I use a military surplus canteen and cup cook set, because that is what was in my price range. If money was no object, I would go with the PF40. I prefer stainless over aluminum because it is non reactive and won’t create funny colors or flavors if I bring something with tomatoes for dinner 😂

Hi Blackie, I have to agree with you, picking the M-40. Would be the most versatile for me too. thanks for the tip on putting a canteen cup inside, never tried that and didn't know it fits. Great video!👍

M-40 Stainless steel from the Pathfinder, looks like a high-end set…. and the tip about the stainless steel G.I. canteen cup add on…. I have a few extra canteen cups that would work fine….

That Swiss stove would be my first choice, " Oh!" " Wait!" That is what I use anyway. I carry both the U.S. Mess Kit and the Swiss stove, both fit well into most of my back packs, they both come in handy, as does my U.S. Canteen cups. I carry two usually. A habit I gotten into in the Marine Corps....Another great video Blackie...

I have two 2 quart bushpots, and the French press kit. I recently ordered the French press pantry set. I've been using the 2 quart bushpot for several years, in the field and at home. Makes good rice, soups, stews, pasta, mashed potatoes, easy to drain out water when boiling pasta, or making Mac and cheese. The 2 quart bushpot is the Perfect overall size for 1-3 people in my opinion. The one quart... I don't have one, but I plan to get one. The m-40.. dont have one, again, plan to. I do have the French press... makes great coffee, and is good size for cooking too. Just my two cents.

I’m coming in late to Bushcraft having been a backpacker most of my life and with my kids. But as I’m getting older moving to more Bushcrafts, as I understand it, and teaching my grown children as I go along. I like the versatility of the M40 over the bushpot and I like the multiple use options. Just wish there were bushcraft classes closer to Wyoming I could take my family to to increase knowledge and community

Blackie, Great Information on the Pathfinder Bush Pot cooking set , I prefer the 2 quart it better for me. Your meals are better than Black Eyed Peas and Sweet Pickle Relish for 3 meals a day for several days in the outdoors. Thanks Again Sir. For All You Do. God Bless Y'all .Tim L.

I have the Pathfinder PM-40, really nice pot. About half a pound lighter than the real thing but still plenty sturdy. I put a small grill in it, laid it on the side and cooked a Cornish hen in it.

👍 Good & Fair comparison of these 3 products. I also have all 3 from SRO and agree with comments. Having said that, the SRO 2-quart pot is now part of my RV cook system and never goes on a trek with me. Even for 2 people I can get by w/ the 1-quart pot. Again, for the reasons you mention, especially your point on versatility, if I had to select 1 for my only bush pot, I would learn toward my SRO M40 Swedish style mess pot. Not sure I would grab it, but I would strongly pulled in that direction, I just like my 1-quart pot set up. Inside my M40 I can store the Trangia stove, a bottle of fuel for the stove, cleaning sponge, a small bottle of detergent, and a small bottle of olive oil. When all this, plus a titanium Fire Box Nano and small titanium fry pan, is added to my 1-quart pot the weight between this and the M40 is about the same. The 1-quart system is more compact in the pack. I use a vintage Kelty A4 external frame pack.

I have them all including the 120 oz bushpot plus the eight inch and 10 inch fry pans. It depends what I'm planning. If its an over night. I'll go with the 1qt. If I'm going fishing I'll add a frying pan. If I'm going for 2 weeks I'll add more. Actually when you get right down to it, all you need is a pot, a piece of foil to make a hobo meal, and a stick to wrap your bannock on.

Great vid Blackie. I bought two M-40 sets back when they were $10-$15 each. Like you, I removed the bail hooks because they were to noisy and in the way. I learned to bake biscuits from your M-40 video; works great! Thxs fer the canteen cup tip too; I will have to try it. Take care.

I bought the pathfinder Swedish kit and agree that it’s the most versatile and compact cooking system. I like it because I don’t need to carry a separate wind shield plus the fuel consumption is very much more efficient with an alcohol burner

I know the question was picking one, but I think they serve different purposes. I carry the 1qt pot with my haversack for a small day kit. If I’m going multi day or have a base camp, I use the M40. The M40 definitely lends itself more towards the kind of cooking I’ll do when at a camp more than a day or two. A fourth choice I tried was the Pathfinder canteen set. Loved the canteen but I absolutely hate the folding handle on the cup, I never could keep it from collapsing while I was using it. If they put the butterfly handles back on it it would be perfect.

While growing up, I heard several people complaining of not having "a pot to piss in". It was hard to see why they couldn't find one. I often wondered if there is an appropriate size for that. Apparently, there was also a shortage of windows. 😁 If I do try to cook ramen noodles, I'm really careful which pot I choose.

The two qt setup…you can use it easily on a Colman single or double burner stove. Sometimes you can’t have a fire and some places you can’t use an alcohol stove because it doesn’t turn off like a gas stove or Colman does. Have fun stay safe.

The small bushpot is not big enough for active teenagers. From 16-24 I could pack away a lot of chow. I had some friends that would invite me for supper and she was a portions cook. I would stop at a fast food place and have a burger and fries before going to their place for supper and finish the evening at Dairy Queen. So keep in mind teenage boys are always hungry. If only I could eat a quarter of what I use to and gain no weight.

@@waynehendrix4806 If someone asked to helped them on the weekend, I would buy the biggest package of balogna, a package of sliced cheese and a loaf of bread for my lunch. Picnic or potluck I carried a chinet platter. No one cared because most had already raised boys or they a few years behind me.

i was leaning toward the 2 qt, but think Ill get the m40 first. This was perfect as I was trying to figure what to get. So many options are set for solo trips, I have a Stanley 2 cup system that works great for me with a twig stove and an alcohol stove I made. But Im starting to go out with my 2 sons, 12 and 7 and am needing more cooking volume

I prefer the seagull cook pot. Quart and a half one just personal opinion in history of use. It's hands down the best cook part I've ever used osed mine for ten years non stop for ten years it's held up stainless steel rugged construction comparable to the world war II mess kits which I carried as a kid it's easy to use cuz I don't like digging things out of a small little container that my hand can't fit in

Many food cans have a liner applied to the inside of the can that can melt off into the food, it’s better to cook in the pot and deal with having to wash the pot than risk poisoning yourself
@kylewilkinson6975

When canned food is immersed in water, the can linning will not melt even if boiled. So, there is no risk.

Canned foods have a spray-on plastic liner to resist corrosion which shouldn't be heated. It's gotten safer over the years but it's still plastic. If it's a matter of survival I'd do it, but if I had any other way to cook the contents I would try to avoid heating the can directly.
