No musical genre has a stronger association with Nazism than black metal. However, black metal is by no means a musical extension of Nazism. In this video, I look at how that association came to be, how to spot bands with such ties, and how to engage with the genre around it.

It's never getting old. It was an endless discussion in the 90s and every decade after. Black Metal always was highly influenced by Punk since the very beginning and bands like Venom even had songs like Metal Punk or Long Haired Punks and so on. If there wouldn't had been a growing "we don't care, we're against everything" mentality in Black Metal, things would had been running differently.

Oh so you're just being deliberately dense. Yes, I did say that, but I thought the caveat that that doesn't apply if you're trying to show people how to identify NSBM bands so that they can avoid them was so obvious that I didn't have to say it out loud. What you're saying is on par with claiming that a guide on how to survive a mass shooting is just showing people how to commit mass shootings.

11:11 Something that should be said about Deathspell Omega is that 1) Aspa is not a "member", he is more akin to a session musician as he has no real impact on the music itself and purely provides vocals 2) the two most recent DsO albums have included critiques of fascism, The Furnaces of Palingenesia being entirely about how awful fascism is, driving a lot of influence from the philosopher Georges Bataille who was also anti-fascist
@leliel4910
@leliel4910 10 күн бұрын
Calling Aspa a session musician instead of an official member is just semantics, if he wasn't important to the band, he wouldn't have been kept on for 22 years. And I'm familiar with the lyrical themes of The Furnaces of Palingenesia, and I've even read interviews with the other members where they claim they're leftists, and that's all well and good, but they're still collaborating with an active Nazi. It would be one thing if Aspa were just some idle basement dweller, but he actively platforms overtly Nazi bands and even distributes Nazi literature. Now, all that being said, I can understand wanting to continue listening to Deathspell Omega, they have a pretty unique, and compelling, sound and aesthetic. But I think feeling comfortable doing so by claiming that they aren't sketchy is lying to yourself.
@LuciferianStrings
@LuciferianStrings 9 күн бұрын
@@leliel4910 there's no proof he's been kept on for 22 years, he was listed on the credits of one project, assumed to be in others but no definitive proof exists. Also the band members themselves said he wasnt part of the core circle that actually makes creative decisions about the music, if i was a nazi and a full member of a band why would i both accept and provide voice to politics totally opposite to mine in such band? Metallum lists the same 3 members on all records since Infernal Battles but there are other members brought on that arent listed as well as not even actually having confirmation of any of this. Criticizing Deathspell omega for collaborating with a nazi is totally valid but calling DsO an NSBM adjacent band is just not correct
@leliel4910
@leliel4910 6 күн бұрын
Metallum is almost always right about these sorts of things. In fact, they specify that "...it is almost universally accepted as fact that he [Aspa] indeed is [a continued part of Deathspell Omega], due to the presence of his distinct vocal style..." If they are indeed right, I think you can call Deathspell Omega an NSBM-adjacent band, as they share a member with (i.e. are adjacent to) an outright NSBM band (Clandestine Blaze). Now, if they are actually wrong, then you're correct, Deathspell Omega was just sketchy in the past. But, if that's the case, they really need to come out and explicitly say that Aspa is no longer affiliated with them. I know one of the core facets of the band is anonymity, but it wouldn't really be breaking that saying someone is *not* a member.
@LuciferianStrings
@LuciferianStrings 5 күн бұрын
@@leliel4910 if mikko is a constant (not confirmed, and even by what you've said yourself just speculation since you're going off only similarity in vocals in the records) he does sound different from record to record and must also know like 4 languages cause he has parts in english, french and latin on top of his finnish mother tongue. Would aspa, a finnish man speak french with such eloquence for almost entire songs? why would an admited nazi provide vocals for 2 records with explicit critiques of his ideology? also vocal style isnt that difficult to emulate if you're experienced and technically proficient. Even in DsO records before any hint of Aspa there are vocal parts that are very similar to records after him. The simple fact is that we dont know and metallum's info is limited, it is a known fact that there are more than 3 collaborators including multiple vocalists in the same records yet they arent listed which goes to show they arent all knowing and infallible but What is more likely? Aspa being in active in 13 bands while also running a label (according to metallum, only counting currently active ones), being fluent in 3+ languages, accepting to provide vocals for 2 records directly opposed to his worldview, all while having a consistent 20 year streak with a DsO or They managed to get a guy that sounds like him You simply cannot know in which records he is truly present but even if he were a constant he is still not granted rank of "member" by the core band members as they themselves have said in interviews, being a member implies control and input for the band which aspa doesnt have, he provided vocals and nothing more according to the band. i would not consider a glorified session musician a member of a band.

