Absolute disgrace all them people being made redundant. And now having to import from India or China
@TataSteelUK6 ай бұрын
Hi Paul, we’ve always imported raw materials such as iron ore from all over the world, and we will be importing steel substrates from Tata Steel in the Netherlands and India during the transition period. As soon as our electric arc furnace is up and running, we’ll be less reliant on other countries and recycling UK scrap.

@@TataSteelUK MMMM ! Think of this, if you can cope with steel made in India and Netherlands during transition........... why spend millions in the UK to build up a new plant , a plant that may not be able to compete with Chinese / Indian wage rates. I smell a rat. Its like knocking down a house to build a new one, but you already have a home elsewhere and don't need a new home. There is a lot of pride in Port talbot works, but that means nothing to a steel producer if its losing money.

@@TataSteelUK That's not true at all. The UK has vast reserves of all of the ingredients needed for steel production. Indeed, there are mothballed iron ore mines that are kept in regular observation until they are needed again.

Hi Paul, while the transition from blast furnace steelmaking to electric arc furnace technology does mean fewer people are required, this is also an opportunity to rebuild Port Talbot and the surround areas as a green hub. Many companies have registered interest in investing in the area and using our green steel once the transition is complete. This will lead to skilled jobs for the region.

@@TataSteelUK How many jobs directly and indirectly are being lost due to this change?
@TataSteelUK6 ай бұрын
It is estimated approximately 2,500 jobs will be affected in the short term, with the ambition of maximising voluntary redundancies. But once the transformation is complete there is the potential for thousands of skilled jobs to return to the area through initiatives such as the Celtic Freeport. Freeports have minimalnpositive effect. Freeporting is a statem where importers, our fireign trade rivals, can delay paying import tax until the point of sale. This aids the cashflow of foreign rival businesses. It is in no way the unilateral great benefit projected. Once again the political classes lie and manipulate.

Tragic for Port Talbot and the UK
@user-tn1vc1xz5d6 ай бұрын
I'm an ex chemical engineer. UK is a service economy (moving money) rather than industrial (making money). Our entire CO2 budget is less than some countries' annual increase. Our steelmaking is more efficient, safer, and cleaner. We'll never see industry like this again. Its why I'm an ex engineer, too hard to find work in the UK. I went into research and that dried up as we were seen as having the skills of the "bad old days"; funding moved to removing industry. I now work in an office. But i will never stop thinking like an engineer, a heavy burden when i see what is happening.

Will the decommissioning be timed so that the ferrous material from this can go into the new arc furnaces? Will it be destructively demolished and the rubble sifted for recycling, or will it be dismantled in situ for recycling? Can some of that brickwork or the refractory linings be saved? I found this interesting, would be pleased to see an update when there's some progress to share.

Hi Kevin. EAF technology can already make 90% of the grades of steel which blast furnaces can. It's also worth noting that steel companies in the US have led the way in developing ways to produce more complex grades of steels using EAFs so they can be used in some of the most demanding end uses, including in the automotive industry. Tata Steel has also invested millions in R&D in the UK to help us develop advanced materials for our customers.
