Detailed instructions for tying a Black Beauty Midge.
Recipe:
Hook: Scud/emerger hook (here a Lighting Strike SE5 ), size 22.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Rib: Copper Ultra Wire, extra small.
Abdomen: Black tying thread.
Thorax: Black Super Fine Dubbing.

Here in western nc midges will regularly out-fish spinning rods in pressured waters. these are a killer change up from a zebra midge on dark days where the flashy bead is just a little too much. I also really like tying this with a less flashy rib for dawn dusk and cloudy days, as I like to drop shot nymph as opposed to euro I find using unweighted flies a benefit. Sinkers are much cheaper than flies

I’ve been tying these with a silver countersunk tungsten bead and some Ice Dub in Peacock Black. Sz 18 or 20 working good here in Georgia.

One of my go-to flies when there is no hatches. This fly works in still water, pocket water, rapids, etc. Could you consider tying a Zen Crayfish or similar pattern in the near future?

I am a newbie to this and was wondering if you use a magnification lens while you tie? Looking at a size 22 kind of freaked me out and I think I will get a lens but didn't know how much magnification it should have. I appreciate any thoughts you have. Your videos are fantastic I look forward to every one of them

Garrett Wilson I originally had the same thought when I started tying but I noticed it’s really not bad without one. I just noticed it’s important to secure the hook correctly in the vise so you don’t have too much of the bend stuck in the vice
