The 40x reduction in fuel cost at high speed is super impressive and massively disruptive. I can see the dynamically adjusting foil (at 100x per second) and the 80HP torpedo pod drive becoming mainstream in all sorts of pleasure and business craft ranging from jet ski (oh the peace and quiet!) up to the family runabout and fishing sport boats. I can also imagine much larger hybrids with multiple torpedo drives.

Fantastic! I started 20years ago as a young engineer to design podded drives for ships (as referred in the video too). I have also been boating since turning 13, driving Tesla already 3 years now. Working on such project would have been dream ….right down to my alley 😁 Only thing I would advice to change is to make the propeller pulling…i.e. propeller first, strut after it. You can gain few extra % efficiency I am pretty sure. Keep going! Making functional serial production boat like that requires lot of efforts. Nice video Björn 💪 I like these non-auto related refreshing videos once in a while in your channel. Next electric tractors, lawmovers, sawchain…. 👍🤷‍♂️

I briefly looked at some other comparable boat and Candela price point seems to be very reasonable to me. You can achieve silent sailing with sail boat and now with this. That might be worth some serious money in itself. Running cost of gasoline / petrol powered boat is quite a lot of higher (said 40x in video), and even more so when you include service needs. As far as I can see, main idea is this very small dimension but powerful enough motor+properller that enables hydrofoil. I guess you can not do it as nicely with conventional methods. Idea as such is not totally new, Azipod is 35 y old. Main issue probably is charging infrastructure. But there was something about that in another TB video, so I guess it is in the end alreadyu and easily solvable issue. Boating is something where you "arrive" first thing after you leave your initial harbour so charging time is not critical. Very enthusiastic presentation. Good luck.

I think for regen you need a crazy strong current! As you felt, the 55kw pm motor has a fairly high friction to overcome to Start and stay turning. Ontop of that as you mentioned the blades are very small, so almost no attackarea to harvest the energy from the current. I think solar would harvest way more energy, especially because you are mostly out on the water on sunny days. The question would be how much would e.g. 100kg for All the tech would effect the efficency? What is the loading capacity btw?

one the one hand, an amazing boat! beautiful and ultra efficient, on the other hand, i have a hard time calling it a environmentally friendly solution, as none of it is recyclable, while old boats can simply be scrapped and re-purposed, probably just 10-20% of this boat can be recycled, the rest cannot be. then there is range, for a car this is quite predictable, as weather has minimal influence on how far you can drive, but with boats this is very different, especially an ultra light boat that sticks out above the water. so i imagine range anxity is much more of an issue. once your in the water with a dead battery, what can you do? since the motor is just 55KW, id still opt for a hybrid solution with a small and light diesel generator, i think a 3 cylinder diesel, say from a smart car could generate enough power to take you home and charge the battery at the same time, it would be an important safety feature.
