After the death of his father, T'Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. Good review . Very interesting points about the end scene in Oakland and the post credit scene at the UN. I think I saw an interview with Ryan Coogler where he states he purposely choose to end in Oakland as to mirror the beginning of the movie where is starts in Oakland. Which I think works well in telling this grand Shakespearean style tale but ending as it started with an intimate moment. The beginning being destructive and the end constructive. Coogler has mentioned before the french movie A Prophet (excellent worth a watch) is one of his favorite films. Which has similar type of connectivity between the beginning and end. Therefore the UN scene, which was needed to conclude the ideas being played out and also to fit in the set up of Infinity War, had to be placed as a post credit.

This one really grew on me. It’s really it’s own movie. I didn’t like Spider-Man much because it didn’t feel like it’s own movie, it felt like a tutorial if that makes sense. But this movie really worked for me., it felt like iron man, captain America, and Thor where the movie doesn’t rely on any other mcu movie!

A damn near perfect (9.9) BP review. I have a minor issue with the first post credit scene. In my opinion, this was Erik Killmonger's journey, and it was appropriate to end where it began - in Oakland. Much respect Sean on the Road to Infinity War.

Awesome series Sean!! I’ve been doing my own MCU rewatch, and after each film, I immediately turn on your review to see what you have to say. I’d say I agree with about 95% of your thoughts, but even the other 5% is so well articulated that I can respect your opinion and see where you’re coming from. Even with Guardians 2, while the mean streak didn’t really bother me too much, you managed to nail why the character-driven story didn’t work quite as well as it did for say an Empire Strikes Back. I also really love your format and rating system. I used to do written reviews myself, but could never figure out how to grade them properly. Two separate ratings is such a simple idea, but it works perfectly and no one seems to think about doing it. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work, and I appreciate that you seem like such a genuine guy who cares about community input, which is something surprisingly hard to come by on here. Going to watch Infinity War on Wednesday, only two days to go, can't wait!!!!!!! And my thoughts on Black Panther: it was surprisingly good! The villain was one of the best ones in the MCU. I also love Ryan Coogler as a director, and another movie by him was amazing to see. It's not like The Dark Knight, since that's something my friend said he heard from quite a few people. Also not the best movie in the MCU, but still a great film :)

My biggest complaint was Kilmonger should have recieved more time, he has one of the best villain motivations ever, and was the perfect foil for the hero. Too bad he was barely in the movie. You roasted the action like crazy though lmao. Great job on this series! You made the months and weeks go by way faster.

The five act structure, is simply a more detailed version of the three act structure. It separates the two parts of act two, which are usually separate anyways, by expanding the explanation of the midpoint climax into its own act. Just wanted to clear that up, they are essentially the same, you could easily explain this movie using he three act structure and it would be much the same as the five act structure.

One of the mixed aspects of the movie for me was the fact that this plot was a little too similar to Thor Ragnarok. Seriously, we got a team consisting of title character, his younger sibling, a woman from a highly esteemed band of warriors, and a friend from work facing off against a long lost heir to the throne (who the title character's father tried to hide the existence of). Not only that but the movie also has a climatic battle that features a group of previously established people coming in almost unexpectedly to help out, and the movie ends with the title character's decision to reveal/bring his people to Earth. Yeah the movies are very different in how they play these elements but just the fact that two movies with such similar plots were premiered so close too each other is a little off putting.

That comment about T’Challa being bland was my main problem with this movie, I just couldn’t explain it very well. He was my favourite character in Civil War, likely because he was just a total badass who was scary even to Winter Soldier, which was cool. In his own movie he seemed quite generic at times.

What a change of pace. Contrasting with, basically all of 2017 marvel, Black Panther starts of the year strong. It has some great characters, a good story, and good action. I may not love it as much as other people, but I think it's very good. Some of the Wakandan tribal stuff can be a bit hammy, but overall it works. T'Challa is not as strong I feel in this one as he was in Civil War, and the film I think suffers for it. However the other main character, Killmonger, is just great. I feel this movie and Spider-Man Homecoming have the best Marvel villains along with Loki, prior to seeing Avengers Infinity War. You understand his motivations while at the same time understanding his methods are wrong. Another bad guy that thinks he is good. Black Panther is pretty good, while I am glad it did so well, I don't think it's quality is the same as what it's built up to be. 8.5/10

This is one of my favorites, and years later they've done Wakanda forever and I really liked that one too. I put it at 10th in my ranking, I think it's a bit overrated but not at all bad, it's a slightly above average marvel movie. My biggest problem is with the villain, I know a lot of people thought he was amazing and so did I until he put on a black panther suit as well, terrible way to have to mirror of the main character cliche in this movie and while his motivation and backstory are really cool and unique the costume ruins it for me.

