I've been enamored (do people even say that any more?) and admired Ms Streep ever since I saw her in a film, o say, back in the 1980s. I always found her intelligent, elegant, and one hell of an actor. That story about De Laurentiis is almost not surprising considering the images of women in his films. But the thing that hooks me about this interview is the comment Streep makes about windows. Ever since I was a kid I can remember staring up at windows, I'm not talking about looking in, just staring up at a lit window, at the light on the ceiling, wondering at the existences in those spaces, stories, gestures, thoughts. Ms. Streep put into words something I've thought about so many times. Thanks. Great interview.

@geinikan1kan And I’ve, in addition to learning a new word (enamored 😍, «épris» en français), listened to a little story I’ll use someday. So thank you too.

To say this is about beauty more that it's about sexism misses the point in perfect irony.
@prw565 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the title, I'm kinda glad they didn't put any of those buzzwords in here. They didn't even ask her about sexism in it, and I think that makes the video better for it. You can still see the sexism of the time in the details of her life, and talk about that if you want, but it gives the video a much broader appeal imo if you keep it away from anything in the cesspool of current politics.
@RadicalCaveman5 жыл бұрын
Well, it's mostly about Hollywood beauty standards - which are, of course, sexist. The only part that's about sexism more broadly is the bit about the women's magazine.

I'm not a huge fan of Meryl...mainly because I'm a man in my late 20's and she isn't my era. I've watched all the blank on blanks. This is my favourite. A beautiful woman (god was she stunning in deer hunter) expressing her insecurities openly. I love it! The Italian too? I'm part Italian, laughed my arse off. What a brilliant woman

Hi, Sam. I've also watched many of the Blank on Blank videos before this one. (I'm watching them in order.) It seems to me most of the celebrities have some insecurities. These interviews highlight their humanness. I'm a woman closer to Meryl's age than yours. This is one of my faves so far, also. ;-)

@Jim Newcombe dude this was years ago plus so what if he isn’t into every single artist that doesn’t matter. We can appreciate something without it exactly fitting our cup of tea and yes Meryl Streep and all the people you wrote are very distinguished in their line of work but they are not to everyone’s liking and that’s ok so sit down in your high horse and take a chill pill sir every decade has their own likes so just because it’s not what you understand just zip and listen

@Jim Newcombe He never said that she isn't worthy of his attention, he merely contextualized his comment by saying he's not her biggest fan given that he's grown up in an era where she's not been as big of an influence on our culture as she once was. Despite not considering himself a fan he could recognize her brilliance, it's high praise, no need to get defensive it will only deter people from enjoying her work.

She's always had some bizarre chip on her shoulder because of her blondness. In this interview, she claims that the director was "shocked" that she could speak Italian and she said that Pauline Kael (the famed, influential movie critic) hated her because she was blonde.
@appletree68986 жыл бұрын
She's not a natural blonde, so I don't think she has a chip on her shoulder about it. She's talking about assumptions people make about character based on someone's appearance. She also often tells a story about how she worked hard to create a "cool" cheerleader image in high school after being incredibly nerdy in middle school, but every image a person tries to adopt is a kind of double-edged sword in that no one is ever going to see the real you if they just focus on your outer image. It can be limiting to be dismissed as beautiful, just as it is to be dismissed as ugly. Meryl has experienced the whole spectrum, and maybe that's where a lot of her empathy and insight come from. She knows how to pick up the outer personas and put them down, but she's always looking for the common humanity underneath.
@kathrynmcelroy56588 жыл бұрын
Why are the upper echelons of society torture chambers for the talented? It's only gotten worse.

Meh. She is worth millions. She has a lot of options. If you want to show the face of real misogyny, then interview women of Islamic cultures or women living in any religious society. Feminists are far too pro Islam and asking a Hollywood actress about sexism is pretty safe stuff.
