Hi! Here's a Black Cat watercolor commission, I did the sketch on Photoshop and print it very lightly on watercolor paper to add color traditionally.
I start by adding some line-art with a deep purple Prismacolor pencil first, I mainly focus on line weight by adding some thick and think lines to accentuate weight and form on the figure. Once my line-art is done I go over with a wide brush and do a base texture with watercolors, I use Sennelier watercolors for this one, I start with a gentle pinkish tone and do a first pass then I dry the paper with a hairdryer just to speed things up.
-Once my paper is dry I start laying colors to the line art, the rule is to keep it loose at first and later on focus on doing detail work, this is important since going for detail too soon can make the image feel very unbalanced and usually ends with a very uneven image.
-So a I just go and have fun with the watercolors by playing with gradients and texture, not focusing too much on shape but looking for interesting transitions, textures and color mixing, it's important to lose fear of messing up, it's by messing up that we learn new tricks, sometimes a mess-up can be a distinctive feature in your drawing and there is ALWAYS a way out, it's just matter of persistence and becoming good at improvising but this only happens if we loose fear of messing up and try.
-I call this gap "loosing respect" to your art, sometimes we become intimidated by our own work, because we reach a point were you have spent hours, brainpower and work on an image, so the longer we work on it the more respect we have for it and the more fear messing up keeps increasing and as a result we take less risks. It's essential to not let your drawing overpower your willingness of trying new things.
-Once I feel pleased with a good base of colors I start refining the drawing with prismacolors, this is to add details on certain areas by polishing edges where needed, adding gradient effects and even light and shadow.
Then on large areas like the hair I'll go over with white acrylic and add some volume to it, it achieves a new subtle contrast since I did a gentle base tone beforehand.
