Blaming China For US Poverty And The Broken American Dream

In 2001, China joined the World Trade Organisation, with America's support. The US' belief was that free trade with China could create more opportunities for Americans.
However in the past 20 years, almost 5 million manufacturing jobs in America have been lost, as factories moved overseas, creating Rust Belt de-industrialisation, a surge in poverty levels and anti-China sentiment.
Dayton, Ohio, home of the Wright brothers, was once known as “The City of 1,000 Factories” and the Silicon Valley of its age. From 2001 to 2007, the city lost almost 23,000 jobs, as factories such as General Motors shut down. Ironically in 2015, Chinese glass-maker Fuyao set up a factory in Dayton employing 2,300 workers - the subject of the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory.
But how much is globalisation, and China in particular, to blame for America's deindustrialisation woes, and how much the one-percenters and unequal distribution of wealth? America's GDP after all has grown by some US$11 trillion since 2001.
[Editor's note: At 1:59-2:13, 2:46-3:00 These are not scenes of Dayton but Detroit and Los Angeles.]

I remember in the 80s, US did the same blaming on Japan. But instead of finding ways to improve on their product quality, they started smashing Japanese cars in the public and demand japan to do something. Now we are seeing the same treatment to China. If manufacturing is moved to India, blaming is going towards India.

India's case would be different because Indians aren't focusing on American market much instead they are focusing on everyone but America and especially focusing on Europe Second thing is that Japanese and Chinese have relatively better control over their country than Indian government which can't do much when it comes to buisness and at best could reduce some taxes and even that would require a lot of loophole exploitation that may not even be that benificial for the company at the end of the day.. So I don't think America could do much

America rejected the man that taught Japanese manufacturers the principles of continuous improvement and quality. Then US automaker goes to the feds for $50B bailouts - “to save jobs” first thing - they have themselves multimillion dollar bonuses and more more factories out of the country - to China -Mexico - India - that’s how capitalism works in America now - not the best most well run companies but those who can get the bailouts.

They cut hours when store not busy so they dont have to give pay roll. They CEO s are rich and they have multiple chains in the country and very little regulations from the government about workers rights. The real reason is Triffin's Dilemma, because the USD is the (unofficial) world reserve currency, it is overvalued. No company can actually have a profitable business in the USA and succeed globally because the USD's exchange rate is artificially inflated, making the cost of doing business in the USA too high and uncompetitive. Keynes was right when he proposed that the Bancor should have been the international unit of account for global trade, because having any country's currency be a reserve currency is unsustainable.

@@thebruhmomentum9798 the question is how China minimum wage can be so low? And they can live with such a wage and actually be content? Because they have better infrastructure, making distribution of goods become more efficient in their country, making things cheaper in China. The opposite is true in US, infrastructures are collapsing making distribution of good slow and inefficient. Thus making goods prices soar. Take Texas for instance, during that extreme winter, the infrastructure of their power grid is so outdated it collapses, creating scarcity of electricity, and as any "good" businessmen do, Texas private power company take it to the market then jack up the price of electricity, scarcity = competition to get the resource = higher price. So the problem is not only about minimum wage, but how is that minimum wage can be so low and be maintained.

First off your a liar. The top 5% of Americans own 65.1% of wealth in the country. You have to realize that the poverty rate in America is 9%. Compare that too 68% in India, 54% Iran, 44% Mexico, 30 Spain, 20% UK, 20% Turkey, and 15% of poverty in Japan. Our GDP per capita is 68,000$ per person. In China it’s 10,000$ per capita. 1 American is worth nearly 7 Chinese citizens. Also China isn’t done with poverty, they just moved the poverty standards so everyone in China is at or barley above the poverty line. In America 91% of people are not in poverty. Also out of that 9% in poverty, 8.8% of those people still live in homeless as they still have running water, food, and free education. Only 0.2% of total Americans are homeless which they are not 100% homeless cause they actually live in shelters we made it cities that give them food and beds. You just can’t beg for money from inside a shelter so they come out. Everything that your saying is wrong.

