This is one of the truest tech statements and the insane thing is that it's almost exclusively on the mobile phone side of things. Smaller brands get bashed hard or are never reviewed fully. Take LG for example, the V-series is a multimedia monster that is effectively unmatched when it comes to audio performance. Every review talks about the basics...no one says anything about the things that make that series unique. Your basic Galaxy or iPhone will usually get the following, Day 1 first impression, Full Review after a week or two, then a "re-review" where they go back and look at it again. It's just insane to me how much attention the two main makers get all of the attention. Then someone else like LG or Motorola can make the EXACT SAME THING and it'll get bashed because it's the same price as if because you're a smaller company the device isn't worth the money.

Until people stop chasing the latest and greatest we will always have this problem. A phone company should focus on creating a good phone with double battery capacity and make it affordable. The next shift is going to be foldable phones. Everything that doesn't fold will be labeled as old and crappy. Just bought a refurbished LG V20 to replace my Galaxy S5. Paid $150 for it. Paid 1 penny for my S5 because I bought it when Amazon sold contract phones through Verizon. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest, but unfortunately we are a small group and our views won't bring in the ad revenue for reviewers.

Reading comments around (not only in this channel) seems to reinforce an idea / theory that I view; that no matter what BlackBerry does, there would be people who would pooh-pooh it with quotes such as "they didn't innovate" (which is not true), and if say, Apple, or Samsung pushes out "something" that is just a minor upgrade, it gets hailed as if it was a holy tier Hail Mary pass (American football analogy) of some sort, even if the same minor upgrade was already present in any other competing products. You hit the nail on this. Too many brand loyalists who would just rather bury their head like ostriches rather than to really examine a product for its merits and demerits, and then they'll go spewing vile bile the moment an association to a brand they aren't associated with.

We've been talking about this back on the live stream days of this going on and I think we've seen it come ahead in 2020 and will lead into 2021. Most of the fun has been taken out of tech in favor of multiple videos about the same guaranteed proven brand. If you step outside of it the people just simply don't watch it. It's not all the tech communities' fault though (We're still the larger percentage of the issue) But with KZbin Algorithm/A.I which follows the trends of what viewers watch it became niche down into a particular genre of tech is what works on KZbin. Back when there weren't too many KZbin Tech channels, you could do a general tech channel with a few different topics in mind and see success but now with so many out people seem to like things niched down and dedicated with general tech only allowed on the massive established already. It's sort of followed the path of how TV networks worked. At one point you had a handful of channels that did general content and had something for everyone with being better in one thing over the other but could spread it out. Then cable came along and there are 100s of specialized channels that focus on one thing so unless you were one of the big 4 you had to specialize and that still hold trust with the shift to streaming and apps. I think its just how we like things as a society even though it's not the most effective or efficient way to go about it.

Right-on, Juan! I was a Blackberry person from 2005-2011. That keyboard was perfect. Have switch between Android and iOS ever since. I've stayed with Android because of the haptic feedback used by the keyboard. the iPhone doesn't have that. My current LG G8 has the most incredible haptic engine, giving me a near Blackberry experience. I bought the LG G8 last April for $309 from T-Mobile after I added a much-needed line of service. It every bit the phone any Samsung is...and more. But few reviewers give it the time of day...with many mocking its Hand ID technology. None mention the Hi-Fi DAC, which actually makes music sound like music. I've had the G8 for almost a year, and it's been my favorite smartphone ever..and that's included Samsung and iOS devices. Congrats to Juan for honest reporting.

This is a very important take on the issue. My dad keeps telling me to replace my Blackberry Passport and I keep telling him no even though the camera broke after it dropped on the floor. Since my very first phone, I don't think I've ever bought a mainstream, flagship phone in my life. I've been tempted once or twice just for a few hardware features but all the nonsense about the Android vs iOS or Samsung vs Apple is just a huge turn off. Then I realised Blackberry was still making phones. I've never used a Blackberry and in Asia, Blackberry phones are a rarity, but I immediately got a Passport based on the reviews even though it was already out on the market for a year at least. Hands down, probably my favourite phone ever.

It's how it works, a person goes to the store, wants a phone and leaves with either a Samsung or an Apple. And the latter one is not to eat. BlackBerry also wasn't a phone for sellers in retail stores to sell, nor it got the public's attention from marketing like ads, billboards or the likes. It's no surprise they stopped the collaboration on BB phones, there wasn't a new BlackBerry phone released in 1,5 years already.

Juan, I think you make the most intelligent and objective commentary in your videos. Its almost weird when other reviewers are clearly influenced to push a certain narrative to the point where it becomes extremely obvious. But ah well if it gets the clicks it why not. Keep up the good work Juan!