Fash in the scene help each other out. They go on each other's labels and distros, create art or merch, play on each other's festivals and engage in general platforming. All while the cleaner looking bands like mgla who want to make money can say "we're not political". Their popularity channels enough fans to outright NSBM bands to make it viable.

So, guys, here we are. We are not allowed to write songs about history, heritage and folklore anymore because our bands will be considered "unsafe" in such a humble, loving, positive and bright genre as black metal. On the serious note tho, I don't give a flying fuck about the lyrics as long as there are kicking riffs. However, so far I've found many good black metal bands associated with NS or "sketchy" themes, as modern pro-communists from countries that have never experienced communism, would say, but I've not found a good RABM band. Not a single one. No, I won't try Panopticon, Dawn Ray'd or Sorgsvart. All of this shit sucks. On the other hand, these bands' music just cannot be compared to the best releases of acts like Absurd, Goatmoon, Stahlfront, Totenburg, Nokturnal Mortum or Nordglanz. You can try to come up with whatever you want but the sad (for you) fact is that there are better musicians in the so-called "nazi" bands than the so-called "communist" bands in black metal. Are there better bands with non-political lyrics in the regular black metal? Yes, Dissection's music is unsurpassed till this very day and it is better than ANY political band's music. But that's not the point here. The sole fact that there are people today who research if a black metal band has provocative lyrics and use terms like "safe", "questionable", "sketchy" and stuff like that, makes the whole picture very pathetic. Why would you even bother with listening to black metal in general if you are afraid that you will be butt hurt by the lyrics? From all of the sub-genres of metal and music genres in general, you have decided to listen to the one which has the highest risk of containing bands whose lyrics will be inappropriate to you. I don't get that, really.

There is no "problem" because no real Nazism would ever be allowed to exist again in society. It's easy to see a problem when you sit on your auto-domesticated arse in some globalist country focusing on a small little niche microgenre within a genre (and many of the bands don't even call themselves NSBM, that was the lame "fans"), and not the real existing corrupted forces greater in the world than "Nazism" being expressed by artsy farts.

There is also a "ship of theseus" thing going on (how many original members are still left?) - of course new members could be just as NS-leaning as the old ones, but it's hard to say that since they don't really have time to posture politically right now. What I wrote sounds like a bit of a cope, and trying to white-wash them (oh the irony), but that's not even the worst thing I'm willing to accept as a "moral cost" just to see RU lose. t. left-leaning Polish guy

Sorry but saying black metal has a serious problem with nazi-ism is just wrong. Yes there are far right bands (same as in punk, noise, neo-folk or other genres), but those are a small segment of the vast amount of bands out there in this genre. You may have some questionable bandmembers with other vices, but the Nazi's are just a small segment of them. Also even if a bandmember has far right sentiments in a way, doesn't immediately mean the band itself is NSBM (i.e. directly has pro nazi themes in the lyrics). Burzum for example to again name the elephant in the room. If anything Varg created what would become known as DSBM.

First of all...far right punk bands!? What? :D bonehead Oi is the only subgenre where that's possible but otherwise nooo fucking way. Second, if you are in a band with a nazi, then you must be pretty ok with nazis, cuz you are literally spending 100s of hours with that person not even mentioning what was already said in the video, that they get together with other nazis, collaborate, play shows together etc. Don't gaslight yourself.

You have a very high bar for what constitutes a serious problem then. Punk is a mostly leftist genre, while noise and neofolk are even more niche genres than black metal. And there are no other genres, of which there are over 1,000, that have as big of a proportion of Nazis as black metal does. How many other genres have a dedicated subcategory for bands with national socialist themes? That sounds like a serious problem to me.

As a Gay dude who is a person of color. The BM sound connected with me. Due in part to my frustration with not fitting into the ideologies of Gay culture, and white supremacy from white Gay men. Also just the struggles of religious upbringing internally shaming you and creating self loathing. It was part of why I opened up to anti-abrahamic philosophy. The right wing aspects of it I find rather comical. How can a genre be satanic and yet have so much in common with the christian right. Kind of an Oxymoron.
