have been used on Mr.Wone. It is a skeletal/muscular relaxer used in surgery to imobilize any involuntary movement and causes a state of paralysis which sets in after 60 seconds and lasts 5 or 6 minutes, can be prolonged with subsequent doses ( which would account for the multiple injection sites on his body) and which dissipates rapidly and leaves virtually no traceable amount in the body. It does not impair consciousness, nor is it an anesthetic. He would have been awake and conscious throughout the ordeal.

I live just a couple of miles from Ina and this area has never been a "high crime" area, its very rural and peaceful like it's always been, most of the crime happens in Mt Vernon and it's not even very crime ridden, whoever did this to Keith and his family knew him as it was personal, that becomes obvious when you consider that his "member" was cut off and shoved into his mouth, a random killer doesn't do what the savage pos did in this case, i think it's a local man who probably still lives in the area. For the Dardeen family. Could any friends or other family be considered for the case. Considering how paranoid Keith was it seems like he would not let anyone aside from people he knew close to his house or family. Maybe he or his wife had a falling out with someone they knew and that person came back for "revenge". Because as someone else in the comments states, the murders seem very emotionally driven. Either way, ots extremely saddening and may they rest in peace.

The first case is bizarre, but my theory is that the three men injected their guest with empty syringes to give him an embolism, or they used a rare poison like curare, or a more common one like GHB, which standard blood panels don't always cover. Then they put him in a shower or bathtub and exsanguinated him. I've heard of the case before, but the thing that makes it so intensely creepy, is what the hell was the motive?

Something that occurred to me upon watching this again and reading a little about the Dardeen family: Their killer did have a second weapon on him. He had a knife. He didn't stab anyone. I think this killer knew enough not to stab anyone because brutal stabbings lead to cut hands. Keith might have been quite dead (I'm guessing he was killed and medically emasculated in his car, based on the description of of the inside being "spattered" with blood) when his manhood was removed, but I think that happened in his car. What's strange to me about the car is that his car was found outside a police station, 11 miles from the Dardeen home. Did anyone look into a cop having done this? Presumably, the killer had blood on their person. They then left the victim's car outside of a local police station. What if the person was in a dark uniform? My ex used to wear those dark navy poly pants as an EMT. Those were chosen because they hid EVERYTHING that could get on a person during a call, and always cleaned up just fine. People wouldn't necessarily see any blood on a dark police outfit. If a cop came to the Dardeen home, claiming to need to speak to Keith - Keith, who most likely would have grabbed his keys to lock his door before stepping outside to speak to this uniformed police officer - who then pulled a gun, forced Keith into his own car, and had him drive himself to that wheat field where he was found. The car was then brought to Benton and left there (there's no information, but I'm guessing it was left in an on-street parking spot and not in a parking spot in front of the building). The killer could have been a Benton police officer; or they could have done this late enough at night that no one took notice. Either way, the killer's own vehicle was probably nearby. The killer could have then used their own vehicle to drive back to the Dardeen home to kill the rest of the family. Who would do this? No idea. My guess is that it's related to the "young woman" looking to use the phone. She may have been looking for actual help. Perhaps, whoever she was trying to escape knew she'd gone to the house. Perhaps the killer thought she went there because Keith was known to her, and the killer was jealous enough to kill her presumed lover and his family of witnesses. Perhaps this jealous lover of a "young woman" was a cop. We may never know.

The Dardeen case gives off the vibe that it was a crime of passion, like the killer(or killers) felt so hurt or wronged by someone in the Dardeen family that they had the urge to do something so violent as this. If it wasn’t that kind of crime the there would’ve been other murders like this in brutality(cause a crime of passion, once you commit the crime you’re not exactly going to be itching for your next victim, a serial killer on the other hand would be committing more murders of this nature), the reason I would even suggest the idea of a serial killer is due to the brutality and efficiency with how they managed to evade any evidence connecting to them(not to mention the planning it would require to successfully leave the bloodied car at the police station and then dump the fathers body in the woods without anyone suspecting or seeing anything, that’s an experienced killer whose done that before except we got no other case similar enough to make a connection). I do think it was a crime of passion, and perhaps the killer has some ties to law enforcement(because how else are you going to be able to drive a blood soaked car to the police station, get out of the car covered in blood, leave it there, and then walk away covered in blood, all while there being a high chance of someone being in the immediate area that could’ve seen that sequence of events) and thats how they were able to get away with or at the very least was able to cover up any of their tracks(not impossible, golden state killer is probably the best example of serial killer cop using his position to evade suspicion)

The simplicity of wanting the car makes sense, but I think the part hes leaving out though is that he killed keith probably after a car jacking and than perhaps read the address of his ID and figured a woman and child alone would be a nice easy kill and he could even drive up unassumingly in her husbands car.

In the first case, Robert could have been given a dose of insulin which could have easily put him into a coma but just as easily a small amount more could of killed him. There was a case many years ago of a man that was using insulin to put his wife into a coma so he could then rape her. That could of been what the killer or killers were trying to do to Robert. The thing about insulin is unless you’re checking the blood in a particular way or in a certain amount of time it will never show up on a toxicology report since it’s naturally found in the body.

He might have been suffocated to unconsciousness before being stabbed, or even was dead when the stabs were made, as dead bodies don't bleed the way living ones do. There's so many possibilities for how the first case could have gone down, it is indeed frustrating to try to come to a solid conclusion.

They said he died from the stab wounds though. I was thinking that they suffocated him during some sexual shit and they thought he died, but was just unconscious and then stabbed him to cover their involvement and make it look like an intruder. People have been mistaken for being dead while they were only unconscious thousands of times...so much so that people were buried with Bells attached to strings in case they woke up after they've been buried...though doesn't seem too hard to check a pulse and if air is coming out or in from someone's nostrils 🤷
