This is her prime year vocally. Effortlessly taking the sweet lemon peppermint line up an octave then singing the low octave with no hesitation. She still had complete power and fullness of tone in the upper notes, no covering. 1973 Aretha was the best.

Yes, it's a fabulous album. It's just too bad it did not sell well, especially after all of her 1972 success, including the Amazing Grace sessions.

People always say that the group Labelle was the first to dress in unique and flamboyant clothing on stage, but I always say that it was Aretha who wore unique and daring fashions first!

Superwoman of music ! The voice and the COSTUME !!!
@darkfeather6857 Жыл бұрын
I love the creativity of the costume! The 70s seems to have been such a freeing time for fashion, when entertainers dressed like comic book characters. Seems appropriate given how unconventional this song is. I love it!

It was the Cleopatra look. There was a big revival of interest in ancient Egypt in the 1970's. The contents of King Tut's tomb toured the USA to a massive turnout. It was front page news across the country. My Mom took us to see the exhibit at the De Young museum in SF, and we waited hours in line.

Thank you for showing this!!! Funnily enough, I discovered this album like a year ago and listened to it and loved it (Sister from Texas is my fav) and it annoyed me that it didn't really make a splash since it was one of her most creative albums. It sucks that sooo many people said they didn't get it, yet would happily listen to I am the walrus by the Beatles

Are you ready to go?!! This just made a bad day good! I so love the Hey Now Hey album and to see the title cut live is epic for me. Queen was not playing with the song nor the dress! Side-note now we know who was doing the background vocals on the album. Cousin Brenda, Margaret and Pat put their foot in them background vocals. Sounding like a choir!

Aretha wore some crazy, Wild mess back in the day 😂😂 but God she had a talent
@vm749711 ай бұрын
The mess is actually true African Cultural Attire. The Queen studied and admired her ancestors. Possibly, if you studied our ancestors if you're black American you will see that she is all of that and more.

She was said after doing this album, her selling streak and having number one hits slowed down for a bit. She always thought the “Hey Now Hey” album was a curse.
@theblueangel28 Жыл бұрын
But her highest creative achievement!! I'm so glad she made it
@thegodblogger3812 Жыл бұрын
Aretha's best records were when producers tightly reined her in. She tended to float off course left to her own devices. Quincy Jones produced "Hey Now Hey," but he and Miss Ree were at odds for most of the trip. Ultimately, he sat back and let her do her thing. As said before, Ree does better with strong producers who can basically keep control.
