Ok so Taskmaster is a big character in the Marvel Universe. Known as one of the best hand to hand fighters in the comics, Anthony Masters is able to duke it out with pretty much any member of The Avengers. Over the years he's featured in a number of stories, games and animated shows and the character has been instrumental in training people like US Agent.
He's pretty much the guy your girl tells you not to worry about and because of this he's gained a big following over the years. For better or worse the film Black Widow decided to massively divert from this in order to change a lot of things about the core character of Taskmaster and yeah...it's went down worse than Matt Hancock giving out social distancing guidelines.
Coming away from the movie it's clear that the reveal about Taskmaster is probably the most controversial point of the movie and they're pretty much the Marmite of the MCU.
Jeremy Jahns said they were the worst MCU villain ever, my Grandma said they were the best and even after carrying out polls on twitter it's clear that opinion is very split.
Now personally I didn't like the portrayal but I know a lot of you do so if that's the case then I'm glad you enjoyed them. I'm not someone who hates women or even gender swapping and in the case of Flagsmasher in Falcon And The Winter Soldier, I feel that when it's done in service of the plot that it can really work.
Flagsmasher was someone who was meant to juxtapose the might of the US military and this lowkey, small and humble girl very much helped to paint out a normal person who was put into an extreme situation which I think vastly aided her portrayal.
For me Taskmaster is quite the opposite and throughout this video I'm gonna be going over why for me the character just didn't work.
Now there will be heavy spoilers here so if you haven't had a chance to check out the movie yet then I highly recommend that you check out now. With that out the way, thanks for clicking this now lets get into why I think Taskmaster Sucked.
Ok so in the film we learn that Taskmaster is actually Dreykovs Daughter Antonia. In the movie we discover that the infamous Budapest mission involved Natasha attempting to assassinate the villain and she was caught in the crosshairs because Nat was so desperate to kill him that she was happy to sacrifice a child to do it.

I don’t like this for two reasons: 1.) I hate the “it’s really a woman even though we made them look like a man” cliche a lot of movie makers do. It’s really lazy and pisses me off. 2.) Making the daughter Taskmaster lessens the impact of Natasha’s decision. I mean, she literally killed a child. We should’ve had more time to sit with the fact a fan favourite is a child killer.

Give the actress a costume that fits her and use female stunt doubles for action scenes. In AntMan they made the Ghost character a woman, but they didn’t fake you out by making the character look masculine. You could tell it’s a woman. Women can be badass characters too, you don’t need to hide them behind a masculine frame or get a man to do their stunts.

Since they said the “taskmaster protocol”, it gives me hope that this taskmaster is over and that there are others or at least another taskmaster. Similar to the weapons program where we have many different weapons like captain America or wolverine. Taskmaster is my top 5 favorite Marvel characters of all time. The plot twist with "him" being the main villains daughter as well as him being a girl shocked me. I'm not complaining but this was basically a completely new character. I believe they used the Taskmaster for marketing purposes to get more people to watch it. Taskmaster was the main reason I wanted to see the movie.

@@srntnjl523 Milena should have been known as "Iron Maiden" as a sort of nickname amongst the Widows because of how tough a trainer and taskmaster she is and how efficient and successful she is at her job. I wouldn't say give her a whole powered armor suit like Tony Stark, but giving her some gadgets or weaponry that isn't standard issue would be cool. Then, when this new taskmaster appears, everyone just assumes it's The Iron Maiden because of the tech and weaponry. But then, it turns out it's someone new and everyone is caught off guard

Tbf, the winter soldier is mindless in the second movie, brainwashed from Hydra. But the winter soldier is actually formidable. Everytime you saw him in the movie you could hear your own heartbeat. From scenes like the chase where he flips Nick Fury, to the scene in Pierce's house, to the highway fight to the final battle he is dangerous and at the same time he challenges the hero both physically and mentally

It wasn't just a gender swap, it was a whole character swap. Taskmaster in Black Widow is Antonia who is Drakovs daughter. Taskmasters actual name is Tony Masters who is a mercenary whos natural ability is muscle reflex, not an A.I data reading system running in her helmet which helps to read people's moves. It also doesn't make sense that his skeletal mask design was altered because of China's laws when in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame we see the red skull, and China was a huge part of Infinity War and Endgames success so they obviously saw the red skull. Taskmaster also doesn't have that much screen time which is disappointing. This is NOT Taskmaster, its a different character who shares Taskmasters name.

