Hey girl. big ups for how far you have come. I am Nigerian, n girl, you reppin! Anyways, i am a registered nurse, i work in medsurg, and i have had patients refuse care because i am black. literally. no other reason. so, i am not even surprised, its really sad, but it is what it is. I don't let it bother me, i just try to remind myself....its not me, it them. i am not the problem, they are. goodluck babe.

Gold Okoeka hey girl! Thanks for watching and supporting 😁😁😁 And yeahhhh man that's tough. I like the way you handle it though. I know I need to work on the skill of remaining quiet after hearing ignorant things said to me. My first instinct is to respond, but I know now that this isn't how I should handle it when I start seeing patients.

i loved a day in a life! i can't wait for the next one. again i love your energy. optimism is something i defintely need to work on. and about handling a situation in which a pt dsnt want my care the only thing i can do is tell them that im just as well trained as everyone else , but ultimately the pt decides who they want to be treated by. it's their own personal problem. anyways, good luck on your exams !!!

It hasn't happened to me however one of my co-workers, while scribing for a ED Doc walked into a room where a patient told the scribe and the doc who was also a black women that she doesn't want to be treated by our kind. It's comments like that, that make me work harder. I'm currently completing my undergraduate with my husband and we want to be examples in our community to not let race hating, ignorant people stop you from being an example to our people that we can and do succeed. Thank you for your vids and stay prayed up. I love that you keep God at the forefront and let him guide your steps. Keep it up! Stay blessed!

@BlackGirlWhiteCoat8 жыл бұрын
In our first semester we got a foundational education, which basically means we got bits and pieces of a lot of different subjects that we will go further into detail in this coming year and a half. For example, we had lectures in Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Physiology, etc. If the week we were in was Immuno based, then the 4 lectures would have been different lectures concerning immunology. Hope that makes sense. If not let me know!

I sometimes think about this..what would I do if I had to deal with racist patients, ect. I definitely had my encounter with a racist professor for my radiological science program (only 40 accepted , so we are interviewed..along with observing in a radiation department, written personal statement, etc.). She basically said no "messy hair" (to a few black student..I later found out) & also she said if your late to clinical, I would be kick out (mind you I was super early, I straighten my hair for the interview & I'm always early to class, appointments, ect). I never dealt with racism personally... or maybe I just didn't noticed it & moved on. I'm black/Nigerian & raised in the south (don't want to name the state I live in lol). It really bother me & sometimes still does, but I'm going to keep going & remind myself that this is a story of my life & that I'm grateful for all our elders who paved the way for us🙏🏾🙏🏾 (parents, grandparents , historical leaders). This gives me the motivation to continue my educational journey! Glad you brought attention to this b/c this is still a huge issues that black men & women in healthcare (& other professions) will or might have to address sometime in their life. In fact, a report about this was trending Twitter yesterday. God Bless you! & good luck!! You can do it 👏🏾🔬👏🏾😊💪🏾!

From my understanding unfortunately if you face that type of racism, you are not supposed to act on your personal feelings but get them another doctor. Even though I know anyone would find it difficult practitioners are supposed to remain objective an focus on the patient care. I remember Dr. Tweedy facing that situation as he recounted it in his book but he somehow over time befriended the patient and the patient's family.
@BlackGirlWhiteCoat8 жыл бұрын
Yeah sadly I know that is what we are supposed to do. It's just tough to have to face these kinds of situations in the workplace in this day and age. Despite any obstacles or discrimination, we will still rise though! :)

Yeah, it really sucks that we have to deal ignorant racists in this world. What these uneducated folks fail to realize is that in order to be a practicing physician you have to pass the board just like your colleagues and depending on what specialty, u go into the numbers are ranging. You continue to be a child of God and pray for your enemies. If I was encountered by a racist patients would take the opportunity to let them know my experience and that I am qualified to take care of them. from there it is nothing you can, but respect their wishes no matter how superficial and irrational they are. We have a great community as minorities in medicine that builds a resilience within us. Our character speaks more for us than any situation! Us black women have been strong through much adversity and we will continue to be!!!

