From another Kentuckian, Western Kentucky that is. Good video. I'm just getting into black powder myself. I have a inline Knight wolverine 50 caliber. I cast my own round ball and make my own powder. I'm also loading some 12 gauge shotgun shells to use in a old single shot that I have. I'm sure I will wind up with a flintlock or a percussion long rifle someday.

That's the scary part lol. I imagine if it rolled down halfway it would be the same as only setting the ball halfway, a barrel obstruction... If I had to use the method it would definitely be on a bench rest to keep the muzzleloader mostly level the whole time. I just wouldn't walk around the woods hunting with this method. Hunting stationary from a blind probably wouldn't be much of an issue though.

Yes. Occasionally the touch hole gets clogged preventing the fire to get into the barrel. Taking a touch hole pick with you ( straightened out paper clip works too ) and clearing the touch hole will help prevent misfires. Mark, another killer video. Im sure youve covered this in videos before, but i could use some help. I have a 62 caliber hawken style flintlock, half stock, with a rice barrel 1 1/8 36 inches long, no swamping. I have shot the gun with 80 to 110 grains of 2f and seem to get similar groups with all. @peteandresenfamilyadventur8742

I'm wondering the same thing myself. I'm shooting a Baker .62 rifle and the designated load is 95 grains FFG. I've killed wild pigs with .54 and 90 so I'm guessing this will work. Information welcome!
@blackpowdermaniacshooter

I agree with Pete Andresen....I believe 90 grains would be plenty to harvest a deer. That's a pretty potent load, especially if you are close to the target. Also..if you're achieving 1.5 " at 25 yards, you will have no trouble harvesting that rascal. Thanks for watching....

I still shoot with a patch every now and then, but I really like using R.E.A.L. bullets. A little fat for lube and no patch required. Darned accurate out to 50 yards. My range here at home doesn't allow for shooting past that so I can make no claims past that point. Loading is easy, cleaning is easy, and the projectiles are way more accurate than a PRB. They look just like a mini ball so they appear period correct. You should try a few one day to see the difference, it could cause you to convert!!

Love that Schuetzen powder. In order of usage.....Swiss is #1, Schuetzen is #2 and Goex is #3 on my priorities to shoot. The Swiss and Schuetzen shoots VERY well and the guns clean up very easy afterwards. I still have 3-4 pounds of Goex I will probably won't shoot again as long as Swiss & Schuetzen is available. Thanks for watching....

If you wanna run and reload, you need paper cartridges. That’s the method they used in the 18th century

I couldn't do that...it would take too long. I've never read anywhere where Lewis Wetzel or Simon Kenton used paper cartridges. Paper was scare on the frontier back then. They used loose powder in powder horns and Wetzel carried 3-4 lead round balls in his mouth. That was the fastest way to reload on the run. Thanks for watching.

It could be a dull flint, could be a blockage in the touch hole, if you're using substitutes powders ( pyrodex, 777 ) they won't fire very reliable either. It can be any number of combinations. Try picking the touch hole, sharpen or replace the flint & be sure the barrel isn't blocked or loaded. Those are the usual culprits that keep a flintlock from firing. Thanks for watching.

When you measure in the palm of your hand wouldn't the charge change due to the size of the round? It would also change if you cupped your hand instead of laid it flat plus it also seems that it would change due to the size of your hand. I have small hands. It seems to me there's all types of variations with your hand. Well I suppose I'm just going to have to get out there and try it huh? This video gave me a lot to think about but I suppose I'm going to have to find someone with a large hands in order to test my theory. Come to think of it my grandson has even smaller hands, he shoots my traditions 50 caliber Hawkins but we have to rest it on sandbags because he can't hold it up yet, he's only 11. I wonder how that would work. Well I guess I'll just go test and find out. You really don't have to shoot when you test with the palm of the hand although it's a lot funnier if you do. Thanks for the video and thanks for the conundrum I have going around in my head. I know Jesus loves you and I know Jesus loves me and I know he loves us all, may he protect us through this up-and-coming Fiasco. Hang on people we're going back to using black powder guns again, that is if we let him take our other guns. Think about it. Keep ye powder dry!

Hi, decent video. The old timers power and ball trick went like this. *You place the ball in your palm. Then you pour enough powder to only COVER the ball with powder.* You don't surround the ball, you are adding to much. Isn't .490 the standard .50 cal size?

@@blackpowdermaniacshooter , Why do you use a smaller ball?
@blackpowdermaniacshooter
@blackpowdermaniacshooter Жыл бұрын
@@GunDrone While most black powder shooters may put 18-20 rounds down range during shooting outing, I usually put at least 50 if not closer to 75-90 round balls down range. Its just easier to load the smaller balls than those thicker ones. If I have to pound the ball down the barrel, it is too tight for me.

@@blackpowdermaniacshooter , Understood. I am a lot like you. I shoot more than 20 rounds during my sessions. I admit that i don't shoot much round ball in my Bobcat .50. I shoot Conical R.E.A.L. bullets. but these bullets because they allow a better burn and some cleaning during shooting, i can shoot 60 -70 before start having problems with ease of loading. But the Bobcat has a standard old bore like CVA used to make, not the tighter modern inline bores they use now. I do however shoot a lot of round balls in the revolvers.😀

@@GunDrone Excellent. I seldom shoot conicals..I'm just an ol' redneck round ball shooter. I pour all my own balls, cut my own patches etc. The only things I buy is powder flints & caps. Everything else I'll improvise somehow.