I like Black Panther. It's not my favorite MCU movie, but it's far from the worst. On the positive, the cast is great and the characters are great. Erik Killmonger is my 3rd favorite MCU villain (behind Loki and Vulture, and I haven't seen Infinity War yet). Another Human Torch actor redeemed by the MCU! T'Challa is a good character but the three characters I liked more than him are Killmonger, Shuri, and M'Baku. The biggest negatives I have about the movie is the CGI, and some of the action. A CGI-heavy movie like this is going to have some odd-looking moments, but there were a lot of scenes that looked poor. The action was good (of what could be seen). I loved the car chase scene but the end fight was hard to watch. Two characters dressed in black fighting in a black background with dim lighting. I'm also not a big fan of the kinetic energy-enhanced suit. The movie also wasted Andy Serkis. This is the second time he was introduced as a minor character in a 2015 movie (Age of Ultron and The Force Awakens) expected to have a bigger role in a future movie. He does get more screen time in the next movie from 2017/2018 (The Last Jedi and Black Panther) but is killed off way too soon.

I understand the gripe about "Which scene to use?". I kind of feel what the director said about them choosing Oakland as the end. The announcement of the Wakandan outreach center accomplished the same idea as the announcement. This way, it ends in a similar way that it started in Oakland.. My gripe with it, however, is that they used that footage prominently in the trailers. It's like how they used the money shot from the end of ASM 2 in all of the trailers

I work 3rd shift and get home at 630 every day, and this series has been a fantastic addition to watch every Monday right after work. SUPER HYPED for infinity war, can't see until Saturday so I won't be checking your notifications until then! But as far as black panther - absolutely loved it. I saw it 3 times opening weekend. As for the one thing I didn't like, was that I think there were some times where it felt overpowering with the emphasis for racism. I'm not against that focus, but it became a bit much at times. But that was truly the only thing I didn't totally like. Everything else in the movie I found to be flawless. One of the reasons I loved this one was that it was a similar theme to Captain America: Winter Soldier, which is at this point my second favorite MCU film, and #6 movie of all time (so many shifts all the time). That theme being not so much focus on the superhero aspect, but more focusing on the governmental side of the world, with the King of Wakanda solving certain issues with his superhero alter ego. It isn't so much about Black Panther, it's more about King T'Challa, and Black Panther is a part of him. I find that is often one of the tough spots about the lower rated superhero movies, I.E. Batman v Superman. That movie was all about Superman fighting Batman, not so much about Bruce Wayne or about Clark Kent. Same with movies like Thor: The Dark World, Justice League, etc. This is also one of the reasons I'm in the quite unpopular opinion, in that I enjoyed the second and third iron man films more than the first. The first was more focused on Tony getting to become Iron Man, while the second one focuses quite a bit on Tony dying from what's keeping him alive, the third is all about a man he hurt in the past and coming back, and tony having PTSD from New York, and getting to be "dad" for the kid. It wasn't much about Iron Man which is honestly what I loved. Back to the original point of that ramble, is that Black Panther does really well with that. I understand why Iron Man 2 and 3 were disliked. They were both often hard to follow. The second was often, for me at least, not taken too seriously because Whiplash seemed like he just didn't care whether or not it worked out for him. Black Panther didn't have those bad things to me. I see what you mean about it being such a surprise when Killmonger comes back and shoots Klau, or shows up to Wakanda. I was very surprised. But I loved that surprise. I didn't find it hard to follow in this. I understood why they had him in the background through the first half of the movie, and brought him back in when they did. Obviously, Killmonger was a beloved villain, far more than many other Marvel villains thus far, for many reasons. The thing I loved about him most is that he had a plan, he had a reason for that plan, and you even felt bad when he died. He didn't particularly hold back either. He wasn't waiting for anything to come to him, he made plans and pursued those plans. Get rid of the herbs, get guns out to scouts, get rid of what he doesn't want and put in what he wants. All around great movie, 9.5/10 for me. Like I said before, the only real problem I had with it was the occasional over the top racial focus. Now we just hype up this entire week until Thanos destroys the world. Kinda. Maybe? Hopefully.

It will be interesting to see if we will get a reaction from the kingdom of wakanda-now that we see a major fight will now happen after they reveal themselves to the world. Depending on how much time there is between black panther and infinity war.

This film was amazing i loved the story and the characters. But the CGI in this movie wasn't that great especially the finale fight between kill monger and black panther. Another thing is that they introduced the villain late in the movie

Nice review. Only one comment. The ending scene in Oakland and the scene at the U.N. accomplished the same thing. They both revealed Wakanda to the world. They only difference is in how important you as the view feel the audience is. Coogler makes the point that the kids in Oakland are as important as the politicians at the U.N.

There is the map in the end of Iron Man 2 that shows places that Shield is watching which includes a spot in the middle of Africa, presumably Wakanda.

I really enjoy your channel. I felt like this film was so heavily over hyped and reviewed. The characters were fantastic but the special effects were rough. Killmonger was a great villian but he was gone for 45 minutes. Film just felt so clunky and the biggest problem is Chadwick himself. He is so boring and lame compared to every character around him. I saw it as in the mid to lower of the pack of MCU movies. But hey really enjoy the work you do and look forward to your Infinity War review.
