Cam, a good idea on how to really stretch the brass powder and make it last longer would be to fill all but approximately an 1/8" of your cracks with a clear or black dyed epoxy and then mix up a small batch of clear epoxy and the brass powder and fill in the remainder. I'm curious if you played around with this idea. And if you did, what was your results? Also, I bet this would look flipping badass against the black of a burnt tabletop! Cam, I do a lot of cold cast metal figures . I use urethane clear resins as my binder, but the concept is the same as for epoxy. Metallic figures can be a budget killer due to the expense of the metal, which of course is tied directly to solid metal per pound cost. I slush coat my figures with at least two separate coats of metallic/resin then fill with the same resin but using an inexpensive filler(glass bead, urefill,etc), I have even used chop fibre where strength is needed. Have you considered doing a partial fill with bulked epoxy, then reserving your metallic powder for the top 1/8th or so ?

Omg finally you used metal and epoxy!!! Real quick I still think it counts as a smart desk and it’s not overly done! Sometimes tech can get a bit ridiculous and this piece I think will last much longer going the route you went. As for epoxy and metal… the more the better and pls use copper too! I just think it works so much better than actual colors, there’s something natural or authentic maybe and metals go with wood anytime, all the time. I love the knots and holes and gouges are accentuated beautifully by the brass and bronze. And thank you for giving tips on how to get the most out of the pour by turning the piece upside down to allow gravity to pull the highest concentration of metal closest to the surface. That alone will help me since you just made me order brass and copper powder 👍🏼 I have a simple blanket ladder for my sister out of knotty hickory which has gorgeous colors and striations in the grain and she picked it so I have to make these deep knots strong so I can incorporate the character into the piece. I think I’ll go copper, this hickory isn’t pale or pink, it’s darker and I don’t know I’d love either one but we’ll see what she decides. She’s also particular and that’s not always a bad thing
@jewdd19894 ай бұрын
Edit: Cam is obviously right about using 50/50 ratio of copper to (in my case) total boat thickset mix and don’t forget to wrap it with tyvek tape and tip it upside down!!! It literally pulls the majority of copper to the surface! When I first started applying the copper/epoxy it looked dirty, like gross water almost but I trusted his process of taping it up and flipping my pieces over and holy cow what a difference! It is a long process to wait for the epoxy to dry so don’t anticipate pouring and sanding soon but well worth it

Cam, I love the brass resin look. I would like to see it in something large like like a conference table or dining table. Cam - are there covers you can put on the USB plugs to help keep out crud for the long term? Another beautiful project. "...something she was gonna like that I was capable of doing..." isn't that always the problem :)

Cam: where did you get all those brass fittings from. Loved how the finished off the desk and tied in so well

Stunning desk. I love the light and other fixtures. Where did you get the light from?
i have seen many videos on this topic, and i can clearly say, you are one of the best woodworkers i have ever seen.. keep up the good work...

I just wonder, rather than standing out as an independent aesthetical element, metallic and impressive, how would it be like if all the gaps were filled with a humble material blended into the wood texture?

"the wireless charging technology might be a bit dated" but you put two USB type A ports there? :-P
@Zoroaster43 жыл бұрын
@Sage Eckman yeah I agree with you there. Might just be me but if my phone is going dead it's cause I've been using it. And I don't want to have to put my phone down and not use it. Also I'll be glad when USB C replaces everything, but for some reason they're not in a big rush to do so.
@Hewerrr3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the type A ports can easily be changed out for an insert with type Cs.
@jotoolethrower3 жыл бұрын
Those type A's are just for power though not data, all usb 2 and later standards can provide 5 V 1 Amp which is the most common charging standard. Fast charging would require a USB 3.0 or later as it requires up to 15V and up to 4.5 Amp. I imagine this was probably an aesthetic choice. At the end of the day though. If you've got the charger there on the desk does it need to be fast?
@G7OEA3 жыл бұрын
USB A is probably going to be around for the next 10 years usb c is great gir high power applications and high speed applications.
