Yeah, I got the shitty Canadian version. I didn’t even know Bruce existed until I was searching the web to find Buu Saga clips to rinse. Took a while to find, back then, but I eventually did and they were, of course, Funimation clips. The first was Goku finally killing Buu, and I was like, “who’s this voicing him? AND WHAT’S THIS MUSIC?!”… so yeah, first Bruce Faulconer OST I ever heard is what’s known as the SSJ3 theme.

Guys, reading the wide range of comments here, I'd like to clear up some things - regardless of where you stand when it comes to replacing a show's score. If you hate a show's Americanized score, please understand that replacing the score is not any composer's choice. For us, composers, at the end of the day it's a job. A job that we can get very passionate about and often don't even think of as work..! But in reality, scoring films is a competitive but rewarding profession that you have to work very hard in. Would you say "no, I don't want to work on this transplanted show because the original is good enough" and refuse the job? Of course, no. (I can only refuse projects simply based on my taste now after doing this for 20 years... usual projects. Still, I wouldn't say no if Joseph Kosinski approached me to score his new movie, whatever the topic:). Almost always, it's the producer or director who ultimately decides the amount, the feel and the TYPE of music the composer is hired to compose, based on marketing reasons or their personal beliefs. In fact, composers are often given specific notes for each scene about what to express musically. So if you hate the US soundtrack of your fav show, or the fact that the score never stops, blame the producer or director (or the general audience's expectations!), not the composer. If you love the score of a show, please find out who the actual composer is, before you praise or even support the name that's marketed to you. There is lots of ghostwriting and stealing in this business, less in some cases and an extreme amount in others... some are based on fair contracts, some are astonishingly unfair, unfortunately. Do your research, listen to the composers' other works, use your ears and it will be very easy to tell the true composers from the fakes. And, never simply fall for the credits. Lastly, if you are thanking Scott, Mike and myself for our music, well... thank you very much - and congratulations on seeing through the greed, lies, deceit, and self-marketing that has saturated many soundtracks thank to some foul corners of the entertainment business. Cheers and happy listening!

It's really too bad that "Foul Corner" doesn't sell the rights back, or you guys don't regroup together...but even then I guess they'd have to be entirely new tracks. I just love the music so much, that even watching the "CZ Edition" of BoG or even edited clips of super with your team's score was fantastic. My favorite DBZ games are Legacy of Goku II and Buu's Fury, and a very big reason for that is the score alone. Going back and watching versions of DBZ without the score isn't even close to the same. Actually, I try to imagine the score, even though it's not there or simply play it in the background. It's also one of the reasons it's hard for me to enjoy Dragonball Super; very few scores are even memorable, which is a shame. I feel like many of the fans of the original Japanese score don't even prefer the English dubbing of Z, so really, if only substituting music was not a thing of the past, and no lawsuit ever took place, fans of the English dub might be treated to something special once again. Thank you.

I know this is an old interview but something very important for people to know is that Mike Smith is actually responsible for 90% of the faulconer score, from the Ginyu saga to the buu saga. He was the first composer to be brought on and has stated in numerous interviews that he was the one who started that “DBZ” sound in the score. Scott Morgan also released a music sheet created by himself that gives credit to which of the 4 composers created what track throughout all 9 albums, and on that music sheet you will find that 90% of the songs across all 9 albums were composed by Mike Smith! Just to name a few that Mike Smith did, “SSJ Transformation” (Goku’s SSJ Theme), every single vegeta track ever produced including his “hells bells” theme and his Ssj theme, “The Dragon Theme” and many many more. So to put it to you like this, Mike Smith did 90% of the faulconer score, Scott Morgan did 5%, Julius Dobos did 4% and Bruce Faulconer did less that 1%.

Hey Geekdom101, I just watched this and it was pretty good! One note--the story about the emails from Faulconer giving out Funimation executives' private email addresses is 100% true. I should know--I received one and acted on it. I was in high school in the early 2000s. I saw an email address on Faulconer's website and sent him an email requesting tracks for future CD releases. I know for sure he read it because he responded in a way that was clearly not computer-generated, and since I was pretty specific in my requests, I actually got a lot of what I asked for (2 tracks on Best of DBZ Vol. 3; 6 tracks on Best of DBZ Vol. 4; and 3 on Best of DBZ Vol. 5, and 1 on Best of DBZ Vol. 6). In roughly 2002, Bruce sent out an email to, as far as I can recall, anyone who ever emailed him, whether it was positive or negative feedback or song requests for the CDs. I no longer have that email address, but the gist was what you explained: he wanted to do GT, which at that point did not have a composer attached, and he wanted a showing of support for the Funimation executives. I was one of the ones (you know--being 16 and all) who actually followed through and emailed Gen Fukanaga. Needless to say, Gen never wrote me back and Bruce stopped responding to emails shortly after Best of DBZ Vol. 6 came out. But I just wanted to tell you that this story isn't just a story; it's true.

Tremendous piece. I've heard of the rumors behind why Bruce Faulconer never came back but this piece puts everything in perspective. I've watch DBZ in Spanish, English & Japanese (English been my favorite & Japanese been my least favorite) and I can tell you that whenever I think of something epic in DBZ it has the Faulconer team music. It just brought so much to the anime. Spanish dubs tend to dub/recreate the OPs/EDs but nothing like what Funimation did with Bruce. Tbh, I wish there Faulconer like projects in anime. If you don't like it, you could always default to the original but as Bruce proved... Many still rank his music version of DBZ above the original (myself included).

Hell yeah! I love the music Bruce and his team did on DBZ but I didn't know any of this. Great video man, I love these types of videos. I'm sure they take a lot of time to make and don't get the views they deserve. I'm lazy, where/how can I contribute?

Bruce Faulconer was like the Dragon Ball Version of Ubisofts Patrice Desillets The impact that they left on their respective series will live on in our hearts forever

I love both the Faulconer & Kikuchi scores, both have their respective strengths & weaknesses. I may slightly prefer Faulconer for Z, but overall I prefer the entire body of Kikuchi's work across both DB & Z. All-around great music I always listen to, though.
