Hot damn, this build was so good man! So many brilliant additions! The custom shaft, the pouring of the chuck and leveling of the magnet with epoxy... the feed mechanism that is spring loaded. Gosh darn, truly an excellent build! I'll be sharing this one for sure.

Nice project. Small suggestion: You may want to think about replacing the magnet with an electro-magnet which is powered up when starting the grinder (or via switch). That way you easily can remove the workpiece and it also makes it easier to clean the metal-dust.

Well done! But maybe u should bulk up a little, that handle. It looks too thin. What do u think about changing the belt rotation direction? Perhaps it would give you some upward leverage

Sure would help! but if the workpiece slips off the magnet, you'll have a hot piece of metal shooting towards your face.
@SuicideNeil
@SuicideNeil 3 жыл бұрын
The actual sanding belt? No, that would extremely dangerous- sending whatever you are grinding straight into your face if you slip ( along with all the sparks from grinding ). There is a good reason why they spin the direction they do normally.

I almost stopped watching when I saw the 3d printed chuck blocks. Then you dusted them and out came the sand casting form, f--ing awesome! Great job building the sander/grinding attachment! Here comes the jackass comment part about what i would have done different...I've been seeing this trend on a lot of these attachments, the use of one bearing block on a rail. I've even seen it done with the chrome plated round shafts with the open linear bearings, they are a bad choice all around though for this application. It's significantly less of an issue on your build compared to the round shafts but it's best practice to use 2 blocks per rail. The bearing blocks have clearance between the rail and balls, it varies a lot depending on the quality of the rails but its usually a few thousands. Using one bearing block you'll find the magnetic plate can rock up and down over its length. By using two rails you eliminated that issue accross the width (many only use one rail and one block, opens up many issues), adding two more bearing blocks will eliminate any rocking over its length and stop abnormal wear/failure potential. I custom build machinery for a living (industrial millwright/machine builder) and we use linear rails on almost every machine, sometimes multiple axis depending on the application. Most being heavy loads moving at high speeds. Regardless of load or speed though industry practice is to use 2 bearing blocks per rail. It makes for far more accurate movement and eliminates the high wear and failures you see when single bearing blocks are used. Its something to think about anyway if you start having issues holding tolerances after using it awhile. It's possible the bearings could last thousands of strokes before any issues are seen and the grinder might not see enough use to warrant any changes. Ok, jackass commenting done. I really do love the badass beltsander and the surface grinding attachment, the most original by far for flat/parallel grinding!
