Very quick and easy leatherworking project, making a sheath for my custom hatchet.
A plain design sheath like this will take only a couple of hours to make and will save the edge of your axe like nothing else!
Index of operation and materials:
0:08 Tracing head shape on paper
0:22 Cutting template
0:43 Tracing template on leather leaving a couple centimeters on the sides to stich
0:57 Cutting leather with box cutter
1:22 Tracing a strip of leather for the stitches
1:53 Sand off finish on all surfaces that receive glue
2:25 Contact adhesive
2:53 Flattening the glueup area
3:06 Sanding to shape the sheat (hand sanding would work just as well)
3:15 Beveler
3:23 Beveling all edges
3:55 Groover
4:05 Cutting grooves for stitches
4:24 Fork punch
4:30 Cutting stich holes
4:51 Grooving the other side of the sheath
5:05 Sizing holes with awl
5:24 Stitching with waxed thread
6:00 Marking buttons location
6:05 Punching holes for buttons
6:20 Attaching buttons
6:33 Strip of leather to lock the sheath in place
6:35 Rounding edges with box cutter
6:48 Beveling all edges
7:09 Punching holes for buttons
7:18 Attaching other side of the button
7:32 Dark brown leather dye
8:20 Matt leather finish
8:35 Burnishing edges
For those asking where to find tools:
I bought mine some years ago when I was starting to make leather sheaths. I went for the cheapest I was able to find. Have been working great so far! Can't find exactly the one I have but I listed some in my amazon storefront that are pretty much the same and any similar ones will work aswell.

I hate how you hang axes with cast aluminum you're ruining the temper of the head when you do that there's nothing wrong with hanging an axe on a wooden handle the right way they last years and when they break they're easy to replace

I'm new at leather. So far one wet molded filleting knife sheath as well as two axe sheathes. Loving the craft! This looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

I recently made a wallet at a craft place using similar techniques and the tools they provided made it so hard to make sure everything was even. Everything you did was beautiful and looks so much easier (though I know it takes skill and practice to have a product that looks this amazing!) Thanks for the video!

You make the stitch grooving look so easy. I’m awful at it- somehow my groove always comes out uneven, too far in or out. It’s very frustrating. Great video- it’s been a big help to me.
