It really annoys me when people argue about BJJ vs striking effectiveness etc... As a grappler myself, I train striking (mainly boxing, a bit of Muay Thai) because I know without it you're not as good a good fighter as you can be. Solid BJJ + wrestling (and/or judo) + striking skills = a complete, incredibly dangerous fighter. That's when your grappling is the most effective when you are not afraid of punches, can go 1-2 combo and shoot for a takedown (if it's safe to do so, taking somebody down on the street is a dangerious thing in itself, you never know if his friends won't suddenly show up and jump on you). For all BJJ guys, doing at least 1x boxing/Muay Thai etc a week will give you much better fighting skills. Also, I think training BJJ with a scenario of getting punched (visualizing it) is a good idea. So you don't just chill in a closed guard while being on the ground. You need to escape ASAP or you'll face get SMESHED. Additionally, pulling guard etc is good for competition but I find it a really bad habit for self defense. Learn takedowns and throws.

The thing is most street fight situations are not going to be fair. The last thing you wanna do is roll around with some dude while his friend comes from behind and soccer kicks your head in. Also there’s no rules on the street if someone thinks you’ll genuinely break their arm in an armbar they’ll just take a bite out of your calf or you’re nuts in a triangle, or perhaps you may even get slammed on concrete. My advice is always stay on the feet so you aren’t caught in these situations and you can escape when needed.
@skyrimaddic873 жыл бұрын
A little situational awareness gets around the first step. If someone bites you you’re not going to die, break their arm most normal people will switch up their tactics at that point. One is way more likely to be freak knocked out rather than losing a fight to a bite or eye poke tactic especially if they have no training
@oranges5573 жыл бұрын
Right, i definetly never want to go the ground infront of a nightclub or a bar. Its too uncontrollable environment. Most streetfights are not 1v1. Better to stay on the feet as long as possible. If it has to be, wreck him on the ground.
