Jenny Le Hi Jenny! We don't have PA school in NZ.. I was wondering if you would recommend nursing school as a back up for medicine..?
@suzanneb29237 жыл бұрын
Current PA student here! Just wanted to say thanks for uploading more content about the PA profession on your page -- it's still a relatively newer healthcare profession (compared to doctors and nurses) and it's good to clear up any misconceptions or misunderstandings about what a PA is and does. In my personal opinion, I can honestly say that deciding to go into PA school was one of the best and smartest decisions I ever made! Here's why: 1. I love that I am able to practice medicine and treat patients in many of the same aspects that an MD does. PAs undergo intensive educational training under the medical model of healthcare, and after we graduate and enter practice we are able to take medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, develop treatment plans, counsel on preventive care, assist in surgery, and even write prescriptions. 2. I love the fact that we are given the opportunity to reinvent ourselves. PAs work in a multitude of specialties, including dermatology, family practice, urgent care, surgery and more. We are trained to be generalists and are taught a little bit of everything during our 2 year master’s program. We also have a lot of laterality in terms of where we decide to work and what we would like to focus on. For example, while the option is available, there is no need for an extensive residency program if I decided that I wanted to switch specialties after a few years - I would just need to find a good supervising physician and practice willing to train me on the job. The possibilities are endless! 3. I also love that their shorter education requirements mean that I get to graduate in my late 20's, enter the workforce sooner, and have more time to enjoy life outside of school, travel the world and start a family. Becoming an MD is a huge commitment - both financially and time-wise - and I sincerely applaud all who decide to follow that route in order to practice medicine, but in my heart I knew that it was not what I wanted for me and my partner. People choose medical school and PA school for different reasons, but at the end of the day the decision will be up to you. There are positives and negatives, good and bad, to any career and the medical profession is no different. For me, it was simply about being able to do what I love in a field that I enjoy, while also being able live a full, rich life outside of that as well. Also, while it's true that there are some PAs who tend to have more of a mentor-like relationship with their physician supervisor (especially newer grads), I've also seen the opposite end of the spectrum where the PA and the MD work as partners and the PA exercised greater autonomy. A PA’s scope of practice depends on a lot of factors, including where they work, the state they live in, their skill level and expertise, and their relationship with their physician supervisor. A lot of people get confused, associating PA's with MA's because "assistant" is in our name. We are not assistants -- we are partners in medicine, working in collaboration alongside doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and more, with the ultimate goal of providing quality patient care to every person who walks through our doors. :)

Suzanne B How did you go about getting your Patient care experience? I'm thinking about becoming an EMT for a year or so for mine
@suzanneb29237 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I took a CNA course during my last year of undergrad, then spent the next 2 years working as a CNA in a Telemetry/Progressive Care Unit. I also worked as a floater for the ICU and ER. An EMT is a great choice for healthcare experience! You will learn a lot about how to take care of patients and will be exposed to a wide variety of medical conditions and medical professionals. :)
@suzanneb29236 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! In terms of advice, I would say you should shadow multiple professions in the healthcare industry to get an overall picture of what each occupation is like. Shadow doctors, PAs, NPs and ask each one about what their day-to-day life is like, what they like/don't like about their jobs, education requirements, work-life balance, and if they are happy with their choice of career. Each person had a unique journey to get to where they are today and it's worthwhile to get a feel for what you might see or expect in the future. Prepare yourself by understanding this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you're just starting out this will seem like a long journey, but that doesn't mean you should skimp on the prep! Study hard, get good grades for your prerequisite classes, work on getting patient care experience, volunteer, do well on your GRE, maintain good connections with the people you work with so you can count on their help when it comes time to asking for letters of recommendation, and keep hustlin' til you make it! It's not easy but it's worth it in the end.

For those of you who think becoming a doctor will not allow you to have a personal life. That is not true just like any other career life is about balance. I know plenty of medical school students including myself who participate in non academic extracurriculars. Some travel (during breaks/weekends), dance, play sports, or even have their own band. PA school is NOT easier than medical school, if anything it may be harder because you have to learn a lot of info in a shorter time period (2 years vs 4 in med school). Anyway choose a career you love and don't make "not having a life" influence your decision. I know plenty of nurses, doctors, and PAs who all complain about not having enough "free time."