So China introduced painful but necessary changes to accommodate the incoming competitions. To blame China for the American industry changes is unreasonable and invalid. Japan, Germany are both rich country and both in WTO, and their manufacturing industries still stay strong and employing, why only the mighty US lost jobs? India joined WTO 6 years before China, and why India didn’t get to blame for Americans failure? The only explanation is, the US politicians know nothing about economic development but desperately need someone to blame for their own failure, and China happens to be the perfect target.

The US has been used and addicted to becoming number one when it comes to Industrialization and Manufacturing. However, when they are confronted with a formidable competitor like China, they begin screaming and wailing that China is reaping them off. In reality, the Chinese are hardworking people who are determined to succeed and lift themselves from poverty. Americans, on the other hand, have been blinded by past victories. The strategy that the US used to propel them to power in the last 100 years cannot be used today. The US must accept the inevitable, that they would have to share the world stage with China. Decoupling and a cold war mentality coming from some top US politicians may not work in this 21st Century of globalisation. Only cooperation and dialogue is the only way to resolve the widening gap between the rich and poor.

But Japan was small and had obliged to US demand and appreciated Yen from 200 to 100 in 1983. And for years now, China is bigger than the US in real PPP GDP, and much bigger in manufacturing and industrial bases. Worse, China is so much more superior in this pandemic management while the US is a total disaster, worse than a Third World. @@WayneTwitch are you sure you are American? Your English is so broken...but anyway, regarding what you have said, your hatrad towards the CPP is largely due to how the US government and the mainstream media outlets have been branding anything remotely related to Communism as evil and anti-freedom. This is simply not true. Yes, the CPP stands for the Chinese Communist Party, but the party actually does not push forward any communistic ideologies. China is a socialist country, one that's even less socialist then many northern European countries. People in China have all the same rights as the Americans do, except for two: the right to bear firearm and the right to directly elect top governmental officials. The CPP came into power in 1949, but it did not take away firearms from Chinese citizens until 1980s. For almost four decades, guns are legal in China. But throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, there were hundreds of gun related incidents taking place everyday, in every part of the country. Peaceful lives were disrupted, and innocent people were killed. At first, the CPP was reluctant to take guns away from Chinese citizens, for these guns might come in handy if western countries choose to invade China. But shooting incidents were piling up everyday, to the point that many gun owners in the metropolitan areas voluntarily surrendered their guns and asked the government to do something about it. A year or two later, China became the gun-less (almost) country you know today. Chinese citizens do not have the right to elect top governmental officials, not directly, but through People's Representatives. Sounds familiar? Representatives Democracy and electoral college, do these two terms ring any bells? In theory, US citizens have the right to vote, and most do cast their votes. However, countless studies have shown that one's vote almost never carry any substantial influence over who gets elected. If you are male, white, middle and upper class, has an advanced degree, live in New York, your voting power is almost four times of a black woman who never attend college and resides in Tennessee. Representative democracy is not a true democracy, most people' voting power is diluted, left with nothing but a participatory trophy in the shape of a "I Voted" sticker. But true, regular Chinese citizens are denied of any power in selecting top governmental officials, so the Americans win in this department. Not by much though, not until the voting system is fixed.

It would've been a tremendous step forward for both countries and really helped out the middle class of the United States. And then Trump came along and suddenly initiated a trade war. Because of that, America lost 4 years of progress and even moved backward. There is also a lack of intent in the congress to put down the differences and build better infrastructures and more into education. The anti-intellectualism in the US is also very appalling, where the reasonable and logical voices get drowned by the selfish and ignorant. It is so disappointing that a superpower government can be so blind to the issues its country is experiencing.

A fact is that the owners of many big “Chinese” factories are American. Yes, Chinese workers could earn money through hard working , but the owners of those factories can benefit much much more from those factories, and this is why they selected to move their factories to China. Therefore, logically it is not China who “destroyed” American workers, indeed it is those rich people in the US who own the “Chinese” factories should be blamed. Edit: In fact, those American companies have to cut costs of their products to make them more competitive in the market, and moving factories to China is an ideal strategy to achieve it. This is what called capitalism market economy, so why do some west people hate communism so much when they are actually trapped by capitalism?

