Verdine played the bass in concert back in the 70’s. I saw their concert & back then there were no Computers, tracks, sequencing. As for the studio sessions…I don’t know if it was Verdine on the LP’s or not.

Yes indeed, Verdine was a cold and the musician who jumped started my career. I loved pretended that I was Verdine as a kid :). Jumping around playing the bass LOL. We finally met him at The Complex back in 1980, I was 18 then. We gave him a demo of our music and he told me that the bass player was a bad M.F. LOL.

As a 40+ year bass player myself, I have seen EWF perform at least 10 times and I have yet to see Verdine "play" the bass! He plucks at it, but I tell you from experience, he is no where near the "vituoso" some claim him to be. Non-players are fooled, but without backing tracks, we would not hear bass guitar live. I have yet to find a video of him playing for real. And his "solos" are embassingly elementary - cringe worthy. Then there's that thing on his head!! This guy did not play those beautiful bass lines on those hits!! Go back and look again, look close!!! I love EWF music, but Verdine isn't the one playing!!

@TonyLee. Bro,' I've been an avocational musician for ~ the same length of time. (Studied music formally from Grades 4-12. Then was a music minor in college). I've written some lengthy thoughts on this same topic here on YT over the past 2-3 yrs. In summary, I AGREE WITH YOUR ASSESSMENT. There have been rumors for years that Louis Satterfield (or other session bassists) recorded the bass tracks on A LOT of the beloved EWF hits. The clues just don't "add up" mane. I've tried finding clips online where Verdine gives flashes of some bass virtuosity. They just do not seem to exist. Then, how can you dance around doing semi-complex choreography moves & still never even get out of the pocket with the drummer? I concluded (some years ago) that they're using sequenced bass tracks when they perform live. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Don’t know how things are with EWF and Verdine White nowadays. Changing bands and genres took me someplace else on my musical journey. Didnt play much EWF after. I saw EWF back in HS (mid-70’s) and he was amazing. He definitely played his parts then. He was the real deal.

The late Maurice White, Charles Stepney, & Louis Satterfield composed, arranged, & wrote MOST of EWF's hit tunes (including the bass lines).
