A rapper by the name of Joyner Lucas released a viral sensation song accompanied by a music video entitled “I’m Not Racist” which deals with the topic of current-day race relations. Lucas himself is not actually in the video, but he raps the parts of both people who are featured in it.
The first person to be shown is a white male with a “Make America Great Again” hat on. He lip-syncs along with the music, giving a convincing performance. His message was that black men, and black America in general, essentially need to tighten up and do better. However, he drops the “n-word” over and over, which is most likely what Lucas thinks the average while male Trump supporter would do if they were able to speak openly and freely to a black person.
After the white male is done with his “side” of the story, the black male who he was rapping to in the video then gives his side. His appearance is probably what Joyner Lucas thinks the average white person thinks a black person looks like. Very dark skinned with a unique hairstyle, wearing a jersey. He launches into how he feels about what’s been happening in the news. Feelings of racism due to people being against the NFL protests, Black Lives Matter, and more are revealed here. At a certain part of his rap, he slaps the Make America Great Again hat off of the white male’s head.
Both sides of the rap were sitting down peacefully essentially allowing the other to get their point of view out. At the end of the video, they embrace in a hug then they appear to have a conversation with each other in a peaceful way.
As a black conservative male, I took this video to be what the average black male thinks about white male Trump voters. He thinks that they are secretly racist and would love to use the “n-word” if allowed to speak freely. He thinks that calls to end Black Lives Matter and NFL protests are racist. He also thinks that slavery has made black people victims and that they should be forever able to claim that as a reason why we are not doing well as a collective. Overall, I think the video was good because it will spark some conversation although it was not a well-balanced representation of what both sides actually are. But maybe that will be revealed through real conversation rather than this music video and song which were not.

That was exactly the point. To show the story on both sides and to make the point that neither one is the truth. The video is designed to show Modern day America, with two sides. "Living in the same building but split into two floors." And that if we sat down, connected, and actually talked about it we would be able to grow together. If you completely agree with one of the sides, you missed the point of the video.

A lot of people are missing the point of the song. It’s not about who’s right or who’s wrong, but instead realize that there are different perspectives to the same story. You got to be able to still acknowledge the other perspective without immediately disregarding it as not true. In order for us to better understand each other we have to be open and actually try to comprehend both sides, otherwise we’ll never bridge the large gap between our cultures. So please try not only look at one side of the video, there is no right or wrong, only 2 different points of view.

The point of this song was to show that both “sides” are right in some ways and both “sides” are wrong on others. Not blacks against whites or whites against blacks. This song shows us that we both need to look at our views and realize that it’s not a matter of one side of having the real answers, it’s we need to work together on fixing this divide. Both sides need to acknowledge that we may be right on one topic or another but we both need to change out ways and understand each other to fix this.

Did you watch the ending of his video? This song was made by a black guy. The white man's verse is what the stereotypical black man thinks white people think about black people, did you understand that? This video was basically black based, it was trying to show racism from the white man and then the black man firing back, and Anthony said all of it.

I am a Native American and Blood Card carrying member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. If you want to talk about the Oppression Olympics, then we win that Gold Medal hands down! Native Americans have the highest rate of poverty out of any minority race. Native Americans have the highest rate of alcoholism among minority youths. Native Americas have a child abuse rate that is TWICE as high as the national average. LOOK IT UP! We know our history and we can never forget the genocide, broken promises and abuse we've experienced under the rule of a tyrannical US government. BUT...times have changed, and there is a difference between knowing your history and letting it rule over you. My father CHOSE to leave the Indian Reservation and that life behind. He got an education and started his own business which has grown to be worth millions today. BLACK PEOPLE: Did the Trail of Tears stop my father from educating himself? Did Wounded Knee hold him back from building a successful business from the ground up? Will any of the other hundreds of genocidal massacres or past unfair treatment of our people stop me from doing the same? None of us have any control over our family history, but you MUST take responsibility for your OWN future.

@SequenceBreaker64
@SequenceBreaker64 6 жыл бұрын
The unrealism was on purpose. He wanted to show how stupid it is to constantly go on and on about race. He purposefully picked the extremes of each side, instead of an actual down the middle or average. The small bias (and its an extremely small bias for the current times towards the black individual) is probably simply because that's what Joyner Lucas was raised around. The music video was genius because it managed to present valid points for both sides in a way that wouldn't spark hate. He still slid in tons of stuff that both sides need to work on in respective communities. The only reason the video went the way it did and it seems there is some bias and unfairness is that the black individual went second. But if the white person went second then 80% of the target hip-hop audience would've been upset. You have to remember, this is written for the hip-hop and internet community. which at times are the most far left and far right groups respectively. It wasn't written to appease more down the middle political viewers. It was written to try and show how stupid far-right and far-left race opinions are and to bridge the communication gap between the unreasonable far-right and absurd far-left.

