If America is structurally racist because of capitalism, why are Nigerian immigrants so prosperous and so welcome here while so many American-born millennials are so ignorant and despised? Why are Nigerians so well represented in the US small business community and so poorly represented in Antifa and BLM? Perhaps the woke can explain.

Typical racist! I'm kidding... When Malcolm X famously said "The White Liberal was the most dangerous person in America to the American Negro" he forgot to add 'and equally dangerous is the Black academic '. When I was in university studying African American Studies we had just began to introduce Ebonics which we all thought was a joke. Who is laughing now. God bless you mister Nigerian, you make every lazy person look awful! Keep pushing the standards!

One of the differences between Nigerians and West Indians in the UK is that the latter are mostly descendents of working class immigrants who came over on the Windrush. Nigerians are largely (not all!) from educated middle-class and wealthy families. Would you agree ?

As a former adjunct professor in the United States, I can tell you, I saw a larger number of Nigerian students. A few were embarrassingly lazy. But 90% of them were the most academically rigorous students I've encountered. They were interested in business and education. Many of these students could have taught the class without me.

so the logical question why can't it be duplicated in Nigeria... sick and tired of the simplistic trope using africans and nigerians to "bash" others. i am african and continue to ask myself that particular question... some of our foremost intellectual leaders were educated and trained by black american professors and thinkers... I have met black americans who moved to africa and were very successful...simple fact the immigrants puts in his best away from home nothing magical ... so stop this nigerians or ghanaians or carribeans are smarter, have a better work ethic nonsense... i never hear europeans doing the same again and again.. italians in the US have achieved greater heights and it is not used against italians back home...

Standards have been lowered across the board producing a generation of college graduates that simply are not as well educated as college grads who came before them. I have British-Nigerian friends. They tell me that British Nigerians don't get along with other black people from the Caribbean. Nigerians tend to value education and usually have professional careers. The arguments in Parliament between Kemi Badenoch (Nigerian) and Dawn Butler (Jamaican) are fascinating for white people. Both groups came to Britain voluntarily. Badenoch is a conservative and sees Britain as a land of opportunity, whereas Butler sees herself as a victim. Immigrants from the Caribbean started arriving in the 1940s and they tended to do menial work. Their ancestors were slaves. Badenoch's father was a doctor and she has a law degree. There are clear class differences. Nigerians probably look down on Jamaicans.

In UK the majority of Caribbean immigration was postwar and working class with the expectations and habits of that class. Those from the middle class tended to perform well academically. @@GeorgeSzirtespoet There aren't stats for black AND working class available......that's my point! UK Gov only conflates class and race for white population, to make any fair comparison impossible. It's a dishonest misdirection, that too many people fall for.

The west African immigrants are mainly from working and lower classes and the middle classes mainly return back to Nigeria and with the few staying put in the UK.

What people describe as Nigerian mentality in the UK or an 'Asian' mentality in the US (attitudes of working hard and achieving academically) are really immigrant attitudes and can be seen all over the world in the immigrant population (less so in third and subsequent generations).

I know that in the early 20th century, all disparities observed in Black Americans were blamed on genetics, but in the 21st century, all disparities are blamed on racism. Too bad the public conversation is not permitted to look at other possibilities.

Let me give you my insight. I’m white, but Jewish, my mothers side is irish (british but I personally grew up in Canada and moved back to the UK at 14) all my life I did what my father told me to do “don’t tell people you’re Jewish” however I never hid it, if it came up organically I wouldn’t shy away from telling people. People who had known me for a long time didn’t treat me any differently when they found out, I’m me, end of. People who did😮know me would look at me and re evalute everything they knew about me with a new twist of “he’s Jewish” many people were incredulous, they couldn’t believe that they had grouped me as white Christian or atheist and never questioned it. I personally smoke weed and for the same reason I never tell anyone, I don’t want to be pigeon holed by other peoples pre conceived notions of what a pot smoker is like. Both things are technically part of me, but they in no way define me. What defines me is who I am and how I treat people. I would be pretty upset if I didn’t have the opportunity for someone to get to know me witho😮the cover I have of simply not telling anyone. In fact, I once had someone treat me pretty badly because he thought I was American, when he found out I was Canadian, he was relieved, he apologised for all the dirty looks etc. I don’t think I have ever found someone as detestable as that guy, he didn’t know me, we had never met, my behaviour didn’t change from before he knew to after. What I’m trying to say is, your race and your ethnicity, your religion, your accent, all these things are completely arbitrary when it boils down to it and much of how you behave really relates to how others treat you because of those things. I feel more of a kinship with you two men because I feel like we are on a similar wave length than a guy who I have never met no matter his race or colour, and I see no issue with that. People want race to be important, they want religion to be important, but they aren’t. I want to be judge for me, for what I bring to the table and nothing else, and it’s important to me that I treat others the same because I always hated the feeling of someone re-evaluating my worth based on something they often knew absolutely nothing about.

I have never been to Europe however I noticed when watching British TV series the difference in society and black Brits. I noticed more integration of blacks and very little victim mentality. The series with black protagonists were portrayed without a racial emphasis to the point that one did not differentiate characters by race only by gender. Which in itself today is tricky .

Victimhood is easier than doing the inward work that intellectuals like you have done. We have lost humility. Confidence is knowing who you are inside, the only way to know who you are is to do the inside work and facing difficult impressions of yourself. Having the humility to boldly look at your demons and scare them away, is too psychologically difficult for some.

31:53 I’ll put it this way! Their once was in between that was documented but now it’s a very subtle thing that requires a metaphorical disentangling. The lines are far to blurred between the collectivist group and those historically are individualistic.

It might help to know that one's position on issues like race is not really so tightly bound to a political party in the UK like it might be in the US. A number of parties large and small would be associated with generally woke sympathetic mindsets and an equal number with woke critical ones. Quite a number of people who might have been considered left wing are critical of woke ideas but would not be sympathetic to the Tories.

@@ondolite3789 Here's several: 1) Capitalism and white supremacy are intimately linked. 2) Capitalist societies are structurally racist and transphobic. The only remedy is socialism. 3) Poverty and police brutality are deliberately orchestrated by white capitalists. 4) People are not individuals, but are instead products of the intersectionality of their group identities. 5) The members of some races and ethnic groups are ethically superior to others. 6) Wealth gained through business ownership is unethical, but through looting is ethical and even laudable. 7) People who support the police are fascists, while people who support violent gangs are progressive.

Langston Hughes wrote a series of poems called "Shakespeare in Harlem," modifying the form as well as content of the sonnet to the black experience. He didn't dumb it down; he didn't reject the western tradition. He realized he was living within it, it had all kinds of merit as an aesthetic tradition, and he engaged with it successfully, expanding its qualities. This is the equivalent of recognizing that physics is OBJECTIVE and about as far from racist as it's possible to get, so get on with dealing with it as it is, and if you see some perspective left out of its method because of its cultural origins--expand and perfect it, don't reject it.

I agree mostly re standards. But even here, I was in a HS class with lots of first generation Americans (Europeans to - so not a race issue) and they all had lower SATs for their verbal scores than did the rest of us - even kids in honors classes who were academically very successful. So sometime you have to judge the results of a test differently because of the reality of a candidates life.