******Alley******* thank you for this insight. I was told to go into PA b/c I also desire a healthy work & leisure balance. Was trying to find out how many hours do a internal medicine doctor work. Do you have any insight on this?

Agree. When people say PA is the easier route and for people who didn’t get into medical school.. not at all. Schools don’t want people who have PA as a backup plan. Some schools don’t want to take people who took the MCAT because it makes PA seem like a backup plan.

Im currently in school to become a CMA. I will be graduating in May. What would be your advice for a CMA who might want to further their horizons? Basically what are the stepping stones at this point in the medical career? After doing my clinical rotations I've become more infatuated with becoming a PA. I want to get some experience as a CMA first to see how I like it but I definitely dont want to limit myself. Thanks!
@ZombiePenorCancer7 жыл бұрын
is cma the same as cna??
@lovelylivie147 жыл бұрын
High Kitty Nope they're different! They are very similar though! CNAs work under a RN and majority work in Retirement homes and hospitals. CMAs are a little more advanced as far as what they can do and schooling. They work directly under Drs. CMAs are usually the people that you see at almost any family practice or specialty office and even hospitals. Everyone always assumes that the people rooming patients are nurses but majority are CMAs. The simplest way I can kind of explain a CMA is like if a CNA and a Phlebotomist got married and had a baby you would get a CMA 😂 I'm a little biased since I'm about to graduate from my program but it's an awesome career field!! I absolutely love it! I encourage you to get further educated on the career because it's definitely a great contender! 👍🏻 Hope this helped!!
@yudelleanlisatajirikenyana45196 жыл бұрын
High Kitty cma I believe is Certified Medical Assistant - quite different coz they deal with out-patients. - patients who come to see their doctors for regular check - ups. CNA it's more of the harder work depending on where one works. - They mostly deal with bed side care.

@@gen7453 in middle school I was advanced in math. In high school same. Advanced in math. Took AP and DE classes (if still in high school, DE classes are so much better). In college it’s hard to be advanced since you just pick your classes. I did skip college algebra since I took it in high school. Only math I took was precalc and stats in college. I majored in psychology and took 1-2 science classes every semester (since most of the prerequisites are science classes). I graduated college with a 3.6 GPA (I had two Cs - one in history and one in bio 2). Everything else As and Bs. I was at the lower end of my class in PA school and i graduated with I think a 3.2 in PA school? Studying my butt off. But I made it! And it doesn’t matter how low you are in GPA in PA school as long as you pass the PANCE! But.. PA school is the most difficult thing I have ever done by far. But I think if you have motivation you can get through it. But you need the motivation.

Hi Jenny! Thank you for doing this video :) I requested it in the last video and was so surprised how quickly the video came about. Unfortunately I have such a bad ego where I just feel like i always have to be a doctor due to being the one calling the shots or being on the top leadership area. However, I don't see myself being a doctor for the rest of my life 😅 I felt very confused for a long time because I don't want to regret not trying for med school or settling for less (not saying that pa isn't a hardworking speciality but that med school would take more commitment and time). Is it true that most doctors stay as doctors for the rest of their lives?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Kimberly Wu Yes most doctors usually stay doctors because we're passionate about the profession. And even when you become a doctor, it's a continued learning process. But I also know doctors who have businesses on the side, or work as a physician part time to focus on family. I suggest going to med school because you can't see yourself doing anything else. Because med school is tough. It is a long commitment. They don't pay you well. The hours a long. And you sacrifice a lot of your life, energy, and family to pursue this profession. You will be miserable if it is not your passion.

Hey! I just have a quick question. Im a freshman (undergraduate) and a biology major and I just finished my first semester of college with 2 A's 1 B and 2 C's clearly I didn't do so amazing. People say it doesn't matter what you major in to go to medical or pa school but I dont exactly get what they mean. If im a biology major and someone else is an english major dont we still have to take the same classes (pre requisites) if we both want to go to med or pa school? So what difference does it make if you major in something easier like humanities versus something harder like science..dont we still have to take the same classes if we want to get into med or pa school?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Yes, both statements are correct. You do not have to be science major to apply for medical school or PA school - you only have to fulfill the required biology courses and do well on the MCAT (for medical school). This is why, when applying to medical school, they ask for an overall GPA along with a Science GPA. The advantages of majoring in something besides biology when applying to medical school is that it sets your application apart. Hundreds of thousands of people apply to medical school and only a few do not have the typical major like biology. If nothing else, it may spark administration interest in your application.

