CC501 - MARRIAGE & MONEY
In the premiere episode of Couch Conversations season 5, Ace & Shelah discuss the ins and outs of how money management changes when two become one. When did you first discuss combining finances? Was there hesitancy? What was each person’s individual relationship to money and how has that evolved over time? From the cost of bundles to knowing when to step out on faith, the couples describe some of the uncomfortable - but necessary - conversations they had to have with their partner about money.

Wow. I can't believe this is Ace Hood from "i woke up in a new bugatti". I can see the growth and that he's doing well for himself. He reminds me of Haile from WSTRN.

I grew up in a middle class, two parent household who had professional jobs, but we were not to be materialistic. We had nice, decent clothes, but the focus was not name brand, but to look nice. We live in a highly consumeristic society, where Americans of African descent are aggressively marketed to. We are just 12% of the population but are featured on almost every commercial! Think about how this affects our mentality about having “things”, not to mention our debt. My sister and I are both single, in our early 50’s with no kids, both mortgage free and debt free. We purchase what we can afford, do not live above our means, and don’t have a problem shopping at Goodwill. We both enjoy nice things, too, but our values lie in who we are, not what we own. May our community awake from the spells being cast upon us. Love and light!♥️♥️♥️

You mentioned blacks being featured in ads, however when blacks are not featured it would be seen as not being inclusive of other race. How do we as a community strike a balance?

This was truly black love conversation. We as black people need to have more conversations about finances and sex. Most of us growing up didn't have these conversations with our parents (single or two family house holds. God Bless You All! Continue sharing Black Love.

11:17 I was always the kid that would hustle . I never asked my parents for anything because I think I assumed that they couldn’t afford it. When I was 13 I wanted a puppy. I saved up $300 from walking kindergartners home from school. I organized a lemonade and snack stand with my friends in order to raise money to fund our club. I mowed relatives lawns to make my own cash. Kids shouldn’t just be given everything. Work ethic has gotta be taught.

As an asian man, i love this conversation. I am learning a lot. Unfortunately, in the asian community, we don't have open dialogues like this about relationship or money and so it can lead to pitfalla. My last relationship failed cause we disagreed with when it came to money. Money is the most important thing when it comes to any relationship. I feel less stressed now that i am single

I loved this! Conversations around finances especially in marriage. Your perspective on finances as an individual playing out in your marriage! Pressure!! We need to learn that money/finances is a tool in which we can use to make us more. Changing our perspective on money will change the way it comes in your life and what you can accomplish with it. Hearing these wives come through on how they have their man's back knowing that they trust their decisions even if they're successful or not was everything. Thank you husbands for speaking from your truth on your low times and your failures. That vulnerability with your partner and the world is what makes you extraordinary and resilient! For this too shall pass!

I think there is a healthy balance of showing your children working hard to get the things they want and give them want they need and a little of what they want. I see so many kids that don’t see the struggle of life and they develop entitlement and aren’t as grateful for what it took for their parent to provide them,

I'm so grateful for the internet and KZbin and the ability to peek into other people lives and learn from. In this world where everything feels so disconnected and relationships are deteriorating faster and faster, it's good to see that there are still role models e can aspire to, and that the negative press is but one side of the coin. Thanks to all the panelists for sharing such intimate parts of your lives with us!

Great discussion I think everyone put all their cards on the table. Growing up in a two family household doesn’t mean total security because even though my Mother & Father were married with five children he didn’t allow our mother to work & he worked & controlled the finances. As we got older she started working than I felt like we were in a better situation. She always told us keep your credit right & don’t co-sign for no one ☝️ get what you need not what you want all the time. I still live by those words. For the other couple about not having birthday parties 🥳 after five 🤔 we always had cake & ice cream for our birthdays our Mother baked our cake 🎂 & our Dad would make the ice cream 🍨 & it was just us & we’re in our fifty’s now & to this day we still have that cake & ice cream don’t ever stop because it’s the small things that matter the most! The trips are great as well 😊 really enjoyed the conversation.

My siblings and I were always provided for, however, I got a job at 16 to learn responsibility. I started paying for my nails and hair and whatever else I wanted in high school. My mother always had a work ethic, which past down to us. The worst thing you can do is spoil a child. It’s nothing like marrying a spoiled child. They always need a fall back person because they have never learned to stand on their own. I know of several grown spoiled kids🤦🏽‍♀️

Marriage is beautiful if it's with the right person make sure yall have the same values, on the same page, and that's your equal yoke , look at the red flags dating if too many dont marry them they will not change it can take years for change only God can change a person, ask GOD is that the person you should marry if not let the person be removed from your life. Once you find the right person it's beautiful. I'm married didn't do all the things I stated but you live and learn I married the wrong person but I know better now.
