I'll never understand fans that forget that actors are just people living their own lives too, not their property or whatever parasocial delusions they might have 😢 Fanservice can be soo cringey and I hate when it feels like they're forced to have any intimate moments, even if just friendly. 'OMG, they touched shoulders!' Sheesh.... Anyway, love these q&a's and congrats on POT! 🎾😊

The actors and film makers do it as well. You see them purposely hanging all over each other without fans asking for it. that's because they want their product to be successful. You can't just blame the fans when the film makers understand the actors getting shipped helps make their movies or TV shows more successful. So they "show off" when in public for exactly that reason.

I think it might be one of those chicken and the egg things. Maybe fans spotted a real spontaneous 'moment', reacted to it and that made people want to do fan service to generate a similar response. Or maybe fan-service came first.

I agree here. I am gay and I find it cringey when fanservice gets too touchy and they are not interested and I can feel that. I am so glad that the only thing I've ever tweeted at you is "The most relatable part of Cutie Pie is Perth trying to eat his own bills, because same bro, same." Some of the things I see "fans" tweet at actors... I just want to walk up to them and go "Would you say this to their faces? No? Then shut up." It's just social decency.

But, I too, lived years without that 2 and sometimes am as surprised and am like "Seriously guys, you do realize that they do read and understand that?!" "I sometimes really don't want to know what our favourite Artists thinks what's going in the heads of their audiences!" It goes from "lol not wrong but did you have to put that online? Gonna be so embarrassing in xy time!" to "This now in the end is just delulu and 2nd hand embarrseement!" Whenever I think of fan-service, my mind just goes, “Why?, just why?” Personally for me, the couple starts and ends with the series. Shipping actor’s is weird. People need to be able to separate the actor’s from the character’s they play. I honestly do not get why they make something so simple, so complicated. Anyways, great video. It was a great way to end my day.❤

As always, I appreciated how sincerely you answered each question. Granted, you speak from your own experience however I do believe that it gives us a great insight in the industry whose products we consume. I also appreciated that you mentioned the s. harassment that the actors are constantly being putting through since it quite often, feels way too out of control (my guess is that sometimes, some people, forget that you guys are human being that will see that specific comment!). So again, thank you Perth for the video and good luck with your projects in Japan!

I think the kind of interesting thing is that I don't think the people saying those things would say them to you if they met you in real life. But since everything is online there's a sense of anonymity and also they might not think that the actors actually read their comments (we do).

10:59 speaking as a bi person with some gender fluidity, at the core it is very simply a person loving another person. The differences are superficial and also come down to the individual. Gender is an aspect of a person but there are so many other factors. You don't love them because they're a girl or a guy, you love them for the person they are. When you describe the things about someone you love, many of those things won't be gender-specific, for some examples, a sense of humour, kindness, passion for art, dedication to their family or their business, shared values, adventurous, quiet... Anyone can be those things.

exactly! 🙌 when someone asks that question "what did you first notice/were first attracted to... ?" who says "he was a boy/she was a girl" ? it might be something physical yes, but not that they were purely a 'male/female'.
@IrinNovy
@IrinNovy 8 ай бұрын
@@kristalclearly9777because it goes without saying. It's different for bi people since they are attracted to both genders but for straight or gay people it is the first thing, which is so basic that it doesn't need to be mentioned. You are just not gonna see any other characteristics in a romantic light otherwise. We form our first impressions of people in the first 10 seconds. We decide if we are attracted to them in that time too. So yeah, you notice a nice smile, a good sense of humor etc but it's always in regards to platonic or romantic feelings (friendships or sexual/romantic relationships).
@monazite5488
@monazite5488 8 ай бұрын
This is all of course true, but I think most people are more skeptical about straight people playing gay roles because straight people won't ever fully understand the nuances of homophobia and discrimination that gay and LGBTQ+ people in general face, as well as just the complex identities they formed growing up that straight people just didn't experience and thus would kind of only gain some sort of understanding by talking to queer friends. Thus, people think straight people may not completely get the character their playing, which is a fair concern. However, when the characters someone's playing don't really deal with the complexities of a queer identity in a drama, as Perth's really haven't, then I think the concern about straight people playing them can be soothed since a straight actor could understand them more easily.

