Right now, the U.S. already controls a pretty big chunk of Bitcoin mining power. So, imagine if they went all-in with unlimited fiat and decided to throw money at the problem to bump that hash rate to 50%+? Now, here’s where it gets wild: what if, over the past few years, they secretly planted tens of thousands of nodes in the network? They could have a solid majority on both the mining and the nodes side. Then, boom-new laws come down, and suddenly exchanges and miners are forced to run a new, "official" version of the Bitcoin code that removes the supply cap or makes other huge changes. They could straight-up rewrite the rules. This is just a theory based on my understanding of the system, and I know it sounds veeeery unrealistic, but I’m really just wondering if something like this could actually be possible, even in theory?

The biggest problem with Blackrock owning mining shares is them pushing for OFAC and other ESG non-sense. Of course, with the rise of nation state mining, for their own private security, I think this risk is largely mitigated. In fact, it may well be that the days of private, for profit, mining are numbered, as more and more of the hash rate is sovereign sponsored. (So they can insure their own transactions.)

Good video but a BTC node is much, much cheaper to run than a BTC miner. Could someone buy and run over 50% of the BTC nodes to force change to the 21m?
@MultiSmitty11Ай бұрын
From what I understand that’s not quite how it works. Basically as long as there are nodes running, a fork of the network can continue to exist. In the same way that the BCASH fork still technically exists today, even though BTC is >51% of the nodes between the two. If a malicious actor was able to deploy more nodes for their fork than real BTC has now, both networks would continue to exist independently. The only threat at that point would be if somehow the malicious actor was able to brainwash existing BTC holders and node runners, and slowly convert people and capital away from the true BTC fork to their new fork. As people are converted away, the networks effects would slowly shrink and it would eventually die away. Again, similar to what BCASH is going through. But again, it would take some serious brain washing of a lot of people all over the globe to switch from BTC to a fork that works against them.
@omarmylastname3124Ай бұрын
Marathon, the biggest mining company in their holdings, aims to get about 37 EH/s (not there yet)...globally there is 750 EH/s so they control only 5% of the hashrate...thats a far cry from the minimum required 51%. And as Mathew said the beauty is that the majority will simply fork away from the "malicious" chain. It is the network effect that has made bitcoin SO powerful...the code and the 17,000+ nodes running along with 750 EH/s that is an inordinate amount of computing power to match. Lastly Blackrock doing anything like this will destabilize BTC and its value will drop significantly because there will be distrust thereby causing BR billions in losses.