What PA program/ School didn't require bachelors but just an associate? I just got my associate's in science this last spring. I'm getting ready to start an LVN program. Once I graduate I plan to work for a year or two to gain experience while going to school to obtain a bachelors so I can apply to PA school. However, if there is a way to just apply straight to PA school that would be awesome. Just wondering what school was it that allowed you to have just an Associates degreed and graduate with a bachelors and Masters?
@MHSMagicLuver4 жыл бұрын
They used to only need associates. I believe all of them are phased out now. There are direct entry programs though now which is mostly for high schoolers who know they want to do PA. They can get their bachelors and masters in 5 years compared to 6 (4 bachelors, 2 masters) but there aren’t many of them. Since this is an older video hers could have been an associates to bachelors (but she said she will be graduating with a masters) or it could have been the 5 year option.

I'm not in it for the money but I don't want to struggle and place my future family through that financial situation. If I decide to become an MD will the debt really be an issue? I'm confused by this. I read a lot of articles of doctors warning about it and saying they can't afford to pay it off and so it worries me.:(
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
kimberly velazquez I took out loans for med school like most students. The reality of it is - all doctors will be in debt. But there are specific programs where you can pay back your loans based on the income you make. I haven't met any doctors struggle to pay for loans, but I have met doctors in their 40s-50s still paying them off. I personally do not regret my decision to attend medical school.

beautyblueable What my video "How I got into med school." It should answer a lot of your questions. All surgeons have to go through 4 years of medical school first. During med school, if you are still interested in becoming a surgeon then you apply to a surgery residency which is an additional 5 years.

@stefanynguyen666 жыл бұрын
Disha Patel u have to have bachelor degree. Then u can apply for a master degree in physician assistant. Every school is different. Some require u have to have prior "paid" medical experience some don't.

jenny i have a question do you have to be hard on your self in high school even though I'm asking this question and I'm still in 9 and I want to be a doctor do I have to work so hard for it
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I feel like my parents taught me good work ethic. I did well in high school but college grades is what med schools will be looking out. Working hard in high school will help you succeed in college and hence give you a better change to get into medical school. Its all relative

I would like to be a doctor one day bc I myself would love be the one taking responsibility in taking care of someone's health. If I were to become a pa would that better my chances of getting into med school?
@seapinkoyster8 жыл бұрын
I personally would not recommend becoming a PA then a MD. It just takes too much time. It takes at least 3 years to go through PA school, and you must factor in the time you spend on trying to get into a PA program and then a MD. If you are a PA and do want to become a MD then I would say it does increase your chances of getting in more than the average biology BS students if you have work experience as a PA. If you graduate as a PA but never work as one and apply for med school, it will hurt your chances.
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I agree that if your ultimate goal is to become a physician, then I would by pass PA school and just apply for medical school. This would save you both time and money. There are other ways more effective ways of boosting your resume. For example, volunteering, shadowing physicians, mission trips, etc.

im a senior getting ready for my first year in college. i was wondering if i can go into a PA program in a MED school? or do they not offer PA programs? im trying to prepare to be a Physician Assistant ^^
@yoohaki60407 жыл бұрын
i dont know if it made any sense >~< i was wondering if a PA interested student should take a MED school. is there any route in the med school that relates to a PA.
@drjennale7 жыл бұрын
+yoohaki 아이구 I am a little confused by your question. PA school is two years. After those two years - you become a physician's assistant. Medical school is 4 years - after which you become a doctor. They are two different paths in medicine. Just like how nursing would require a different path. Nurses, PAs, and doctors all work together but they all have different rolls. Some schools like University of Washington offer both a medical school program and a PA program. Hope this answers your question.

Are the prerequisites for Med school and PA school the same?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
No, I believe they are different. PA school does not require the MCAT. Instead some require 1-2 thousand clinical hours. I believe some of the prerequisite courses differ as well.

Honey Lemon when I checked. You take about the same pre reqs but medical school requires physics whereas PA program does not

such naive PAs. They said they like working with supervising physicians. After several years in practice, theyll start joining their colleagues in complaining about getting more autonomy.
