Even though Electric Arc Furnaces are so high tech these days, its easy to forget they're not a modern invention. The EAF was invented in 1889 and first used in steelmaking in 1932, but it didnt become popular until 1966. Today, EAF's produce 70% of the world's steel.

70%? Can you verify that figure? The ferrous scrap requirement would be unsustainable even with DRI as part of the charge make up. Surely Chinese production is based mainly on BF/BOS practice.

I worked on 1/2/3 furnaces around 1970. Amazing stuff. All gone now.

Inflation skyrocketing. No pay rise in 2 years only threats of job cuts. My hourly rate as an approved electrician is 16 an hour. Average hourly rate is now about 22 an hour. Conditions are dangerous and filthy and we get severely underpaid. Tell me any benefit of working for TATA as a skilled tradesman.

the blast furnace makes iron from ore you can.t make steel from iron in a electric arc if you can please explain ?
@TataSteelUK7 ай бұрын
Hi Paul, we will no longer be creating molten iron from imported iron ore in our blast furnaces then converting that into steel. Instead, we will be recycling the abundance of steel scrap we have in the UK in our new electric arc furnace. One of the wonderful things about steel is it can be infinitely recycled without losing its properties. So we will no longer be reliant on other countries for the raw materials going into our furnace, we will also be drastically reducing our carbon footprint.

@@TataSteelUK I can see TATA pulling out of this project when its decommissioned, experience will be going as most take retirement. I hope I am wrong, but that's my gut feeling. My question is... what about the steelworks customers, and will Trostre close ? I can see an Ebbw Vale scenario coming our way............. The area will become baron of heavy engineering and Aberavon beach will be its main industry. I have seen this area decline over the last 60 years. Its a great shame as net zero kills the UK.
