I believe it was Saint John Chrysostom who said that when you come to pray, "light your candle and close your eyes knowing that you stand in the presence of all the angels and the saints before God." This piece would work well for that. Lord, as you know and as you will, have mercy.

the way you pray this, i have heard, is you inhale while reciting the first part: 'kyrie iisou christe', then exhale while dying the second part: 'eleison me'. the strange thing is that i tried it one night for about an hour while in bed, and i started yawning and getting tears, but gradually felt comfort in my heart.

Years ago I started reciting the Jesus prayer in the car on my way to and from a stressful job. It replaced the Starbucks brew usually there for sipping. I figured out the breathing on my own as a way to keep it more regular. I felt calmer on the job to deal better with the situation. Saved some money too!

Beautiful! The more people pray for God's mercy upon themselves the more they will heal, and heal thousands around them (paraphrased from Saint Seraphim of Sarov) Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy upon me. And upon Thy whole world. Amen.

I'm a Quaker and we traditionally eschew any prayers that aren't spontaneous and Spirit-led. Luckily I'm not a traditional Quaker and my practice includes Quaker as well as Christian, Buddhist and other expressions of spirituality. This. Is. Gorgeous. (Although, I'm biased--I love Bjork and have for over half my life, since the Sugar Cubes. She does not believe in God. That's cool. I thank her for bringing this powerful prayer to me, to help me when I need it. I've found power in this prayer and she's made it beautiful. Her own concept of a deity doesn't affect me. Her art does.

I didn't know she had recorded this. Thanks for uploading. It's beautiful. On a purely emotional level, which seems to be where Bjork draws a lot of her artistic inspiration, it feels like it comes from a place something like the track Generous Palmstroke. There is that sense of simplicity, humility, longing, trust, giving oneself over.

Tavener wrote this especially for Bjork's voice? Good call. She brings her sense of earnestness to this beautiful piece. I always loved the sort of "purity" of her voice. She doesn't hit all the notes, it must be said ... but she sure does feel them. And she seems to innately know how to transmit that depth of feeling too.

She expresses the comlex intense feelings during a long extensive lonley prayer. The things which want be said here are not primely in the simple repetitive lyrics, they are mainly in the many different expressive emotions which were presented through the singing but too komplex to put them into words. Björk is the best representator for this cause she has the multilayer requirement in her great voice and is an very complex character who really knew how to express herself and her feelings trough singing. They could not have dound a better one for this I think.

@bronsonisr - "Jesus Christ's prayer" is a very short prayer, which is associated with a christian school of thought/sect called "isihasm". The isihasts would aspire to say this prayer in their minds constantly, all day, even during sleep somehow, in order to dedicate their mind to the worship of Christ. One must remember that this was mostly practiced by hermits and monks. The idea of constantly repeating a phrase such as this seems like something Bjork would take interest in, musically.

BTW "Lord Jesus-Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me": "The Jesus Prayer" or "Prayer of the Heart" is an ancient practice of the Oriental/Orthodox Church. Search: Hesychasm, Nepsis, Mount Athos, Gregory Palamas, read "The way of a pilgrim" (a classic of russian spirituality), watch (for example) "Early Christian mysticism: The Jesus Prayer" by Ted Nottingham on KZbin: History, then explanation of the practice in the last 10 minutes. And have mercy and more if you feel like it.

Hi. The English composer John Tavener (1944-2013) wrote this piece with Björk in mind, to suit her unique voice. It is a setting of the ancient Christian 'Jesus Prayer'- "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me" in Engish and Aramaic.
