A police official in Ohio pulled over a man for not signaling 100 feet ahead of a turn. John Felton, a black man, says the officers followed him for a long time before pulling him over. The cop admitted that he followed Felton initially because he had made direct eye contact with the officer. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick!?), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
What do you think the real reason he was pulled over for? What was the dumbest reason you were pulled over? Let us know in the comments below.
Read more here: gawker.com/ohio...
“Former Ohio resident John Felton was pulled over by Dayton police in front of his mom’s house after he allegedly activated his turn signal less than 100 feet before making a right turn. Unable to believe an officer would stop him on such a piddling technicality, Felton asked the officer why he was really followed for several blocks and eventually pulled over.
“Because you made direct eye contact with me and held onto it when I was passing you,” the officer responded.
When Felton attempted to protest, the officer told him to end the discussion or face a citation for the not-quite-missed turn signal.”

Happen to me. I had NY plates in Texas with a not so nice car though. The cop was latino and I starred at him because I had to since his car was stop partially in the rode perpendicular to my car. So I was worried he may cut me off. He's by the intersection and I'm driving slow since he may cut me off and I stop at the red light in front of him. He then drives behind me and waits about 8 seconds before putting his siren on. I'm at the red light of the same intersection his car was always waiting at. I ask him what did he pull me over for? He says speeding I repeat in a I don't believe this way "Speeding". He says "I caught you all the way down there". He look stupid after I come up clean when he runs my plates. I fight the ticket and it gets dismissed since he doesn't show up in court.

I worked at the court for 4 years in the State of Indiana & I learn that we can bargain the ticket in court with the judge. I have gone back to the last place i got a ticket because there was a bush blocking my view then i took several pictures then i show them to the judge & my ticket was dismiss. The ticket was because the front wheels were on top of the white line & I even told the cop i stop on the top of the white line because the bushes are blocking my view. & the cop told me I don't care & i sayed ok we will leave it to the judge...

I've had it done to me I was pulled over for going too slow after a cop was following me for 10 minutes… cop lied and said I was going 40 km in a 60 zone I was doing 50, but I didn't have the patience to argue with some piece of shit pig. Another time I slowed down cuz I saw a pig sniffing something through his window when he was parked on a side road. That pig followed me for ten minutes also he even went into the McDonald's drive through I was in lol what a dirty mud loving stinky ass greasy swine.

+blaze12771 . The driver looked very similar to that Virginia shooter, so no wonder the cop pulled him over for a routine check. The awkward conversation about a turn light or an eye contact is actually a one of the standard procedures to examine the suspect reaction and sanity. As we could see obviously the driver showed some angry attitude toward the Officer, normal person wouldn't have.

Fortunately, it's legal to tint your back windows pitch black. Look up the law in your state first, but from what I've read as long as the front windows are more than 35% and the windshield is clear, you are within the law. As far as visibility from the outside in, it's no different than a cargo van.

+Derek Ryder Are you sure we watched the same video, dude? The guy didn't give the offer any "attitude," he was justifiably frustrated after getting pulled aside for no reason. He also went out of his way to say he meant no disrespect. So no, he DIDN'T escalate things, that was a very appropriate reaction. Also, and I don't think you're getting this part, officers of the law are supposed to take the HIGH road, not write up citations over petty things like this. If an officer of the law lets his or her emotions get the best of them, then they have failed to do their job properly.

I am black and this happened to me once. I live in Canada. I was driving with my bro in a BMW and as we turned the intersection, my bro noticed a squad car waiting at the gas station, and made eye contact with the cops. As soon as they saw us, you can't believe these cops drove over the sidewalk onto the main road just to run our plates. They realized we had insurance and drove past us real fast, as if they were angry they couldn't arrest some blacks that day. Seems this is a general cop issue in North America.

@NathanaelFaunce 9 жыл бұрын
+mIchaela burton "Ticket quotas" don't work the way non-cops think they do. No way this officer was going to write this ticket. If he shows up in court, he's gotta prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he signaled 99 feet prior to an intersection and not 100 feet. He saw a vehicle that struck him as suspicious, and found a reason to stop and have a conversation with him and make sure he's not a wanted murder/drunk driver/drug dealer.

+NathanaelFaunce Thats simply bullshit. Explain to me what was supposed to be suspicious about the driver or his car? Plus if that was the real reason, why follow him for so long and then use some flimsy bullshit about not signaling at the proper 100 feet? Also the main motivation of this stop wasn't the bullshit about the turn signal, he was young, black, had a nice car and the cop figured he had to be involved in some kinda illegal activity and would use any reason to justify pulling him over so he could search his car and person. You have to be incredibly naive to think a cop really has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt he didn't signal at the proper time. Explain to me all of the cops who killed unarmed people, gave flimsy and conflicting stories and still got away with it. A black man was convicted of a weapons possession and he's medically incapable of using his arms and the weapon that he used was never found. Open your eyes man.