Man that's such a powerful message. I for one was gutted with the news! Blackberry represented the differences in approach to delivering a unique experience. This means all phones will ultimately be the same offering over time innovation will slow :(

Juan are you still using the KEY2 with your SIM as your primary communicator?
@SomeGadgetGuy4 жыл бұрын
Naw. Since then I've been bouncing around a bit for reviews. I did run it for my last short tip out to visit some family. It's such a great phone...
@KBoon4 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy So basically it's still there as a typing communicator, just not as your primary. I used to own no less than 3 of these Red 2's but sold them all as I got tired of the red color. The only reason I had bought them was for the revised spacebar which feels tight and firm in pretty much all of the 2019 and later built units. Now rocking a black HK variant with a build date of 02/19/2020 (took me forever to find) and a KEYone Black Ed, K2 LE, Motion, and Priv as "backup" phones lol

Yeah. I'll never part with my Priv, Key2, or Passport. They're going to be "museum" phones for me.

Thank you for saying it Juan! People who scream about one brand or the other, are not true tech fans, they are in fact brand fans. And that line of fans is very much limited to two brands! I love tech and I have used and am currently using various devices! I still have devices from years ago, that I love to fire up and play with, because they were innovative and unique, like my HTC Touch Pro 2 and my Palm Pre Plus. Not to mention my BB Classic and Keyone Black Edition!

Juan your rant is spot on. I am reminded me of all those Pixel 4 reviewers that just passingly mentioned its abysmal battery, while calling it the best Android phone you can buy. Are you kidding me? That thing is a lemon, d.o.a as far as I'm concerned, yet barely a word was made of that horrible, misguided decision by Google to put a paltry 2800 mah battery in a nearly $1000 phone.
@SomeGadgetGuy4 жыл бұрын
I really wanted to take that smaller Pixel for a spin. I really enjoyed my time on the 3a and 4XL. The BIGGEST issue IMO is Google should have given us macros. A red button, yellow button, and green button for battery life. Want GREAT battery, press the green button and it turns down the screen refresh, limits wakes from the radar, puts background services to sleep, and uses high performance cores less. The current argument for a Pixel SEEMS to be how easy it is to use, and how great the local assistant features are. Digging through the settings to maximize battery life SUCKS on the pixel currently and isn't easy even for someone like me. The battery capacity isn't really an issue if the consumer has better tools to balance how it's used. We're in the same ballpark as a smaller xperia or s10e. Those are all perfectly fine smaller daily drivers. Smaller phones aren't the same kind of multimedia machines as large screen devices.

Amen brotha! The brand fan thought process is very interesting to me. I think that that term rings true for a lot more "tech fans" then they would be willing to admit. RIP Blackberry, I hope we get to see you again!

Just found this video and I think it's probably the most intelligent commentary I've seen in a tech video.(Also loved your Key2 review, Juan). I'm a huge BB fan and this news was SO disappointing. I shouldn't have to apologize -and I won't!- for preferring tactile keyboards over virtual ones. I want to always have that option. And you are so right when you say the cellphone market is stagnant. It IS! Every brand is almost the same,. They are all anonymous plastic and glass rectangles. BB cellphones had class and the build quality was so much better than anything else. To that end, I have a question I'd like to put out: I have a BB Classic and love it, but I know I am missing out on Android OS stuff. I've been looking at the Key2 to be my new "daily phone". The prices of existing units will likely drop upon this news. Should I get one to be slightly more up-to-date, or am I just replacing one obsolete phone with another? All input appreciated!
@KBoon4 жыл бұрын
The KEY2 isn't nearly as "obsolete" as the Classic. Making the switch will feel like going from a Corolla to a Porsche. I would totally do it. Also using a KEY2 as a primary device
@Timoteo44 жыл бұрын
I've been with BB for as long as I can remember. I had to put the Passport aside when I could no longer use certain apps that abandoned the BB operating system. I moved to Priv, of which I'm on my second one now. The one I'm using started acting twitchy, so I got a KeyOne to move to when it finally quits.

This was a video that put it out there straight forward no BS truth is too many ppl just try to sway the public to purchase a brand. Ppl don't do enough research phone I'm on right now is from a company that had a good idea but poor follow through and really it has been a joy to have. I have now purchased a phone from a company I stated I would not buy from AGAIN. But after all the research and checking my boxes it's the product I want. Juan you are completely correct there are so many reviewers out there that ARE helping with the elimination of smaller companies

I bought an unlocked Key2 in silver on release. Sold it to a friend about 9 months later. I loved the phone almost entirely, but I take a lot of pictures, and the camera was so subpar compared to competitors. I bought an S10e about three months ago. It's a great phone. The camera is awesome and the screen is vibrant and beautiful. But it's just not the same haha. I'm missing that keyboard, and my easily generated app clones for multiple accounts. I'm missing that two day battery life and scrolling down on news articles using the keyboard. And most of all, I'm missing one of the best fingerprint sensors I've ever used... hidden in the freaking spacebar.
@brianabare75154 жыл бұрын
I don't think the phones are so much stale as mature. What kind of innovation are you expecting? Pretty damn happy with my LG 8 btw, but will be buying the next one when it comes out.
@Gabilleta4 жыл бұрын
That's what frustrates me the most about this space. We say we want competition but we chastise the smaller players because it's not like the popular ones but cheaper. We want companies to innovate but we only feed the popular brands. The conversation has gotten so stale that it's hard to talk to someone about a different manufacturer and not hear "Is it like -insert popular brand here-?". We say we are tech enthusiasts but the reality is most of us aren't. At the end of the day, it's sad to see another company go.
