Notice how people with musical knowledge recognize who’s actually good. No offense to other people, but Wheein tends to go under the radar cuz she’s not flashy and she tends to fill in the gaps but thats cuz she’s so versatile and skilled. Kpop stans who dont have any background knowledge in music or dancing dont see this, but people who do actually recognize her because they see how good her foundation is, her execution, how precise she is, basically in terms of technicalities she is pretty polished.

I remember when I first found out about Mamamoo, I thought Hwasa was the lead rapper and when I heard her voice I was completely shook. You'd think that with only 4 members It'd be easy to have a favorite voice but their are all so amazing it's truly difficult to choose.For me I think Solar gets me the most I really love her and her voice but I was pleasantly surprised to find Wheein as n1 cause even tho amazing she is unfortunately kinda underrated but you did her justice. Now I'll patiently wait for Pentagon,in my opinion they have sm of the best vocalists in kpop right now.

Samantha yes but she mostly shines in bsides like RBW knows what they are doing,the title tracks Solar have the climax notes because you know her voice is the most powerful and some notes mostly fit for the power while Wheein goes for a lighter mix. This video made me so happy, not only as a Moomoo, but as a Wheein bias. Because, the truth is she is one of the most underrated vocalists in the industry (even in Mamamoo) and one of the most underrated idols in general, which I seriously cannot comprehend because she's one of the most talented people I've ever encountered in Kpop. No one sings like her, with her perfectly controlled breathy vocals. That being said, Wheein's vocals have been described time and time again by their company as "Mamamoo's backbone" and people often consider her voice to be "healing", which is I think the best compliment a singer can get. Even though, on paper, Solar is known to be the lead vocalist, she has said repeatedly that she does not consider herself to be the best or the main vocalist in the group, because the rest are just as good. In Mamamoo, there aren't really any "assigned roles", because they want to be known as 4 people who can do it all (which they can, btw). Anyway, thank you for taking the time to cover our queens and I'm really glad you enjoyed it just as we enjoyed this video. ALSO, thanks for being so respectful about this; I really appreciate that. I mean, I have a whistle register I use for fun too. Using too much whistle register is tiring and it's just fun for showing off. If your whole song consists of whistle notes nobody would listen to it, it would sound terrible. And moreover, you really don't have that many opportunities to use it because there are not many pieces that involve notes that high.

I think they all are amazing, but Wheein is really underrated. Hwasa stands out because of her amazing tone and amazing lows and also high notes (obviously she is my favorite), Moonbyul has the deep voice, Solar gets the high notes. But I think Wheein could hit all the notes which Solar hits just with less effort. Solar seems to be more the effort-singer (which is not a bad sing since she practiced hard to get there and sounds amazing) and Wheein seems to be more the naturally-gifted one.

I've heard that Mamamoo were all taught by the same vocal trainer which might be why they all sing in a similar style. Their music is so good. I'm really excited for Pentagon's analysis too! I saw a comment recommending AKMU, I'd strongly recommend them too, Suhyun has a very unique and well controlled voice for her age. I would personally love to see you check out iKON and Nu'est. iKON are not vocally strong group but that's why I'd find a ranking very interesting.

This was a really interesting video. I'm glad more people are appreciating how immensely talented Wheein is. Her voice is angelic. A little bit of background on Moonbyul: Moonbyul was actually trained for a vocalist role in Mamamoo but their company basically told her that she isn't a good singer and she should take a rap position if she wanted to debut. She's been very open about how that messed with her self esteem + confidence. She basically stopped singing after that and only really started again a few years ago. Moonbyul's spoken a lot about how difficult it was to regain confidence in her voice, especially considering how talented the members of her group are and the reputation Mamamoo has. I truly admire her tenacity and I definitely think her voice is getting better with more experience. Wheein and Hwasa could easily be main vocalists in Mamamoo if they had more members or were in another group (although I agree that Mamamoo should have two main vocals, with four members one main vocalist is all they really have room for). Solar, Wheein and Hwasa are almost the girl group counter to EXO’s power trio. Moonbyul also exceeds the rapper standards in Kpop and I’d say she’s above average in rap. With Wheein and Solar (I’d even say Hwasa too) really who’s the best vocalist is debatable as it’s basically personal preference in voice.

Alla well Moonbyul isn’t really main vocal material but she could easily be a lead vocal in another group. She’s kinda pretty far behind the other three vocally and the demand for high notes in Kpop is quite large so usually a soprano will be given the main vocal position.