The problem is that this role wasn't unique to TaskMaster. Any other villain could have played that role, and it would have been the same effect. There was no magic to her nor was there any attempt to make...her...a menacing character or display...her...skill set Just another robot controlled character, no flavor, coming from a character who's selling point is all about flavor. In fairness though, some of the best work Marvel has done have come from tweeks and changes to the comic versions of certain characters. I mean I know there may be a few staunch diehards that really would have preferred "thirsty for them sexy bones" Thanos to "philosophical genocide" Thanos, but most would agree that was a needed break from comic origin dogma. I get the idea of feeling like Taskmaster was a wasted opportunity with a cool villain but for the bulk of the audience watching this movie, the character is not one that is so recognizable as to be immune from major changes. Plus the fact that Ross should now have access to the Red Room tech/chemicals/etc. makes me think that just like with Cap and Iron Man compared to Red Guardian and Crimson Dynamo/Whiplash, America will use the Taskmaster protocols to create a superior version. Regardless of the gender swap, Taskmaster was just a weak villain. They tried to tie it to Natasha's backstory and it felt forced and lazy. The character has a rich history, so it's not like they were short on material. Beside a few good ones, including the TV shows, Marvel has always had a problem with their villains. Marvel still has a chance to redeem Taskmaster character. They could explain Taskmaster suit was originally owned by a mernecary but it's stolen and being sold to the Power Broker. The Power Broker then give the suit to Dreykov as a means to strengthening their relationship as the people who's working behind the shadow. If they do this, they could tie in the real Taskmaster into Captain America 4 and have him fights the Power Broker, Falcon America, and US Agent.

I know this is late, but if during the ending scene when Nat used the antidote on Task, Task said "that doesnt work on me" and/or says nothing and continues fighting to show she wasn't brainwashed and Task eventually was subdued or ran-off, that wouldve been a much more satisfying setup to a cool taskmasker in the MCU. It's been a while sicne there has been a villain in the MCU that was just staightforward and ruthless. It would be nice to get someone who just enjoyed the hunt for the sake of it. I hope they deliver that with Gor or a really sinister Kang version later this phase.

It's essentially the studios over-reliance on making the villain a dark reminder of the main character's past mistakes. It happens way too often in MCU movies that use the heroes' past as a plot element. It's cool the first or second time it's done. But now it just removes the plot relevance of the villain from any further movies. There's no reason to put this taskmaster in anything else. She's now only crucial to this story and unless she turns evil out of nowhere between then and endgame she's only going to be an ancillary kinda hero showing up as a 'blink and you'll miss it' cameo later on.

They took away alot of what makes TaskMAster unique. His charisma, his DIALOGUE, his motivation. What we got in the movie was just some brainless slave. Even looking at this from a non-fan perspective the movie was was just one big meh. The definition of missed potential. If you look at Black Widow without thinking of the comics and just as a regular movie goer you realize it suffers alot from dumb supervillain syndrome. Dreykov is just your regular bad guy villain with no depth. The movie could have been better if TaskMaster were like his comic book counterpart because that version contains DEPTH but instead we have two brainless villains. Edit: This is obvious but the emotional moments are useless since we know Natasha dies. There's also the forced family dynamic. This honestly felt like a DC movie with how they were trying to force characters that hadn't been established previously. Something Marvel never does.

2 things that really hurt this movie: 1- taskmaster 2- the final 20 minutes (everything after the face-swap reveal) That said everything up until the face-swap/taskmaster reveal was fantastic. Best scene of the movie: The red guardian jail break.

That first scene where Taskmaster attacked Natasha, that scene was setting up a great villain until the moment she locked on to the package and left Natasha alone. Would’ve been way more menacing and frightening as a villain if she would’ve tried to eliminate Natasha. Even later in the movie, she didn’t try to kill Natasha. Hopefully they re do this character, cuz he’s honestly an awesome villain

Making the audience feel smart by giving us ‘a taskmaster’ without it being THE Taskmaster would have been better. We could have gotten a shadow in a flashback or a silhouette in a stinger to hint he was a trainer and that we’re getting the real version later on. That alone would have fixed SO many issues: the villain, the costume being male, the bad portrayal of Taskmaster, etc…

Tony mastars taskmaster was really good. Tony mastars is really good character with quite sympathetic background and absolute badass villain where Antonia is really nothing. Theory: Taskmaster (Anthony Masters) could exist in the MCU, because the suit Antonia wears throughout the movie could be Anthony Masters original suit. Which would make Antonia, Anthonys, biological daughter Finesse from the comics. Considering Black Widow is a spy like series, It would make sense for her character to have a convoluted backstory like Dreykov's wife/partner cheating on him with Anthony and her getting pregnant with Antonia. Which lead Dreykov to retaliate by further messing up Anthony's memories and leaving him naked and afraid in some random place in the world as revenge. So, the reason why Antonia, wears the Taskmaster-suit which makes her looks like a man is because it was originally Anthony's, her fathers, who was training and emulating the avenger and more characters to train the black widows in the red room. But in addition to that---he went on assassination runs as a notable killer. Thus, if Dreykov changed the suit, people would realize, Anthony is not Anthony and Taskmaster, would lose his notoriety/fear as an assassin because originally he was identified and seen as a male and not female.

The thing is they didn't need to divert so much from the source material, they've already did 3 gender swaps with villains that I can think of Ghost, Flagsmasher and now Taskmaster, it's becoming kind of predictable but all and all I enjoyed the movie still. One thing that does bother me is how every suit has to fallow Iron man's design in order to unlock to take the suit or helmet off, why can't a suit just be a suit without have to be michanical.