The whole point is that both sides have their biases and racist tendencies. There are realities that exist within both black and white cultures that breeds hatred and both sides perpetuate this cycle that continue to exist today. The people in this comment section claiming that this man isn't a "real black man" are literally enabling this attitude that exists in our culture.(not white or black culture but OUR culture...as Americans) Yes white racists are coming out of the woodwork in recent years, but to combat that with further hate of your own will NOT solve anything. Take a look at how men like MLK jr handled things peacefully in the face of over oppression. It takes real courage to combat something with love and peace. Cowards (white or black) lash out with rage and misunderstanding.

When I heard you describe black culture, that’s when I knew you live in a different reality than me. I’m conservative too but the negative critiques you gave the black section of the video is really telling. There are many things wrong within the black community and there are also positive things within the black community, but your commentary just highlights stereotypes and affirms white people to think it’s okay to think about us the way they do. Black people are diverse and can look “crazy” like you described this dude and not fit into stereotypes.

Nathaniel Otu That’s what an opinion is. Wouldn’t you say that you’re absolutely convinced about your perspective? Even if he said that, he still asked you about your perspective. That’s what a healthy debate is. You’re both convinced about your side, you give your points to defend your side, and given all of the information, if both of you can’t come to a conclusion, you agree to disagree. You’re gonna run into a lot of people that are not convinced of your side, but still initiate a conversation, if you say, “well your not convinced of anything, so there’s no point in me saying anything” it defeats the purpose of said conversation. If you stick with the attitude that you have right now, you’re gonna miss out on so many great conversations that can open up someone else’s mind, and in turn maybe open your’s too. Say your piece, and also listen to others too. That’s also needed for a healthy discussion. Plus you can’t base your discussion on feelings, but personal experiences and experiences that you have researched yourself.

The stereo types in the song is refering to some of the poor inner city African American community but forget to point out that statisticlly there are a lot more White American poverty stricken folks on welfare in America than in the African American communities. They simpily like to highlight the countries African American communities and say that they are the problem while provoking more racial controversy.

I have to agree there are more white people on welfare but you got to look at it from a numbers standpoint if you want to talk statistics. As a majority there are a lot more white people then black people so yeah there will be more % wise on welfare. But if you was to do say 100/100 what’s the percent going to be? I love what this song is saying and I agree with a lot of points. You need to stand for your country or get out. You are NOT forced to sell drugs to make a living. And have never been a slave and hopefully none of us ever will be. This is America. Everyone is granted the same opportunity. Wether or not you wanna grab it and run with it or let it go on by is up to you. Yes. It is easier for some people to succeed then others but that goes for every race. I’m white and work my ass but but there are hundreds of thousands of black people that have more money and more successful then I am. I am very happy for them. The ending of this is so true. Politics really do divide us and as a young black male, there were many things I’d didn’t agree with from the commentator’s point of view. I made heavy assumptions during the entire video, but I see it from both sides as well and that there are many things wrong in the black community. They do need to change, but that won’t happen without multi-color support. If race didn’t disconnect people, things would turn out much easier and much better for multiple people.

If you watched his genius video, it makes it seem that his message was not that both sides had good and bad points, but that there are many white people who deny racism with points that can be proven wrong. I thought that was the original message as well, but in a second viewing, it seems that he wanted to portray and stereotypical right leaning white male, and then show what is wrong with that way of thinking with a stereotypical left leaning black male. Which kind of ruined my "both sides need to be heard" moral.

People can take away what they want from this video, at the end of the day there shouldn't be such a great divide in cultures. I don't hate black people I don't hate white people and I don't hate any other culture. I hate people that piss me off or try and hurt me but those one or two people don't represent the majority. At the end of the day we all people. We all have our opinions and our reasons for that opinion. I can't vote because I'm 16 and I don't feel that people should get shit on so hard for who they vote for. We are all people who want to lead our own lives. It seems like they did take sides; well to me at least. They shook their heads and grimaced in disagreement with one side, and shook their heads and smiled in agreement without explanation. This person gave explanations.

Clubberlang the main idea of my comment on this video is that every one that i watched reacting to this video did not understand both sides. i agree with with everything that the black dude said but not the part that he said " I have to sell drugs and put food in my... " u don't have to sell drugs to make money. there is a lot of jobs that a person could work else than sell drugs. i know that the white people has made it hard on the black people to find jobs because most of the bosses in a lot of jobs are white and some of them are racist. but still he can try finding a job even minimum wage until he finds a real job.

You can see a perfect example of the issue with identity politics by looking at the comments of this video and seeing how other black people are calling this man an Uncle Tom, traitor, white etc all because he has an opinion that they don’t agree with. Close minded people are the ones creating the most division in this country.

