@@twntwrs Stating that homosexual unions are not marriage as traditionally and historically defined is not homophobic. It is an accurate statement. He isn’t going around persecuting people but trying to be accurate about words and definitions. Disagreeing with someone doesn’t make them an -ist or a -phobic. Name calling is a low level move. Debate him and his ideas but calling him a name is a sign of losing the argument.

@swcordovaf I agree that name-calling is not an acceptable rhetorical move, and that you ought to debate ideas you don't like rather than attack the people that hold them. So let's actually talk about it: In our society, there are certain legal and social benefits that come with recognized unions ("marriage"). For example, married couples get certain tax benefits, and socially they have legitimacy (premarital sex and non-marital arrangements were deemed socially unacceptable). Homosexual couples understandably want to have same-sex unions be socially considered to be just like traditional "marriages" - they want to enjoy the same legal and social benefits that heterosexual unions provide you in society. This is part of what it is to live in a secular society: laws and social tolerance are not based on any religious framework. To the extent that "marriage" is considered a religious concept, it can't be the benchmark for what is legally and socially acceptable in a secular society - hence it needs to be secularized. You can secularize it by saying: "the thing that we legally and socially recognize is a civil union between two people who are committed to living together as intimate partners and functioning in society as a couple". If you don't want to call that "marriage" for religious reasons, then fine, call it a civil union. But in that case, just realize that legally and socially, "marriage" is going to be treated as just one form of recognized civil union, just like any other - not the only acceptable form of union. We can get into which types of union are and aren't acceptable if we want: - opposite-sex partners - same-sex partners - 2 partners - 3 or more partners - unions that involve children - bestiality - etc. But I'll pause for now and see what your reply is.

There is exactly nothing original or brilliant in Squires's ideas. Read any christian fundamentalist, black or white, since the second Great Awakening in the United States, and you will see his ideas. He's repeating stuff that fundamentalists have been saying for two hundred and twenty years. Nothing original here. And nothing fundamentalist is brilliant either.

Not to suggest they are antagonists though, on the contrary, I think deep down Glenn is closer to Delano than he cares to admit. It was fascinating from start to finish to hear both of them exchange their ideas. I condemn the podcast only for how short it was! I could have easily listened for another two-three hours. It is a tough nut to crack, no doubt about it. After all, we’ve been trying to fight the natural order of things since the agricultural revolution of the Neolithic.
