Black-exploitation..... I disagree, all races use violence and drugs, even depicted in many movies. White-exploitation.... next time i watch taxi driver and godfather, fuck it, even fight club lol. Even that term i disagree with. Movies are art. Whole point is, regardless of views, black cast... So i don't see how that's anything other than empowering lol. Edit: Also an honor to have an amazing character such as Dracula being played by a black man. If anything if racists were evolved, they'd have a problem giving such a kick ass concept to someone of that background. I mean, i'm not buying that it was made as a movie to put down black people. Beyond crazy for anyone to think that. No way people were more woke and PC back in 1972 compared to now. Black exploitation, pfffft.

@@Prof.Pwnalot The fact you make a comparison of blaxploitation and "white-exploitation" at all is foolish. You very obviously don't understand the subtly of racism and how systemic racism works. You're a troll, but you must be educated regardless. "So I don't see how that's anything other than empowering lol." Would you say the same about forced bondage then? Consisting of ONLY black people? Is slavery empowering? Blaxploitation films are often riddled with stereotypes and harmful misconceptions. They were made to appeal to specific audiences in mind and made with low budgets to make a quick profit. The problem is not that black people are in a movie, as you claim it to be. The problem was that they were in this KIND of movie, cheap, without care. This was released in 72, but all throughout the 70s we have movies such as Alien, A clockwork orange, Star wars.. Where's all the black characters in those movies? They weren't getting hired for them. Your bait is not intriguing nor in the littlest sense funny. That's interesting, I didn't think of it to that extent. I had initially took it on a practical level that dressing a white body is probably different than a black body; as far as shading the realistic look of living flesh over dead flesh and setting the hair and what not. But that aspect IS directly due to segregation; with no interchanging of clients to gain experience, the only morticians who could accurately dress a specific colored body was a mortician of that specific color.

The culture war has made movie discussions more stupid.
@Tacman215 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends what he's referring to when he says that. Alot of movies and shows nowadays don't approach social/political issues with grace, but instead shove them down your throat or present them in a negative, counter-productive way, (offering no real solutions or examples of how to be, but instead yelling at the people, usually in the form of a blanket statement, that they suck). If any criticism for modern movies/shows is dismissed because "shows and movies have always had politics in them," then it kind of misses the point of the criticism in the first place. Approaching these issues as black and white, metaphorically-speaking, is a bad thing to do, and shoving messages down the throat of the audience without nuance, or by interrupting the story, is a bad way to approach those topics. There are definitely some who are against any social issues being presented whatsoever. If those are the people who James is referring to, then I agree with that.

@@sebsignat8286 Sebs, from all my James and Chelsea (Dead Meat creators and main stars through this channel and their other forms of entertainment, ie podcast, etc) listening and watching, I'm fairly certain they pick films based on two things: Input by fans through emails/comments and James' own desire to do certain films, like this one in Blacula. He's done kill counts based solely on fans outpouring and constant badgering for certain films and other times he's done films based only on what he likes. It's just a mish-mash of all these things combined. I personally love it as we get great historical lessons like Blacula, but also the main franchises as well. It really helps to keep things fresh. edit - to add also that James has talked about how he sometimes struggles doing the long running franchises that never were that popular (like Leprechaun franchise,) because they don't bring in a lot of views, which hurts the channel. He still does them, but I'm sure there's a strategy behind when to release Kill Counts that he knows might not get the most clicks. "Oh, I don't think that will work. We don't want to deal with the substance of slavery." "Well, we didn't want to either. Had to, and I think it hasn't been dealt with properly. This is a wonderful time to illustrate that there were African people who were concerned." Wow. That was awesome.

The "who scored the kills" breakdown is probably my favorite 'extra statistic' during The Numbers since you started introducing them. I understand it's not always useful in movies where almost all of the kills are the work of one character (such as slashers), or comparing films to earlier entries in their franchise (... again, like slashers). But I would love to see you use it again when it fits.

I always love the way that you talk about the production and the history and so many other things that give context to the creation of whatever you're killcounting, and this one is one of my favorites.

I always love it when James covers a film that’s more about highlighting such an interesting film even when the kills really aren’t that graphic. So many unique horror films that fall more under having a quality story then having creative kills.

Big shout out to exposing the "kill your gays" trophe! But I can kinda excuse it in this movie since it's a 70's movie, their deaths serve as a story/plot point, is in a genre known for stereotyping characters and sometimes you should take any exposure as positive than none.

It makes sense that Blacula wouldn't show up on film then because they still used silver in pictures. Nowadays it WOULDN'T make sense if a vampire didn't appear, because pics don't use silver anymore.

I fucking love that movie and its sequel. Both lure you in with schlocky titles, but then they're actually horror movies with a bucket full of social commentary and that's exactly what I enjoy. Marshall's portrayal of Prince Mamuwalde is just so good. I love how they fought for making this a serious movie as opposed to it being some hyuck hyuck movie about Black Dracula Being Black or whatever the studio probably initially envisioned.
