Water causes too much of a thermal shock on your carbide and will end up cracking and chipping it. If your chips are flaming up then your "speeds & feeds" are wrong + cutting too dry(use oil not water). Your tools will wear way too quickly.

"I'm using a little bit of water to keep it cool" the chip build-up in the short flutes of that center drill might be where you're getting extra heat from. Lol. I get it sometimes you just use what's sitting on top of the gearbox. Just wanted to be that guy.

lol, agreed, seem like they're unaware of how to manage heat. They need to understand the cutter types require the heat going Into the part vs the heat going into the cutter. They do make some c oil rings though.

All in all the color is the titanium's affinity for oxygen at high temperatures which actually preserves the inner grain structure of the metal. Basically Titanium Oxide surface coating is only microns in thickness. We call it "self healing". But there are many substances that will damage the titanium but that pertains to its strength at elevated temperatures. A whole rainbow of colors can be achieved by the process I use. Try making titanium ring from a part of the SR-71 Blackbird. It is a Grade 6 alloy. I have been making them since 2007, I am semi-retired now, with a long customer waiting list. I can only fill special orders from time to time. I have pieces available, the process is quite different, a bit trickier, all hand work, no lathes, takes from 3 to 5 hours to complete a ring, but then, they sell for nearly ten times the amount for standard Ti rings. When using a lathes, keep cutting bits sharp, and adjusted to the proper elevation and angles. The burning of titanium creates toxic fumes and can cause pleural disease and other carcinogenic compounds. Be safe, don't burn your shop down. ☮

I'm not too sure how familiar you are with microdermal jewelry, but I've been researching on how to go about making titanium blank dermal tops. Not able to find what method would work as these pieces tend to be no larger than 6mm. Any info would be appreciated.

You can always anodize it, the bonus is that depending on the oxide thickness you get different colors. The TiO2 formed from anodizing is somewhat protective, much like blackening, I don't think it makes it 100% scratchproof though.
