+Blue Actually, bruce made a lot of them too including the ssj transformation theme! he made also the theme when gohan is transforming into a ssj2 in the cell games, he made full albums by himself, just do a little research before saying he didnt do anything and im totally aware he wasnt the only one behind the american soundtrack but he did a lot of them just look it up.

what saddens me is that some fans of DBZ have bad feelings about faulconer's music, and funimation won't be working with him again. You can tell he genuinely respects the show. He uses terms like "SSJ" and memorizes episodes by number. He is an artist, and so he put care and effort into crafting songs that both fit the show and stand on their own. He made the show what it was for so many people. Some people think that replacing the soundtrack was a bad decision, but it defined DBZ for western fans and made them love the show forever. Bruce Faulconer is a great musician and man.

SSJ3 theme, Gohan Fights Frieza, Vegeta turns super saiyan etc etc His music is amazing and Im a tremondous fan. I love the japanese dbz as well and respect what it did but as a 90s kid with Toonami nothing got me more hype than hearing his custom OSTs. The japanese version of DBZ makes the show have his cool mystic Kung Fu series vibe while the American version gives DBZ this Action Super Hero squad vibe. I love both for what they are but Bruce I'd kill to hear him in the dub of Dragonball Super even though I know its unlikely I mean *SS GOD THEME* *BEERUS THEME* *Vegeta rides a Train* THESE Are things I NEED in MY LIFE haha

Before watching this video, I was going to say some jaded, smartass thing about this guy's work, and give a middling opinion on it, but just watching the sincerity and involvement a d gratitude of this man. I tear up a little. I appreciate that FUNimation, Viz, and Sentai now have an audience that watches this stuff for what it is, and dont feel the need to tamper with it, but it would be great if these guys could at least collaborate somehow. If Japan commissioned Bruce Faulconer to work on a new show....woah. The 12 universes would shatter that day.

+John John No, that is Viz's version. I prefer it, but it is incorrect. They mostly translate well, aside from the tons of edits they have been making since about 2004,, but they do mess up on a few names. I like Vegerot as it is in fact the version I properly experienced; it simply is wrong, though, like translating Ninja Murasaki's name. His Japanese-ness is part of his character, unlike Commander Black, Colonel Silver, General Blue, etc.
@Drilbit
@Drilbit 9 жыл бұрын

Actually, they also have preference issues with it because a lot of it is meandering MIDI sounds that are quite cheap & mediocre most of the time. It doesn’t even have good production values because it was low budget, and some sounds are legitimately grating. Those are a few subjective issues people might have with it. (Also, it has a lot where it’s just an imitation of Vangelis)

Honestly, when I was about 12-13 years old I was very disenfranchised with modern music and hadn't really found anything I liked yet. This was the early 2000s and the age of boybands and pop garbage. The DBZ soundtrack was some of the earliest music I really connected with. Some fantastic character themes. It actually inspired me to produce some of my early music myself! Thanks Bruce, for all of your creative talent. I know many people like Kai, but DBZ just isn't the same without the Faulconer soundtrack.

Thanks blackenfist for the interview. Thank you Bruce for your contributions to a series the world won't soon forget. The music elevated every scene it appeared in and amplified the emotional impact had on the audience. I haven't since watched a film production where the music played such an intrinsic role to the story and to my enjoyment of it ( Yu-Yu Hakusho gets a distant second in my opinion). Thanks for taking the time for a video interview Bruce, my best regards.

I've been watching the remastered DBZ on the Funimation app to get some nostalgia. I had no clue that they took out Bruce's music for every episode. While I respect the original DBZ Japanese music, I do not prefer it. In fact, it nags at me so bad that I know I won't be finishing the series again. I had no idea Bruce's music had such a profound effect; it truly completed the DBZ experience for me.
@L33PL4Y
@L33PL4Y 8 жыл бұрын
They didn't take out his music at all. Faulconer started composing for the show somewhere around the Ginyu saga, and before that all the music was done by Ocean. So when FUNimation remastered and redubbed all the stuff Ocean had done, they got a new composer to do the music for all the stuff Ocean had previously done. Faulconer's music is completely retained from the point where he first started composing for the show, onward. Except for his opening theme song unfortunately, which was depressingly left out and replaced by the new composer's opening theme.

Ikr, he's not talking about most anything else (and there's a _lot_ more worth talking about in there as the general fandom would agree). Glad you caught on 3 years back lol Also he likes to openly take credit for stuff like the last Earth Music arrangement in DBZ Finale and the SSJ3 theme by Julius Dobos, because they both reference that opening composition. By contrast he never mentions anything from Smith or Morgan because neither of them reference his stuff.

This man is a LEGEND. His soundtrack is tailored to Dragon Ball Z which just makes it that much more special. I mean think about it - his team wrote a song for every character in nearly every situation for every saga and every mood (ex. Gohan vs Frieza, Gohan gets angry, Gohan approaches Buu, the Fat Buu theme, Evil Buu theme, Super Buu theme, and the amazingly underrated kid buu theme)! Each version of Buu had its own theme for crying out loud! He didn't have to do that! He even has specific songs for Buu waiting, Android 16 ripping off a tail, and even the androids stealing a truck (which is also an amazing song btw)! No artist I can think of would write an entire AMAZING song for stealing a truck! Now, I also have full respect for the original Japanese soundtrack. I've watched the entire show in both Japanese and English, and the Japanese soundtrack exumes an entirely different attitude from the American OST. It is more mystical and really makes the show feel like you are witnessing the ancient martial arts of times long forgotten. It is such a great soundtrack in its own right and I love it! Having said that, I grew up with the Toonami Funimation version of DBZ with Bruce at the helm, and it is truly the definitive version of DBZ for me (notice I said for ME). Others may disagree and that is fine because everyone has a personal preference. The Faulconer Production team is in a league all their own, and their passion for the show really shines through in every theme. Just listen to the Garlic Jr. Theme if you don't believe me. Garlic Jr. as a villain sucks and is pretty boring, but he sounds like such a complete badass because of the Faulconer team's score. I truly believe that without their musical input, DBZ would not be what it is in America today. Most kids I knew would not sit through a ten minute stare-down or power up, but they had no problem doing exactly that with the epic Faulconer score playing in the background. Lastly, I've read many complaints about how Faulconer's music never stops. These are valid complaints and I have to agree with them. Silence can be a great thing and would have benefited a lot of scenes. However, Bruce was directed by Funimation to have music playing during every scene - this was not his decision to make. That is what we were given and I am more than okay with that because of how awesome the music is. Bruce's entire team did an absolutely incredible job with the score, and I firmly believe that 20 years from now the Faulconer Productions version of DBZ will be the definitive one to watch. Thank you for everything Bruce and team!!!!

Thank you so much for doing this interview. Faulconer's music for DBZ holds a special place in my heart, and it really saddens me whenever I see elitist fans hating on it. He put so much heart and passion into that music, and it really shows. I'm sad FUNimation didn't have him do the music for the first couple of seasons for the remasters and instead had a new composer come in, because when you're watching it with the American music and it suddenly transitions from the new guy's music to Faulconer's one episode, it feels so jarring and unnatural. Some of my favorite work he did for DBZ was in the Garlic Jr. saga. There's some really amazing music there and nobody ever talks about it. I wish more people would do guitar covers of his opening themes for the show, because they're so kick-ass and barely anyone has covered them.