Funny Fuyao glass is mentioned. People should go watch 'American factory'. There is a reason why factories moved to China, american consumers wanted low cost of goods but higher and higher pay but american companies want more and more profit in the early 2000s they did both by reducing labour cost by shifting factories to countries like china, SEA which even now is happening but now one more way they reduce cost is to automate. Fuyao Glass openned in AMERICA but cos their workers demanded more pay and unionized against the company so they automated a lot of their processes. i remember one scene in the documentary where the owners where saying that they would automate one process hence reducing 4 people on payroll right in front of the 4 people but cos they were speaking in chinese the 4 american workers were still smiling and happily working.

automation has been happening to all jobs around the world, not just manufacturing. Intelligent software has already reduced the workforce of areas like accounting by 20-40% in many companies. Many of the repetitive jobs and data entry can easily be replaced by just having one person do a visual check to make sure the computer has done it correctly. Since most of these jobs that are getting replaced are low skill jobs, there will be less and less low skilled jobs available for the average person. It will just make things hard for people to relocate when the jobs are simply not there. There is really no way around this because all companies in the world are profit driven, and automation is a great way to reduce cost as wages continue to go up.

Theoretically democracy is a good system, but practically, especially in US, the politicians are just busy lobbying for funds, after they have won, they will have to find ways to "repay " their funders.

I'm not sure if democracy is in fact a good system even in theory. Western Style Democracy had only been around for a century, we've yet to see major crises, emergencies, catastrophies, and civil wars to truly test it's sustainability. Everytime China collapses, at least it comes back stronger than before. We don't know if the US can pull off the same. Furthermore, democracy acts based on what people wants. This is based on the false assumption people always know what's best for their own interests, what's best for society, country, state, and for unborn generations.

As a certain ancient philosopher have said, Democracy is only as good as the education that surrounds it. Clearly not for the current generation of Americans as they believe everything without fact checking it first, and worse of all if it comes from their media outlets, they automatically believe it without "fact-checking".

I wish Americans can see that but most of them are blindsided by the left or right ideologies. They focus on trivial things like identify politics or abortion, etc. instead of reviewing the whole system e.g., lobbying, exorbitant campaigning, etc. Often times they vote for officials that actually hurt their interests just because they say what they like to hear.

The problem in America is the anti constitutional and unconstitutional central bank dictatorship. Federal reserve notes have no lawful value or intrinsic value, and they are not convertible to silver certificates. The federal reserve note has lost 95 percent of purchasing power since 1913, and there is no direct access to the fiat currency by American citizens. Cite: law papers of Kathleen Wells

I worked for a food company back in the late 70’s. It was interesting to see a trucker doing coast to coast making more than the president of the company when the nation was covered in snow. Union was the major reason. There was such thing as double time and even triple time. The president decided to move the manufacturing plant from New York to Indians where there was no union. This was the same reason why so many companies started to move to places where labor cost was lower. It just so happened DengXiaPing opened the door in China in 1979. Ironically the garment industry in the US where thousands of Chinese-Americans were employed were affected as well. There were hundreds of factories in NYC with thousands of workers. Their consumption created thousands of jobs in restaurants , grocery stores, hair salons, etc. All those factories had disappeared thanks to those unrealistic union rules. A dress that used to cost $10 in labor to make in the USA was selling for $100. When they made it in China it only cost $2. The same dress without the American brand sells for less than $20 dollars in China. As wages increase in China, the Chinese manufacturers are closing factories in China and open new ones in South East Asia where labor cost is lower. That is why China started the Belt and Road Initiative. The idea is to make the movement of raw materials and finished goods efficiently.

Most Americans were happy for China or indifferent around 2008 during Beijing Olympics. People were fine with Zhang Zemin and happy for Chinas rise during this period. Its just people around the world are disgusted with Xi Jing Ping, not with China as a whole. Everything that helped China grow and prosper, Xi has turned from and become belligerent world wide.. You have to see the difference. Xi is not China...but in China you cant even have this discussion thats very clear to all outsiders
