This series has me pondering doing the same swap on my Yukon. Gas costs are killing me
@NotSoGrandGarage Жыл бұрын
It was a fun build for sure. It's been swapped for 10 years or better now. If you go through with it, plan on quite a bit of fabrication... and for the price, it would probably be cheaper to go with a 12 valve and use a dodge transmission (built accordingly).

I'm having slight coking problems as well. When I switch it back to diesel and run it hard for a few days it quits white smoking and runs good. Haven't messed with timing yet. Might be injectors. Adjusting smoke screw out helped a little. 93 12v
@NotSoGrandGarage Жыл бұрын
So far, I'm liking the results of the spacer. The power band difference is worth it in itself and it cut down on smoke on diesel so we'll see. I haven't put many miles on it yet on oil yet so I'm going to give it a couple weeks before I call it and swap in the new injectors.
@christiancrowe8996 Жыл бұрын
@@NotSoGrandGarage I'm going to mess with my timing a bit and see if that helps. The truck has 420k miles on it. Who knows how long those injectors have been in there haha
@NotSoGrandGarage Жыл бұрын
If timing is stock, I'd consider the spacer. It will bump static timing a bit and gives you a much broader torque curve. Its about as difficult to install as it is to twist the pump but I think it gives better results. Mine was bumped 1/8" at the pump flange over stock and was still having issues.
@christiancrowe8996 Жыл бұрын
@@NotSoGrandGarage the pump was replaced before I got it so who knows where it's at. Definitely seems like it should have more power so maybe it's off a little anyway

I replaced the injection pump in my 7.3 IDI, before a ferret meter I’d order had arrived. Drove to and from work for several days, and she made white smoke and EGT never got over 700. When my meter arrived and I verified injection timing I realized it was at 13 degrees BTDC!!! I adjusted timing back to 9 degrees BTDC (OEM spec is 8.5 BTDC) and the white smoke disappeared, with EGTs rising faster and capable of the danger zone. Thought I’d share, I definitely learned from the experience
@no-damn-alias Жыл бұрын
It should also smoke way less in higher rpm and potentially use less fuel
@NotSoGrandGarage Жыл бұрын
So far... all of the above.
@no-damn-alias Жыл бұрын
earlier injection will always create less smoke BUT not always lower fuel consumption. Too early injection is bad as it ignite to early and the piston has to overcome too much pressure to pass top dead center and also on the way down there's already less pressure. Trial and error will tell you where the lowest consumption is for your style of driving as on mechanical rotary pumps with centrifugal injection timing adjustment. That's where an electronic pump has an advantage.
@NotSoGrandGarage Жыл бұрын
@@no-damn-alias For sure. If I were leaving injectors stock, I'd probably back down my static timing a bit as right now, it's sitting just over 1/8" advanced at the pump flange.. + the spacer. It's a bit much and could come down a bit but the larger injectors I'm putting in it soon will retard dynamic timing a bit. Going to wait until they are in before really tuning it in. As for the electronic pumps and such... you are again correct. My mind has been changed in the last year on newer engines and black diesel. I've seen and dealt with plenty of people who are having good luck with common rail engines and such. The more precise control over the injection event and overall fuel metering is a BIG advantage. The only downside is cost of replacement parts if something goes wrong.