One of the things most people don't "get' is that they don't know what its like to be under the absolute Authority of another human being. A human being who can beat you, if he chooses, and you are legally prohibited from defending yourself. A human being who could kill you and probably get away with it.I don't care how badass you think you are, its a terrifying feeling. It also kinda crushes that "Land of the Free" façade that comes with being a middle-class white guy. I've only been in that situation a few times; I cannot imagine THAT as an every-day reality.

Happened to me once. Cop was on left lane I was on the right. Stopped at a red light, he made eye contact, I returned it. Light turns green, he immediately got behind me, trailed me for 2 more lights then pulled me over. His reason: the month tag on my lic plate was faded and difficult to see. It wasn't. Spent about 10 minutes looking me up on his computer then a second cop came. Second cop came over and asked me to step out of the car. Repeatedly asked him why that was necessary, he refused to answer me. Finally he tells me they found something on my record and first cop needed to talk to me about it. Said he could talk to me about it while being inside my car. He disagreed and made me get out the car. Leaned on my door with my arms crossed obviously upset and he told me to put my hands down for his safety. He saw I had nothing on me when I got out but his reason was I could be hiding a gun in my armpit. Yeah. I put my hands down then he says nvm I need you to sit on the curb and put your hands behind your back. Asked repeatedly if he was arresting me, again he wouldn't answer until he said if you don't sit down and put your hands behind your back then I will. He "gently" coaxed me to sit down by placing his hand over my collar bone area and "nudging" me to sit down. Several minutes later first cop comes and in a very upset voice asks about the warrant out for my arrest in Bakersfield. Shocked, I told him there's no such thing. He repeated that according to his computer I had a warrant out in Bakersfield. It matched my description exactly he said. Asked if it also matched my name and DOB and again he dodged the question and said it matched my description exactly. Male, 5'11", brown hair and brown eyes. 170lbs I asked. Yes he said. Told him I'm 6'1". Moment of silence. Before he began to talk I interrupted him and asked it was my name, address, and description he again repeated that it matched my description exactly. As if there couldn't be any other males with brown eyes/hair 6'1" elsewhere in CA. Told him I've never been to Bakersfield. After several moments of deliberating with the other officer he came back, pointed at my face and said I better not be lying to him and "strongly suggested" I get the warrant taken care of. I work for a background screening company, each year I must do an annual background check and last one came back spotless. Mentioned that to the cop and he said "yeah sure, whatever" At this point he knew that I knew he was fos so I politely asked how to take care of my "warrant" situation and he said "you can hop on a computer I assume, figure it out." Thank you I said. They let me go without a citation for my "faded month tag" or even for my "warrant." As he was walking back to his patrol car I asked for the officers name, he hesitated and said "Mike" (probably a fake name) when I asked for his last name he said his first name was all I needed to know then he got in his car and closed the door. Next day at work I had my employer re-do my background check and surprise, nothing. Moral of the story: I felt protected and served as fuck! Thank you officers.

I have gotten a ticket for, "driving in such a manner to cause agrivation on a road(i.e. someone honked once)," I have been pulled over Walking on 4 occasions. One time I was stopped out side my house and accused of being a guy how ran from the cops with a shot gun I don't even own a gun. I get followed by cops on the regular. I have had cops pull the tazer when I was asking to call my lawyer. I have been arested on minor traffic stops several times, and I am not black. So I have to think that this is a Class thing. The case overturned a manslaughter conviction, ruling that the convicted defendant had been protecting himself from the illegal use of force by a police officer. It is widely quoted on the internet, under the theory that it gives citizens the right to resist an unlawful arrest by force, including deadly force.

Wow, I'm surprised the cop tells him why he ACTUALLY pulled him over, making eye contact. The cops superiors need to see this video. He made this stop to see if he could see something illegal in plain view while he was up beside the guys window.

This happened quite some time ago, so things may have changed. I am a white man from a fairly affluent family. I was in college and for a couple of reasons, I had my family's Rolls Royce Silver Shadow at school for a while. it was a Friday or Saturday night and I and several friends had been out drinking. We were pulled over- expired inspection sticker, I think. At any rate, the cop didn't even come up to the window - he stood at the pillar, asked the usual questions about driver's license - registration, etc. He then said essentially, 'renew your inspection' and let us go. What if I had been black?

My mother owns a nice Mercedes, a female cop pulled us over at 10 at night when I was 8! Her only reason was because she said she needed to run our plates. She took 45 minutes on purpose. There was another time when my mom was ALONE on the highway a cop got really close to her and it scared her so she switched lanes and the dumb cop gave her a ticket for not putting her signal on. :/

I've been pulled over for this exact same thing. I had filed a suit against the county, and was harassed every time the cops saw me.