I think Perth gave very thoughtful answers. I've been part of the BL community a while, and with my peer group, our entry was through manga or novels. Thailand had Love Sick in 2014, and back them bilingual Thai fans would sub the series. Even GMMTV's SOTUS and SOTUS S were not subbed upon release, it was fan subbed. I think this is why international fans always had a close relationship because we appreciated how fans would literally gave up their free time to subtitle shows, or translate manga to English, just for the love of BL. Chinese fans were also very dedicated until the law changed. It has taken years for China to produce the soft BL/bromance they are releasing now. China used to produce 18+ content in the past. I consider fan service as acting, and with the wages in Thailand, I do not condemn artists for doing ship work. I think the actors should be honest about their relationship, that they are just acting partners. By sending mixed signals or being ambiguous, it gives some fans hope that people are really in love, when they're not. I actually feel bad for the fans who really think that people are a real couple. Fans will fight in the comments over it, or go nuts if an actor has a girlfriend. Back in the day, poor Krist from SOTUS had to say he and his girlfriend of 5 years broke up. Whether they broke up for real, I don't know, but that's the boundary that I think should not be crossed by fans. Cut the overt sexual crap at fan meets and just have fun.

I agree that recently actors have calmed down with the fanservice and I appreciate it a lot. As you've said some like it and some don't, I personally just like to see the cast getting along, including the lead couple but putting on an act for fans usually feels weird to me, especially because it creates such a problematic interaction between fans who do and the ones who don't like it meaning especially the ones that do like it also always "fall" for it in the sense that they throw big words like homophobia around whenever people tell them that it's in fact just fan service and that said actors have neither confirmed nor denied dating or even being into people of the same sex. As you've said, it's cool just taking it with a pinch of salt and having fun with it but unfortunately there will always be people reading way too much into it and genuinely believing these interactions to be true without there being any form of confirmation. But I feel like recently it has calmed down, everyone is just promoting their shows, having fun and getting along in a friendly way which is so fun to watch.

Love that you pointed out the BL stories have become more complex. I think in the past the themes were quite repetitive and kind of one dimensional but now the stories have so much depth and character development and that’s been my favorite part of the evolution of BL. I’m also so so happy that GLs are becoming more of a thing because queer girls deserve representation too!! That being said regarding the comment about “mature content” I think it makes sense when it fits the story, but sometimes it does feel forced and when it’s forced it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The great thing is that because there’s so many BLs you can really choose what fits your preferences, there’s plenty of soft and cute dramas and there’s plenty that have mature content as well (and by mature I mean not just sex but themes that include violence, trauma, etc).

At the beginning I did not know of fan service, so I thought everything is genuine and they are together in real life. 😂 But honestly, I’d rather there would be no fan service pressure at all. Fans have gone too crazy because of fan service. Going to the extent of hating specific actors because they broke the “couple” and decided to act in straight dramas only or couple with someone else. Some fans forget that actors just do their jobs at the end of the day. Or fans hating on the actor’s real life partners because of the show “couple”. This is just wrong. If I like an actor I like him or her for their talent and for how they portray a role. Some fans just want to dictate everything that the actor is doing in his or her life.

Anyway for recent BL, it’s not just saturated, it’s over saturated so for me, it’s simple, any trailer than doesn’t catch my attention automatically gets pushed down and I wait and watch for stories which trailers catches me. Mature content or not, for me it’s the story. Yeah I can consume mature content for the sake of it but it’s kinda like fast food, people can get bored easily even though it’s yummy, fast and convenient. Great job Perth with the Q&A. It's so interesting to hear about your perspective from a thai (bl) actor himself! I personally mostly dislike fanservice, especially when the actors are forced to do things they are not really comfortable with it, but do it bc they know the fans love it + their series get more recognition. Also, fake/pretend relationships are so awkward. I do love real life chemistry though, whether that's just because you are great friends, have a close bond, or in some cases, a more romantic connection. It's just nice seeing people work together and actually having fun together! 11:21 "we are all going to die anyway" 😂 But seriously, I've always said this myself; as long as you are not hurting someone, just do whatever you want/makes you happy! Congrats on your role in a musical 🎉

I am rooting for natural chemistry only like you do but I think they've already got it that it's way much better and more successful that way so they created those workshops for actors to give them time to adjust and dig deeper in the connection they have. So it's happening. It's not so depressing if you think about it. Basically most actors have an intention of being really friendly, lovable and understanding of each other and it's not for the sake of money or fame, it's for genuine purposes. For us.

You as a actor give us all a much wider look about life around us and always there to help us understand things within the Bl acting world. Thank you for being you and sharing your thoughts with us. I look forward to seeing what other work you do. Ram is still one of my favourite characters!

