@OenkePoenke3 жыл бұрын
Efficiency difference is quite BIG between 450+ in it's most efficient trim and the 580. WLTP range of 450 is upto 768 km, while 580+ is 671 km and the config you've been driving (if I got it correctly chosen) is 654 km "only". That's 114 km difference in WLTP range or a gigantic 17% more range for the most efficient 450+. A 1.000 km challenge in summer conditions would make a BIG difference when driving the 450+. The 450+ in the same config (wheels & stuff) as your test car would have 720 km WLTP range btw. I'm sure you know all that, so this is mostly for the other watchers :-) Still very exciting to the the EQS in real street action and an interesting test as always! And achieving a time unter 10 hours in winter and calling it "slow", well that's funny ;-D Today's EVs realy have evolved! Thumbs up and many thanks for the test, Bjørn!
@Raptorel3 жыл бұрын
Do you have any data on the EQE? Thanks!
@dragosmihai34893 жыл бұрын
The 450 would probably be more efficient, but I don't think the tires and temperature would make such a huge difference. Those would only impact aero drag and tire energy losses. If those are predominant, it would mean the powertrain is super efficient and DC loads are super low, which dunno, are they? The car feels well rounded, and they've done a great job to charge fast, but the power consumption is staggering.
@OenkePoenke3 жыл бұрын
@@Raptorel You can find the EQE on Mercedes-Benz dot DE already, with some data: Upto 660 km WLTP, upto 215 kW, charge time 32 minutes 10%..80%. The battery will be the same as in the lowes trim EQS, the 350, which can already be ordered in Germany. 90.6 kWh net capacity. You can find more data on Wikipedia (english and german version, the english one holding more data). The EQS 350 has officially (upto) 638 km of range with that battery, so the EQE will be even more efficient (as it's less wide, and less heavy, which counts in WLTP's city sections). Downers are, the EQE's boot is 430 litres only (see the vido I mention below) and will have a classic compartmend lid rather than the EQS' hatch door. So classic sedan style and a rather small boot for such a big car. Reason according to a german youtube video I saw is, the door would have taken roof space, which would have limited the passengers' head romm. As the passenger seats are as far in the back as possible to enable max knee and feet clearence. That might turn out to be too much of a compromise to some. We'll see. I've watched some german EQE videos when it was revealed in static reviews in september. Looked them up, see e.g. Auto Bild's video from 5th september.

I suppose it’s a press car. I’ve been in car PR myself and I can only shake my head at the fossil policy of full spec Christmas tree press cars when it comes to EV models. @@kiddcisco sorry to be the bearer of bad news! I only returned it about 3-4 weeks ago. I got a fully loaded model with performance pack, leather and everything. I went through 2 updates, P2127 and then 1.7. Each time the update left me with no GPS, LTE and I was left driving a dumb car for weeks at a time. Polestar also delayed CarPlay, which might have helped with the connectivity issues. They also reneged on the remote parking assists on the P2 despite being advertised earlier on. I also experienced issues with Google Assistant randomly crapping out and the phone app rarely working - if ever. In addition to software issues, my brakes also used to get stuck on the rotors after driving/parking in the rain (and I've seen others complain on the FB group about this too) and cause a thumping noise when driving until braking in neutral "wipes" whatever residue away. Overall it was a frustrating ownership experience for me and thankfully my dealer wanted to make things right and took my car back instead of making me suffer through it, for which I'm glad 🙏 I can't wait for my EQS to get here, I do think this is the right car for me.

Like I would rather have a longer travel time in EQS then shorter travel time in the Kia.
@jobicek3 жыл бұрын
It's not a trivial question. I would prefer to spend 7 hours in a luxurious train to spending 5 hours in a luxurious car. If I'm driving, I have to drive. It's five productive hours lost. Driving faster means less time wasted. Spending more time in a better car? I guess it depends on how much I value my time vs. how much more tired/ worn out I would be from the worse car. It's nice when a train is fast, but it's even nicer when it's on time. When it's comfortable. When you don't have to change trains multiple times (being on time helps with connections, but it's still nice when you can sleep through a journey or at least you don't have to lug your baggage around again and again). Speed helps in competition with aircraft. But it's not the most important factor in making the experience pleasant. Speed is, however, an important factor in how often you can make that trip (the other is price). It makes the world smaller.

27:00 From what I've seen, the single hardest concept for people to wrap their head around is that the driving itself still takes a majority of the time. It's like people in fossil cars think that they just teleport from place to place. No, driving takes time. Even in a slow charging Chevrolet Bolt EV (which takes about 11 hr 45 min to do 1,000 km), more than three quarters of the time is spent driving.

Drove the EQS 450 the other week and it's a really nice car, I loved it. I have a Plaid on order but will also be really interested in the EQE coming to Sweden this spring. Hope you will test that one to... Would be interesting to see you do a range test on the 450 as it suppose to have a ot better range and did amazing in an US test (I think it did ca 670km). I love the details you go into in your tests, with also the charging speed at different %(which I realised is mega important for me and my ID4 is way to slow), the long 1000km challenges which for example showed a problem with the otherwise really good ev6. Can wait for you to also test the new model s plaid or longrange! Great review as alway!

It’s nice looking for an EV, but an E or S class look much nicer in my opinion. I think the EQS is designed with good aerodynamics as a priority, hence the blobby shape (like Tesla model X and Y). @@PatrikNordlund I would not necessarily drive 450 km without a break. It is dangerous - but without charging. Ski trips, traveling under time pressure etc.. Was traveling 280 km one way and back, twice per week for 6 months under time pressure… For me 450 km should be possible under all circumstances at 130 km/h also in Winter. This would require a wltp range of 700 + km at least…

It is quite interesting that the profile on the EQS is very similar to the Citroën C6 that came on the market 16 years ago. Of course, the cars can not be compared and I must say that Mercedes-Benz has really constructed something special with this car. In a figurative sense, EQS is very similar to how the W126 (S-Class in the period 1979-1991) was in relation to the competitors. Absolutely unique and with an appearance that only Mercedes-Benz had at the time.
@ModPhreak3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly Bjørn did do a comparison with a higher speed limit as well some time a go, would be interesting to keep track of projections with 130km/h as well where the ICE cars shine.... he might still have it, I forgot.

Can anyone offer a good explanation why car manufacturers don't insulate battery packs properly? I have a hard time to believe that Mercedes' engineers haven't come up with this idea. But why shouldn't one do it at a high priced vehicle like this?
@topgunm3 жыл бұрын
You can't isolate it too much. Charing, hot weather and hard driving (track) heats up the pack and it needs to be cooled down. You need a good cooling and heating circuit for the pack. If it's too cold, divert heat to the pack, if it's too hot, the heat needs to be pulled away from the pack.
@Nelson-Man3 жыл бұрын
@@topgunm This may be a reason for it but I don't think it's a good one. Because when it gets really hot the air and especially the asphalt, which is right below the battery, can get well above a tolerable battery temperature. Then additional heat flows into the pack by conduction and radiation. At that point you have to use AC to cool down the battery and insulation is helpful again.