I agree with your list and how well you explained each member's strengths and weaknesses. Wheein really is a phenomenal singer as she wield her instrument with full accuracy. Her voice can assume any color and she does it well. Her biggest strength is her well-balanced, almost perfect mix. "Almost" because notes above a E5 tends to be more heady until she goes nasal. Her placement exceeds Solar's hence allowing her to comfortly support a wider range - her lows are phenomal too, but her middle and upper voice is where her color truly shows. Solar's amazing as well, the power her voice holds is crazy. And as you said, her C5/C#5s are electrifying. Hwasa brings distinction to Mamamoo's sound as her voice color is simply astounding and unique. Moonbyul, although not as well as the three, can hold her place as a good singer. She's smart and stays in an area where she can deliver well.

I've been saying this ranking forever to my kpop friends. Wheein is super underrated to those outside of the radish fandom. Her breath control and vocal balance amazed me since they debuted. But since Solar and Hwasa have more interesting tones, she gets a bit overlooked. But she's such a fantastic singer. Solar gets the high notes because of her powerful voice. Without the Solar's high notes, MMM wouldn't be able to hit the climax of the songs and hype up the audiences as perfectly as they did. Wheein's honey-like voice is softer (compare to Solar, but it is still powerful) and play a role in making their music sound more dimensional and of course it is beautiful/angelic on it's own. She is probably the most vocally gifted in terms of vocal range. Hwasa's voice can be both powerful and airy. Her husky voice is super seductive and her powerful voice emphasizes the stage presence that Mamamoo is known for. Don't forget that she is also a rapper. Although Moonbyul stays in the lower notes, her voice is equally beautiful and I would argue that she is one of the best rappers of this generation (not only in kpop). In terms of technique, I would say the three vocalists are equally good and all of them have different styles (they have different inspirations and preferences in terms of artists/music i.e. Wheein loves Ariana Grande and Hwasa loves Rihanna). Let's not forget how good their harmonies are when they sing together. The harmonies definitely prove how much control they have for their voice. Mamamoo wouldn't be complete without anyone of them. I would say Mamamoo is definitely one of the top when it comes to vocals. It is totally up to personal preference to decide which member is your bias. Let's keep in mind that Mamamoo is a group of best friends aka talented queens and we moomoos do not need to rank them.

When I first listened to them I loved hwasa’s voice and moonbyuls voice (Just her voice overall) so much. Then after I listened to more songs and got used to their voices and knew the members I fell for wheeins it’s so nice and just I haven’t heard anyone with her voice. When I heard the high notes she does in some songs I was so shocked. I also still love moonbyuls because I’m a sucker for the deeper voices, her rapping is amazing. One of the best rappers in kpop for me. Mamamoo is my fave group for vocals.

FINALLY! SOMEONE WHO GETS IT! 😭❤ Mamamoo is the strongest, most talented girl group that possess the BEST vocals in girl groups right now. Each one of them brings forth something to the table, and they work together to bring a great performance everytime. However, out of the 4 of them, Wheein's seem to be the most underrated. I think it's mostly because of the tone of her voice itself. Hwasa, Moonbyul and Solar all have something distinctive about their voices, so fans crowd them instantly. With Wheein, I feel like her clear crisp voice tone might feel like it's something 'usual' for listener (lets be honest though, her voice is amazing especially when she can mix her chest and head voice almost seamlessly) so it probably doesn't appeal to other fans compared to the other 3. But, if you look at any of their performances (esp the live stages) you'll realize that Wheein's voice helps to enhance the other 3 and is essential for the team. One thing i find so interesting about wheein is that she knows how to play around with her voice and her skills to match the person she's singing with, bringing out the best of them to really give a great show. And i think that for that to happen, her vocal skills needs to be truly good. Jung Wheein is an underrated but precious gem in mamamoo

So, idk how much you know about barbershop, but that is basically what Mamamoo is, a female barbershop quartet turned idols. That's why there is no formal positions of main vocal/lead vocal, because as you described it, you basically went up in the ranges that they would be in charge of, their vocal positions. Barbershop uses the Tenor-Lead-Baritone-Bass system, which is equivalent to Soprano-Mezzo Soprano-Alto-Alto II. Wheein - Tenor, upper harmonies and runs Solar - Lead, primarily melody, the voice that pops out the most Hwasa - Baritone, lower harmonies Moonbyul - Bass, in this case would be the lowest resonating notes along with rapping My opinion is that Wheein is better technically and is in charge of those upper harmonies because she has better control and knows how to alter her voice so she doesn't overpower Solar, who needs to be the one we hear best. That's usually what I see in my choirs, at least, though I also see it in idol groups sometimes, that the best singer is not necessarily the primary/lead/main singer, as they need someone who can execute runs and harmonies appropriately. Though I've also seen it where sometimes main vocals are those with the most skills, but all they do is runs and harmonies.... Anyway! Great analysis! I look forward to seeing more! One thing I think you should know is that mamamoo doesn't use 'main/lead' vocalist positions. They use the positions 'Vocalist', 'Performer' (Dancer) and 'Rapper' but they don't specify 'main/lead' and if they did - we all know that both wheein and solar would be main vocal.

to be fair mamamoo has alot of unassigned roles, so that's why all the other members could be categorized in vocal,rap, and performance. but this isn't plausible because they are only 4 people in the group. even though their talents go way beyond that, solar (seen in queendom while covering AOA's good luck) and wheein (seen in the king of masked singers) could actually rap really well too. hwasa and solar could also dance really well. before joining the group moonbyul actually practiced for the vocal role so actually if she gains more confidence and practice a bit more she could make her voice more powerful.