Thanks for the Q&A! It was really interesting. "Unless you're super duper famous, beggars can't be choosers." This makes a lot of sense haha I also love what you said about people loving people, I don't think I've heard from a lot...or from any Japanese 2.5D actors talk about their thoughts like that but it would be great if you could be open about that in Japanese too. Unless you're somehow not allowed to be (in Japanese(??)) Anyway!! Good luck at Osaka and see you at the end of your Tokyo run!! Can't wait to see you sing and dance about tennis!

The thing about the sex sells (I know you covered it with "mature content" but let's call it what it is), it's true that having intimate scenes in a series makes people talk and even watch it. We've seen it with some series going viral beyong the BL community. Personally, I don't mind intimate scenes but sometimes it's quite obvious they're added just to "satisfy" a certain audience. I wish BL producers would focus more on writing complex characters and leave out these scenes that are just there to make people scream at their screens. Or rather implement them better into the story. There's a series currently airing that perfectly does that, it's a fun watch while also offering great plot and drama. It's all about being authentic while still making something fun or exciting. We've come a long way since those early BLs and at this point there's some really great stuff out there. I hope we'll continue to make good content and not add scenes without context just for one sole purpose

Also congrats to you for realizing all of the awesome opportunities you get as an actor vs. the typical “family dad” you will not regret this time I promise you! I missed out, being a stay at home mom myself even tho I graduated from college with honors. And now I barely just got a job as a front office receptionist. Take the life opportunities you can! Experience as much as possible while you can! Love will be there but it will take a lot of your time so it will be better to have experienced life first and then settle down you will feel like you have lived your life and are ready for the next chapter. So don’t compare yourself to others from your personal life. You’re doing amazing!

Love your channel. Just here to tell your followers that there is another group of fans of BL series. Yes we retired people over 60 😍Many of us older folks are only discovering BL. Unlike your younger followers we see BL series as a wonderful travel back in time. The stories, places, fashion and styles may be different but the emotions of gay love, the hunting, the jealousy and finally finding the person you love remains the same. Keep up the good work and hope to see as a very successful actor soon. 😍😍😍

Hi Perth. I usually see your videos but never comment on them. Just wanted to know that I enjoy these kind of videos where you tell us the behind the scene as an actor, super casual and chill. I wanna make a small appreciation on the "Life choices" part of the video, mostly because it shows you have auto-critic (a must do for an actor if you ask me). And you don't only think of the "what if..." (which we do not have any kind of control over of what hasn't happened) but also focus on the good experiences of life that got you here. This is toootally subjecting but, I do think you do like acting and It's really great you are having all of this cool opportunities. Congrats on Prince of Tennis! ♥

I'm glad you shed light on that last question. I know there is talk with the cast members on how far things would go in certain scenes before they're even hired on, at least letting the actors know so that they can make informed decisions. When we see the end product, we have to understand those actors went through workshops and managed to create a connection and are comfortable with each other. I don't think there is any pressure placed on them to do more mature things, you explained it very well and I thank you for it Perth.

I feel like the fan service debacle can clearly divide fandom, and from what Ive noticed, international fans are the ones who don't need/want fan service, who don't care about it, while the Thai fans want it, sometimes even demand it. It seems to me like a lot of Thai fans can't distinguish between onscreen stuff and reality.

It also seems quite connected to the age of the fans, from what I've observed. Some younger fans seem to have less awareness of fan service being part of people's job.

Actually, it's more about the age of the fans. Not all Thai fans want fan service, I mean, they do enjoy it at some certain levels but not all wants it. And like I said, it's about the age of the fans, younger fans seems less aware of fan service being part of the actor's job. The older fans are very aware of it, they can differentiate whether the pairing's relationship is real or fan service. They enjoy it at certain levels of fan service and some likes to joke with actors about the actors being in a relationship, it's a way of their joking and dream, that's all. Yes, they want their pairings to date for real but they also know the limits too. Younger fans are less aware.