Grumpy, there's acknowledging issues within your race's culture, and then there's claiming there's nothing positive to be said about the black community. @12:25 "What is 'black culture'? Is it the slang? Is it behaving like a criminal? What is 'black culture'? You tell me, because as far as what I see people talk about 'black culture' is always something negative; there's never anything real positive. Why can't 'black culture' be inventing? Progressing? Building? Why does it gotta be about just how you behave and the behavior's, like, anti-social? Why does that gotta be 'black culture'? Why can't 'American culture' be 'black culture'?" There are many, many black inventors, activists, writers, innovators, artists, etc. To the best of my understanding the black community embraces people like Oprah, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. just as much as they embrace Tupac, Biggie, etc. but the one month a year that the rest of us are supposed to take to learn about those people and embrace them, instead people have to have their panties in a twist and cause a huge fuss because there's no "white history month" and stupid shit like that is what keeps the division going.

Valith West He never said there's nothing positive to be said about black culture. What he said, and what you quoted him as saying is that everytime he hears someone talk about black culture it's always something negative. Also, since you mentioned it, it is completely ridiculous to embrace Tupac and Biggie as much as those other people you mentioned. On the topic of black history month, in my opinion, it being a thing only adds to the thinking of non-blacks as blacks being "the other" or separate from everyone else, which only works to increase the racial divide, which isn't nearly as bad as the left make it out to be by the way. Rather than having a black history month, why not educate kids more about black history in school, and do it the same way we're taught about other things rather than making it separate and giving the topic special treatment. Black people are always being talked about in the media like they're helpless victims of some kind of invisible oppressive force, which seems incredibly patronizing to me. Many famous black people, including Morgan Freeman, have been saying this for years.

Grumpy Whoo boy, buckle up your seatbelt for this one. I'm sorry, I didn't intend for this to be so long-winded, but I tried to touch on your points as best as I could (I'm realizing that I didn't touch on a few things i.e. teaching black history year round (Spoiler: they do)) and I hope that you'll hang in there and hear me out. I'll happily do the same in return. There must be difference of interpretation in this case, because what I see is someone who is making a claim that black culture doesn't embrace innovation, progression, etc. (Why can't black culture be inventing? Progressing? Building?) but is only known for using ebonics (which is perceived to indicate a lack of education) and being criminal (Is it the slang? Is it behaving like a criminal?). I never said that those people shouldn't be embraced more, I was just making a statement that there are many notable, positive, influential figures in black culture and they are not regarded as being any less important than Tupac (as the rap mentions) and Biggie. To the best of my understanding, and I welcome anyone to correct me if I'm wrong, the reason that people like Tupac and Biggie are more prevalent is because for most they're more relatable. The fact of the matter is that not everyone is going to be as renowned and impactful as MLK, and that goes for people of every race, not just the black community. If everyone were an influencer, there'd be no one left to influence. We see the same in the white community, too - Most aren't trying to be the next Walt Whitman, Susan B Anthony, or Bill Gates. They worship people like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and the Kardashians. Here's the thing about Black History Month - There's absolutely nothing wrong with celebrating differences and the people who have dedicated their lives to bettering the lives of others, but the fact of the matter is that white Americans haven't had to overcome the same obstacles as black, hispanic, native and asian Americans, who are STILL seen and treated as less-than. I mean honestly, there are still TONS of white Americans who try to justify colonization and slavery, assume that basically every hispanic person is here because somewhere, someone in their family illegally hopped the border, etc. When it comes down to it, we are different - We come from different backgrounds, different cultures, have different eyes, hair, and skin... What's wrong with celebrating those differences or the people who have worked so hard to try and bring about acceptance of that culture in the melting pot of America? That's the problem with ABL asking "Why can't American culture be black culture?" Because what he considers to be 'American culture' appears to be 'Christian conservative white culture', but there are so many other cultures here in America and embracing those doesn't make anyone any less American. (Unless you're a domestic terrorist or something, obviously.) "Black people are always talked about in the media..." why not find out for yourself? Ask around, learn people's stories, ask them what they've been through, and share your experiences as well. I promise you that I don't fall in line with how the media portrays white liberal agnostic women, and I doubt that you fall in line with however the media portrays whatever group you most closely identify with, either. For the sake of this point, I'm going to assume that you're a conservative christian straight white man (and I could be so very wrong, but please bear with me on this and/or feel free to state otherwise). Are you racist? Are you a white nationalist? Are you picketing Planned Parenthood, refusing service to people based on sexual orientation, and telling your wife to get back in the kitchen and make you a sandwich? Probably not. Media relies on views, and to get views they sensationalize things and talk about topics in a way that's going to engage you so that you keep watching. There is a lot of evidence to show that members of the black community have to work twice as hard to get half as far as white people, and I invite you to be open-minded and take a look at things from the other side. Google points that would support the opposite of your argument, and see what their sources have to say. Or at the very least, don't hold a double-standard, because we both know that white people make up just as many excuses for their shortcomings and get away with it. "I can't get a job because of affirmative action", "because the mexicans are taking them", "because these goddamn liberals", etc. etc. Everyone plays the blame game. Some just get away with it.
