What’s up, my homies!! It’s Lisa Bilyeu and this episode of Women of Impact is ABSOLUTELY FRIKIN’ FIREEEEEE!!!
Today I’m joined by my boy Trent Shelton, a former NFL football player who became a motivational speaker after struggling with fear and anxiety and thinking he had nothing to live for. Through picking himself back up, he actually ended up finding his true calling - helping people become their best self!
Trent is here to help me dig into this BIG question: Why do SOOOO many women settle in a relationship, even though we KNOW our needs, wants, and desires aren’t being met?! Women are actually CHOOSING to suffer instead of leaving, and it’s GOT TO STOP homies!!!
That’s why I’m picking Trent’s brain, digging into topics like:
- WHY you settle, even though you KNOW you deserve more
- HOW to get out of the relationship when you feel stuck
- The beliefs that are HOLDING YOU BACK & how to change them
- The 2 things to look for that inspire influence and trust
- How to flip the script on boundaries so you actually protect your life and soul
- HOW to go about setting a new boundary for the first time
- The importance of letting go of the guilt you feel for what happens to your ex
- Habits you can do to build your self-worth back up and move on
- And what to do so you DON’T get pulled back into the addictive relationship.
It’s TIME homie!!!! It’s time to set your boundaries and say HELL FRIKIN’ YES to yourself so you finally start protecting your peace, and finding your power.

Oh yes I do , when I was married I felt very lonely and rejected. When you are in a marriage or have a significant other who's not there both literally and emotionally it's terrible !!! Being single is much better ✌🏽

That's a horrible generalization of single people. It's like the married people who think single people are out having carefree sex just because that's what you're thinking about. You don't know all single people and can't speak for them. Maybe they're single because they were in a crappy relationship after relationship and know exactly what you're talking about. Enough with the victim mentality. A lot of people have suffered that and they do know but also some people expect that one person to fill everything in their life, that's what friendships are for, and psychologists, too many people dump on the other person expecting them to be everything, all the time and yes, some others are just not there. Don't get me wrong, I empathize with your situation. I know I have to look at myself in my situations and can't completely blame the other person. Wishing you peace, love, & happiness.

I have been alone for 15 years, INTENTIONALLY (my idea). I would rather be alone, happy, and have self respect than be with someone who doesn’t treat me correctly. Happiness and fulfillment does not rely on being with someone.

I personally think one should rather stay single rather than settling. But here is the thing... You might have "settled" and later realized, you made the best decision of your life. Nonetheless, there is nothing like a perfect marriage or relationship. There are no formulas to these things.. I However learnt that in everything there is always a solution, 5 years ago my wife and I were on the brink of a divorce because we were having some difficulties in our marriage but we are back together ,it was a really bad phase but we got through it..

I'm glad you said "people" at the end of your comment. By middle age, I've honestly seen more men I've known (family, friends, colleagues) who were afraid to be alone. What I mean by that specifically is men coming out of a divorce and immediately wanting to find someone else to the point of acting like crazed, starving beings - not listening to people who try to tell them to slow down, take time to heal, etc... etc... This is my observation, and I'm just one person, but it's been enough for me to notice. As a single woman, I've tried to explain to them their desperation isn't attractive (except to those women who are ALSO desperate), and I've tried to direct them to videos like this and most just dismiss any of it. There is research to suggest that men - especially older men do not do well or thrive without a romantic partner. 🤷‍♀️

I stayed in an extremely toxic 10 yr relationship because I was scared to leave. I didn’t think I would ever find better. Plus my family pushed me to stay with him. It took a lot of prayer and strength to finally leave. I’ve been single and abstinent for almost 4 yrs now. There are still times when I question if I the “the one” will ever come along but would rather be single than miserable!

Going out of the comfort zone (in my opinion) into the unknown, knowing what you are needing and wanting for your life is "growing pains." I have a new rule of thumb that I won't buy a book that I can get at a library. THESE books from Trent ....... I BOUGHT them in order to go back to them whenever I want or need to! "Protect Your Peace" was a #1 best-seller on Amazon when it was still in pre-order mode. THAT made me see how AMAZING the info is after coming across him in another interview which led me to his KZbin videos. This is worth every penny of it. It's helped SO much and STILL is! I'm diving in DEEP so I'm still reading it! I love that it doesn't have any "fluff" but all "substance." And no, I'm not being nudged nor paid to leave this comment.

Really liked this conversation and the addiction perspective of Eros love. The chemical/soul tie connection can especially happen when what you've exoeriened (the positive experiences) are what you have never experienced before. Very similar to addiction because you're looking for that relational 'high', ignoring/denying how truly crappy the negative experiences are.

I don't believe that he mentions that people who set boundaries and leave when those boundaries are not respected are waiting to find someone else. Trent believes that you should not be waiting at all and instead feel at peace with being alone. That no one should settle for something that does not feel full filing, even if that means staying single forever because it's a better way of living.