This is going to be a long comment sorry First of all I want to congratulate you on your accomplishments thus far and you definitely need to keep going and having strong faith in God is going to be key to that but just like Job in the Bible people are always going to be tested but don't let your faith lose sight or your joy get broken but I do have to say I can tell from the beginning of the video when you said you've never experienced anything racially tells me you're very young which doesn't mean anything but it also says alot because these new Millennials coming up born after 1994 born after 1991 born after 1989 they haven't really seen what I had to experience growing up and I'm 42 years old and there's people in this thread much older than myself they may know what I mean? racial slurs was just apart of my growth I had to fight in elementary school, Junior High, High School racially I had no choice there was no such thing as bullying when I was a teenager back when I was in high school when my class graduated 1991,1992 there was none of the things that young people are being coddled for now you just had to pull up your bootstraps and keep on pushin and if you had to take it out with a fistfight then you took it out with a fist fight and there was no coming home until it was done and I'm not saying that this behavior was right but to be honest it made me stronger it made my skin a lot thicker I've learned to deal with people on life's terms I know the difference now between people who are racist and people who are prejudiced those two terms are actually very different because everyone has prejudices we can't escape them and to be honest I have more respect for somebody who would call me a monkey and the N word then to be around white people who will laugh in my face and pretend to be my friend but actually there stereotyping me because they think a black person is someone who listens to rap music and lives in the ghetto and is from the projects or they won't invite you to their families home because of fear of what their parents are going to think to me stereotypes are more hurtful than just being true to what you actually feel and I think young people these days are almost acclimated to the stereotypes that they don't even see how wrong that mentality is for example I don't like when a white person approaches me and assumes I should know something about Newport cigarettes and the newest Lil Wayne or Drake album because I'm black so I shouldn't know anything about 80s new wave music and classic rock the reason why I'm saying this is because you becoming a doctor is a very big accomplishment but what you should look out for is these stereotypes and you're going to be taking a Hippocratic oath to help and save people's lives to uphold specific ethical standards there's going to be a time that you're going to be possibly working in the emergency room maybe someone's not going to like you and it might be because you're black or a woman but you need to make a decision are you black or are you a doctor?? that's the actual real gift of turning the other cheek and being humble and maybe that person will appreciate you in the end and even if they don't God sees all and the gift will be fulfilled and counted for I'm not a med student I actually came across your page because I was looking at another KZbin video of another young black female student and she's in medical school but she had videos up of different natural hair styles and as I was going through her videos she was talking about being a med student so I'm going to send you her link because she's actually talking about what she's experiencing as a med student I'm actually just a blue collar worker I do customer service for a living and I've been doing it for 23 years it's abusive but I won't have much of a retirement if I were to woll off on everyone who set me off based on the calculated words they choose I see that you're definitely into reading books that give you positive affirmations and spiritual reflection like Joel Olsteen he's a wonderful man very spiritually grounded but I would also suggest if you ever have the time to read Norman Vincent Peale the book is called the "power of positive thinking" my advice to you is don't get emotionally charged this is just a little fraction of what you're going to experience you're not practicing on actual patients yet so many of thousands of things are going to come up that could emotionally break you that doesn't even have to do with race but the continuity of patient care and whether you're a woman,a man, black,white or homosexual doesn't matter what you have to understand is that people don't like doctors I mean it's unfortunate they are the ones that save people's lives but they are the least liked people in the medical profession because people have fear of doctors you ask the average man that's about 53 years old if he would like to go see a doctor he's probably going to tell you no!!! people have good experiences with doctors and loved them and people have bad experiences with doctor's it's only in the last 25 years I think that the medical profession has changed its way they care for patients my aunt was a registered nurse for 32 years and she started practicing nursing back in the sixties she lived through the Watts Riots in Watts L.A 138 blocks in Watts blew up around her when she was going to school in Compton there was no continuity of care back then and I hate to say it but the nurses now are nothing compared to what my aunt was as a registered nurse these young nurses now don't even compare to some of the older nurses they can't even measure a stick to them cause you're either born with common sense or you have none at all because you can't be taught common sense anyway I don't want to go on and on because this is already long enough I just want to say good luck to you I'll be praying I hope everything works out for you it seems you are on the right path me personally I would have left the comment up on my thread so other people can see this type of mentality still exists anyway God bless oh and here is her Link kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGOpeIN_bsabkLM

Thank you for the message and the encouragement. I agree, there are a lot of things that I haven't experienced because I am young, but I know that as I continue through my Medical career the experiences will only grow in number. I am ready for whatever life has to throw at me. As a future doctor, the health and well-being of each and everyone of my patients is most important. This is how I will conduct myself as a future physician always. God commanded us to love and he has sent me down this Medicine path, so I know that this is where I am gonna make my mark in the world.
