@Richard Falch from my experience the easiest and most effective way ( and the the only way I've achieved a black spine and finish with out etching) is to forge your blade as close as you can to what you want, after that refine the shape of your knife with a good profile grinding. After all that is said and done you can move on to the heat treat wich is where the black comes from (unless your going to etch the piece), then it's just a matter of preference on how much of the bevel you want shiny and putting the final edge on. Just my experience tho ( 1 1/2 yrs) a master will definitely have better tips! Hope this helped at least a little brother. Happy hammering😀

I really enjoyed that video! Alongside a couple of methods, I've not seen before. First: Dressing the belt with a brush. Very simple and effective as was seen here. Second: Adjusting the tang geometry in the vice with a drift/chisel. Those were really cool.

You can find W2 steel in New Jersey Jason Knight. When you were talking about steel for beginners that you posted 4 days ago
@lsubslimed4 жыл бұрын
I think he was talking about a specific smelt of W2 that was mainly found in round stock and wasn't smelted using recycled material, which is aka "virgin steel". It's a very high quality and constant W2 of which Don Hanson was the main supplier for other smiths. Unfortunately, the W2 sold in NJ has become rather "infamous" when it comes to getting it to harden properly. Lots of drama surrounding it. Whether the drama is warranted or not I can't say.

Nice Chef's Knife, My Granfather was from Pensylvania so Dean R. Koontz may be related to me. I don't have a Kiln right now so when heat treating with a forge I leave the AEBL stainless in and get it really hot. The specs say it should hold or "Soak" temp. for 17 min. ? 9:50 never seen someone sharpen a knife on a light bulb before, what's the wattage of that thing? Just kidding! When you ground those staggered grooves into the billet, suddenly it all made sense. Been watching that being botched on FIF and I always wondered why they could never get it right. In 5 seconds, you showed me how it's done like a little mini-lesson that you grind them into a pretty thick, short billet, so thickness is the real trick, not the grooves themselves!
