Hey Frankie, how's your Cantonese coming along? If you want to be on the more serious side of learning or improving your Cantonese through films; I would strongly recommend that you watch ANY of the movies or filmworks directed or produced by Wai Ka-Fai (韋家輝). Ask ANYBODY who has lived in Hong Kong for at least 20+ years, and they will certainly know who Wai Ka-Fai is. I would compare him to very famous American directors like Oliver Stone or Sam Peckinpah; people who grew up in times of GREAT social distress, filled with all sorts of conflicts and turmoil... Things they have witnessed happen like WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, ect. 死人, 冧樓, 撞機, 沉船, 炒車... Just lots and lots of people in trouble or dying everywhere! With exposure to all kinds of '蘇州屎' (Suzhou Shit) like that, it would surely have heavily influenced the themes in their movies and films. There is an old TVB drama called '義不容情 Looking Back in Anger (1989)'. It is very old, but it's still VERY POPULAR and many Cantonese-speaking people know about it. It's one of the most watched TVB series by Chinese people in Hong Kong and around the world. It reflects upon the old pre-1997 culture and society of Hong Kong and its people; involving events, situations, social interactions, and pop-culture references that simply CANNOT be recreated in modern times today. You can learn quite a bit about authentic Hong Kong history and culture from that show. There are some very intense moments and bloody feuds/conflicts with the characters involved. Trust me, you will want to pull your hair out after you watch it! This is because of the vast amount of 社會見識 (social knowledge) that you will gain after watching it, and not just from learning Cantonese. Trust me, you will learn ALOT. I first saw it on VCD format like many years ago, from a friend who used to run a videostore in New York Chinatown. Back then, it was only available in Cantonese/Manadarin audio with traditional Chinese subtitles. I had ZERO knowledge of Chinese back then, but my friends FORCED me to watch it because they said it will help me learn more about Chinese culture. It took me a LONG TIME, like FOREVER to finally figure out what the hell they were saying, but I eventually figured it out after watching it over and over again like multiple times over the years. With 50 episodes, it was ALOT to take in and digest for a non-Cantonese speaker! And coming from a fellow Italian-American who also grew up in New York, I am quite proud to have watched it myself during my own lifetime. You can probably find the episodes here somewhere on KZbin, so be sure to check it out!

I think the reason so many people have such a hard time believing that June is Chinese is because his English is so perfect. I think more people should compliment him on his English, considering Chinese is a mother tongue for him. I would never guess that he wasn't actually from New York originally. I have a useless BA in French, studied French for nine years starting at age twelve years in the States, before finishing my last year at a French university. Only after living in France for four months or so, did I truly attain anything akin to fluency. Frankie is a true genius in every sense of the word. Im struggling between learning Japanese or Mandarin...but mannn between these vids and Laoshu's (RIP Moses - still feels weird to say) its hard not to study Mandarin first especially seeing how I live in the Northeast and rarely meet Japanese folks😩🙌🏾

The durag does NOTHING to make you look more hood. bwhahahha just be yourself. The hood would still love you. PS: Downtown BK is crazy gentrified. You gotta go to Bed-Stuy to get the close enough real Chinese people in the store. Continue to stay light, feel light, and be light!!!

Frankie you're my favorite linguist after XiaomanNYC. You're the bomb, keep it up. ❤❤❤ And I'm editing this to tell your Blasian friend he's the bomb too. I hope that's not insulting, because I intended that to be the highest of compliments. Love you both. Last edit what is the difference between stinky tofu and mofitofu or whatever that gal said?

My son calls himself Blasian. He feels it's an accurate description. He is still young and can't speak for all biracial Asians but I'm saying as long as they're individuals first they may not mind that description.

@@booklover_78 thank you for clarifying that. My own children are blond and blue, with their paternal great-grandfather being Japanese. My ex-husband was a quarter Japanese, carried down the male line, so he and they retained their ancestors' family name. He was born over here in the 1920s, but was the child of an arranged Japanese marriage of some kind. Their family lost everything in WWII after being shipped off to the Poston, AZ camp once the government availed itself of their great-great- grandparents' successful business. I always thought it was so cool my children and I had such an awesome Japanese name. I thank God though, that we never endured that kind of suffering. During those hard years, it was hard to be Japanese American. Heartbreakingly so. With regard to your mix raced child however, I can only imagine that he is beautiful. Personally, I find most Afro-Asians to be stunning. The best of both worlds, truly. Blessings to you and your family! If any of this doesn't make sense or rambles, please forgive me, I had my left knee replaced today and I'm trying to keep.myself disconnected from pain by talking, but I'm nowhere near 100%. I really appreciate your comments, as it's easy to have what is meant to be a compliment misunderstood, and I never wish to make someone feel uncomfortable because of their race. I love learning about cultures and people the world over. God bless u and your family! ❤️❤️❤️

@@mamacitabella1759you're absolutely welcome. I can understand that. It tough out there. That's the least offensive thing I've heard. ❤ My children are actually part Japanese as well. They are through their father's mother, their obachan's side. Their hii-obaasan met their great grandpa when he was stationed in Nagasaki during WWII. My son almost had a Japanese middle name but his dad wasn't for it, unfortunately. I pray for you a speedy recovery from surgery. I hope all goes well.

@@booklover_78 @booklover_78 My kids have many first cousins, as their grandparents had six kids and now all them have had children as well. All are descended from the same great-grandfather, whose son (their grandpa) passed a few months ago unfortunately. We all lived, our family and all my ex's siblings and their families, very close together, in about three different towns spanning two counties. These beautiful cousins all share Japanese and white ancestry, and now this newest generation boasts the additions of cousins mixed with African American and Mexican American too. We have absolutely beautiful pictures of huge family gatherings. I still consider them family. I love the Japanese American naming customs and wanted to name my first daughter with the middle name Miyoshi but went with a Russian religious name instead, in a tradition from my own family and one of my sisters in particular. The kids gave a first cousin with the name Kimiko as well. God bless you and all of them ur children and their futures! Shalom, dear friend.