Wheein being 1 doesn't surprise me. Her voice is so clean and very soothing to listen to. She is amazing. However, I prefer Solar's voice because of how her voice sounds. I can't explain why, I just really enjoy it. However, there's no disputing the fact that Wheein is absolutely 1 at singing

I love your in-depth analysis. Indeed, each has their own color which makes them some of the best singers out there. Mamamoo may be one of the hardest groups to rank individually because as a whole they mix perfectly. No one can say one member can do another member's part better because each of them always delivers. There's no weakest link in Mamamoo which is proven by their solo projects. This is talent.

I feel like Wheein is just an underrated idol in general, she's been through some tough criticism regarding false rumors leading to scandals. She's such an amazing and talented idol like she is one of the best kpop female dancers I've personally seen out there (not *the* best but *one* of the best just to clarify) and as Sam explains in this video she has *amazing* and stable vocals.

Hwasa's tone really is sensational. Solar has soul in her lower-mid range voice. Wheein is technically great. But it would be nice to hear Wheein let go (let go of control and break the rules maybe). Hwasa is number 1 for me as a performer. But Wheein can overtake her anytime (I hope she lose control and really break free). I'd like to see Solar play the piano again. But I love them all no matter what.

Moonbyul wanted to be a vocalist, but was told by her company "the other girls are better, just don't sing", and for many years that's what happenned... so one of the reasons she doesn't have a much developt voice might be because they just did not let her sing... probably did not train her to her full potential... Solar is, with Ailee, the powerhouse of kpop 🤣🤣 Mamamoo actually don't oficially has the titles of "main..." "lead..." they're just "vocalist" "rapper" "performer" and whatever I'd guess Solar is considered main vocal because of the power she has, which impresses everyone, even if she just ignores the technique sometimes and might not have as much control of her voice as Wheein... But Wheein has suuuuuuuuuuuuch control over her body, both dancing and singing (which for some reason is difficult to find in kpop), that she could really be the main vocal and main dancer, a true ace

loved this video. great reasoning/analysis. i wanna recommend cosmic girls/wjsn to you. they have 3 official main vocalists (yeonjung, soobin, dawon) and some very strong lead vocalists (seola and dayoung). i also think a lot of their "sub" vocalists are pretty good (yeoreum, eunseo, meiqi). it's also worth looking into meiqi's and xuanyi's solos and their songs with rocket girls.

@@sambradley8297 It would be great to do soloists since - at least in my opinion - don't get the recognition they deserve in kpop. It's much more difficult to break through. I would recommend Taemin, Chungha, Sunmi, Kang Daniel, Kim Donghan, Iu, Ailee, Ha Sungwoon, Hyuna, Eric nam (please), Amber Liu, CL, G-dragon. Not necessarily because they are the best singers, but I've always wondered how good they are.

MMM are the best vocalist group of this K-generation. Individually their talents are just unbeatable but as a collective, it is undeniable that they are the best. I know they are popular in Korea but I wish they get more recognition and fame everywhere else. Also wheein is absolutely breath taking in "I Miss You" (Queendom version), that is forever one of my favourite performances.

first of all, thank you sooooo much for putting in so much effort into doing research for this video. you probably have to watch so many videos and dissect them carefully to make a good analysis. and you certainly did. also I really appreciate how you point out weaker points while being respectful and complimenting them. that’s what constructive criticism should be. I remembered a vocal coach saying that solar sounds like she trained really hard to get where her voice is while wheein is born to be a singer. *Sistar* and *Spica* are groups full of vocal queens, and mamamoo gets compared to them often, so I hope you’ll get to cover them one day! edit: lovelyz have lovely (no pun intended) voices + techniques too, even though they aren’t power vocals!

Just some advice for future videos if you want to hit a larger audience who are very interested in music as well. The way you have works, but hearing all the singing and then a long analysis without examples intertwined makes it hard for me (and possibly others) to exactly agree because we are hearing one and then the other. Generally the best analysis and critical perspectives are accompanied by examples for each point made, whereas you sort of do a show and tell then analysis. It is a bit jarring personally.

Wheein is amazing. As a Solar biased person, she clearly isn't as versatile as queen Wheein. That woman is AMAZING, a more than well-rounded idol but... I guess she doesn't stand out to the general public as much as her groupmates. Wheein really deserves much more recognition, and much more attention from the public because that woman is amazing in most areas where idols are often ranked
