The joke about Wexford was Ted saying that he missed "the buzz of the big city" but he comes from Wexford which is a small town on the Irish coast. At a guess I would say there's probably about 20K people living in Wexford town at a maximum.

Father Ted looks old because it is set in rural Ireland, it is like going back in time. The joke was that Ted enjoyed life in a Big City parish. Wexford is a city in the sense that it is one of the largest towns on the South Coast with a thriving arts scene but you could easily walk across it.

The team always intended to stop at three series, to echo the two of Fawlty Towers. It was just a tragic coincidence that Dermot died the day after fliming the final episode. As for board games, my family had a favourite when I was growing up called North Sea Oil, though we used to call it simply Oil Rigs. It was a Monopoly-style game that was guaranteed to start arguments and tears. Great fun!

Father Ted, brilliant comedy. All the outdoor filming was done in County Clare in the "Wesht" and the studio filming done in London. A lot of young Irish comedians and actors got there break on the show including a young Graham Norton.

Down With That Sort of Thing is a real thing. In the entertaining history series Reeling in the Years which covers Irish history from the 50s to the Noughties, there is one particular episode relating to the early 80s where one elderly lady dressed in black can be seen carrying such a sign at an anti-abortion rally in Dublin. A few minutes later, the documentary shows a protest march in support of the unemployed, I think, and yes, there she is, the same lady in black carrying the same placard: an all-purpose sign designed by a seasoned protestor 😂

The decor was purposefully made to look dated. Even the cars were long out of production. It was shown on Irish television not long after the original air date on Channel 4 in the U.K. but a large percentage of people in Ireland had Channel 4 and had already seen it. It wasn’t made in Ireland (apart from all the exterior shots) because the writers were living in London and pitched it there. It wasn’t that it was passed on by Irish television.

Literally one day after finishing filming the final episode for season 3, Dermot Morgan (Ted) suffered a heart attack and died. I was in high school when Father Ted began and still in it when Father Ted finished. RIP. :(

The creator has said there wasn't going to be anymore seasons anyways. When he's made other shows they only have a short run duration.. For example , Black Books has 3 seasons. The IT Crowd has 4 seasons. In the Making of documentary he says that season 3 was always going to be the last.

Interesting that you mentioned MASH. That was shown in the seventies in the UK. It is now being reshown on cable here ,but it has the original canned laughter track which wasn't the case when it was originally shown here. It really spoils it and is certainly not the better because of it.

I can understand why MASH was so beloved with audiences at the time, especially since the Vietnam war was still just about going on, but its so dated now. I remember it being on when i was a kid in the 1990s, and even then it seemed so dated. When you think of the fact that Fr Ted and Friends came out in the 90s, and here we are watching them thirty years later, they dont seem dated at all in my opinion, and they are as popular as ever. 1960s and 1970s shows were on tv a lot more in the 90s, but they were resigned to either morning time slots or very late night time slots. They seemed so dated even then, and you just watched them for the nostalgia and the fact our parents loved them.