I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts in this. For me, and maybe many others, My Engineer was one of the first BLs I ever watched, and while it was an enjoyable series because it was one of the first BLs I'd watched, it will always be a memorable thing for me. It's funny, when I was just starting out watching BLs -- only last year -- I didn't intend to get as deeply invested in the genre as I did. But watching My Engineer, I discovered you as an actor, and because I enjoyed your performance, I actually used MyDramaList to kind of guide my journey as I trusted you from an acting perspective if that makes sense! So I'd argue that if I hadn't seen you in My Engineer, I might not have discovered and enjoyed other BLs that I ended up enjoying, and I may not have gotten as invested in the genre as I have! So thank you! Good luck in your musical by the way! I hope it's an amazing experience, and does really well! I appreciate your work ethic! It's a "Yes or yes," kind of thing. Was THAT a Twice reference? Love it if so! I completely agree as well about your thoughts on 'mature' BL content, as being an adult as well, I don't want all the stories to be Engineering students in University -- and there are more stories and themes to explore outside of that! Thank you for this video!

Regarding the last question, I think there's still plenty of innocent school story type of BLs - it's nice to have a range of series to choose from! I've kind of outgrown school stories, but as for innocent vs. steamy, it just depends on what I'm in the mood for. And now I can pick according to my tastes rather than just watching the few crumbs I could find :P

I loved this! The mature series question, I 100 % agree with. Some days I want fluffy, like MSP, some days I want sweet romance, like ATOTS, and other days spicy, like KinnPorsch. However, I don't feel any entertainer should be pushed into doing more then they are comfortable doing. The last question's answer was so honest and I feel the same way. If the scene is just gratuitous, leave it out. I want the romance, the storyline, the emotions. Thanks Perth. ❤❤ from America

I started watching bl in 2018, back then I watched basically anything I could get my hands on 😅, but for the last couple of years the quality of a lot of shows has dropped because there are now so many being produced. But the quality of the good ones has definitely improved since 2018, there is now a large variety of storylines and characters. I don’t really mind fan service but I don’t pay much attention to it, I prefer just to watch the drama, I do watch a lot of kpop fan service though so my views are a bit conflicted. I don’t like forced fan service, I am also not a fan of fan service that is portrayed as being real or ambiguous.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us and help us understand the BL industry a little more. I have a few thoughts to share as a BL fan. Fan Service - I find it confusing because sometimes it looks so real and come to find out it's "fake", so it leaves me with a not very good impression. Mature Content - I personally feel less is better than more about how explicit a scene really needs to be. Unless it truly fits the story in an authentic way. Most of the time a more tasteful thoughtful scene without everything being shown, is way more expressive and emotionally fulfilling as the viewer. Best of luck with your role in Japan!! PS - I visited Thailand this summer and watched your Thai language video first. Thank you for everything! ❤❤❤
@ukiss4ever7
@ukiss4ever7 3 ай бұрын
Fan service is not always negative and is not always fake. Even normal people do fan service for a certain reason and level too. Fan service is made by an agreement from the actors of which level they want to show their fans, but those services are NOT always fake. You have to realize which is fake and which is genuine, but if you can't tell by facial expressions and action microscopes then you won't be able to differentiate it. You have to look at their facial expressions and body language, if you see their comfort of being around one another then they are genuine. But if you see stiff body language or slightly a face that aren't "real", then that means it's fan service. However, doing a fan service, both actors have to make an agreement.

Great video Perth. Thanks for answering the questions! I liked how you answered truthfully how you cant turn down roles. There are actors out there that are just trying to survive. They don't have all of the likes & fame as the popular actors do. What do you think actors in general need to do to become more popular in the acting community?
@Athlynne
@Athlynne 8 ай бұрын
Thank you, Perth! Please keep doing these, I love them! I'm pretty new to Thai BL and you've given me so much fascinating info about it. I'm really glad you addressed fanservice - I know it's popular, but I've seen SO many fans saying, and I agree, that we'd rather not have it if it makes the actors at all uncomfortable or causes them any trouble. Personally, I think if the couple is not actually real, they should stick to only behaving like friends at events and such. I cracked up when you said "ain't so good at reading Thai," I immediately thought of Gemini raging at his documents in Cutie Pie, LOL. I hope this doesn't come across as offensive, I don't mean it to be, but I have to say - I wasn't aware you're straight, Perth, and while yes, you're right, people are people, it doesn't matter...not every actor is willing to portray characters who don't share their orientation, so permit me to respect you even more than I previously did. Omigod, you're doing Tenimyu?! Congrats! Jesus, what generation are they up to now? Can you tell us who you're playing?

Great discussion. I think you are totally right about how BL’s have exploded onto the International (United States in particular) and the market is saturated. Saying that I have learned to pick and choose the ones with more Mature Content (after watching several high school and college romances) because the content is not what I am looking for anymore.
